Hi Paul, Congratulations on another step forward in your training. I especially liked your display of Jion. It definitely brought back memories of my grading in 1993 which at that time was 6 hours in duration. (We got off easy!) Previously 1st. Dan Gradings had been 10 hours long but I think they took my age into consideration. I was 43 at the time. I miss those days of comraderie & the excess energy for life that I had. Cheers, Glen
Hey Paul, after a few weeks of travelling I fially got to a comp to watch these vids, congratulations man, its good to see the whole grading is up :)
Are you still practicing any other arts as well as shotokan these days? I have no idea how you find the time though with moderating, reviewing, personal training and working out though man you must not sleep or something :D
Thank you for the congratulations, bud, and I hope that you're having a good time traveling. And yes, I'm still practicing in other styles, but the majority of my time by far has been going into Shotokan Karate. I keep busy, but keep fun. :) Take it easy.
Good Job Paul on making 1st. degree black belt it was worth the training... I am looking for the day when I can once again get back with learning the martial art of Shotokan Karate but not able to afford it with having three training memberships at the gym I have to wait until one ends before I am able to afford it...
I've heard of Shotokan Karate, but never seen it first hand... Nice!
I'm a Black Belt in Korean Tang Soo Do, and looking at this, it seems like Karate is a lot more "solid" in terms of stances and techniques. What exactly is "Jiyu Ippon Kumite", anyway?
Anyway, nice job on getting that Black Belt! I can only tell you, that this is only the beginning of the REAL training XD
Jiyu Ippon Kumite is where the techniques are know by both parties but the speed/timing/distance are not. So it basically becomes a game of "I'm telling you what I'm doing and I'm going to get you before you block". Most organizations use it as a testing tool to see correct application of the technique while keeping both parties safe.
Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you like the video. Also, that's cool that you're a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.
As for Jiyu Ippon Kumite, it's generally a one attack/block/counter attack system to gauge proper aiming, timing, and distance between you and your opponent.
Your robes (I have no idea what they're called in Japanese) also look MUCH MUCH thinner and lighter than the Korean Do Bok... They must give you a lot more moving space O_O
The uniform that's used in Karate is called a Gi. And yes, you're right about the moving space; they do allow for a good amount of freedom. With the Gi that I'm using, it's actually a custom made one for me especially, to best fit my chest, waist, arm, and leg length, that I got from Japan.
