  • Hi Paul, Congratulations on another step forward in your training. I especially liked your display of Jion. It definitely brought back memories of my grading in 1993 which at that time was 6 hours in duration. (We got off easy!) Previously 1st. Dan Gradings had been 10 hours long but I think they took my age into consideration. I was 43 at the time. I miss those days of comraderie & the excess energy for life that I had. Cheers, Glen

  • What a beautifull Dojo !

  • i am laughing fucking bulshit

  • good job!!!! congrats :)

  • I have now seen the four videos and I have to say excellent grading over all.

    Congratulations on achieving your Shodan.

  • Good job bra i wish i could make it there too but im only a blue belt

  • Hey Paul, after a few weeks of travelling I fially got to a comp to watch these vids, congratulations man, its good to see the whole grading is up :)

Are you still practicing any other arts as well as shotokan these days? I have no idea how you find the time though with moderating, reviewing, personal training and working out though man you must not sleep or something :D

5 star vid, cheers mate :)

  • Thank you for the congratulations, bud, and I hope that you're having a good time traveling. And yes, I'm still practicing in other styles, but the majority of my time by far has been going into Shotokan Karate. I keep busy, but keep fun. :) Take it easy.

  • Good Job Paul on making 1st. degree black belt it was worth the training... I am looking for the day when I can once again get back with learning the martial art of Shotokan Karate but not able to afford it with having three training memberships at the gym I have to wait until one ends before I am able to afford it...

    Richard

  • Thanks for the comment; all of my training was indeed well worth it.

  • I've heard of Shotokan Karate, but never seen it first hand... Nice!

I'm a Black Belt in Korean Tang Soo Do, and looking at this, it seems like Karate is a lot more "solid" in terms of stances and techniques. What exactly is "Jiyu Ippon Kumite", anyway?

Anyway, nice job on getting that Black Belt! I can only tell you, that this is only the beginning of the REAL training XD

  • Jiyu Ippon Kumite is where the techniques are know by both parties but the speed/timing/distance are not. So it basically becomes a game of "I'm telling you what I'm doing and I'm going to get you before you block". Most organizations use it as a testing tool to see correct application of the technique while keeping both parties safe.

  • You sir nailed it. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you like the video. Also, that's cool that you're a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.

As for Jiyu Ippon Kumite, it's generally a one attack/block/counter attack system to gauge proper aiming, timing, and distance between you and your opponent.

Thank you again, bud, and have a good one!

  • Your robes (I have no idea what they're called in Japanese) also look MUCH MUCH thinner and lighter than the Korean Do Bok... They must give you a lot more moving space O_O

  • The uniform that's used in Karate is called a Gi. And yes, you're right about the moving space; they do allow for a good amount of freedom. With the Gi that I'm using, it's actually a custom made one for me especially, to best fit my chest, waist, arm, and leg length, that I got from Japan.

  • Wow, that's pretty sweet :D

  • Thanks a lot, dude. :)

  • @PaulGale yea i got a Heavy Gi those things will work your
