  • their turnout. :o

  • they only pick the girls with perfect bodies in russia so it's natural for these girls. In America they take everyone and teach them the same way as they do with the perfect bodied russian girls, but how are we supposed to learn the same way with a totally different body?

  • The Russians do not have the distractions that american students have. Teachers are much more strict and demanding and can say, do and demand things that one could get sued for saying here in the US.

  • That room seems much bigger in this video than I remember it being.

  • esto es increiblemente lindooo

  • They do have very nice lines and a lot of potential, but I can really notice some small mistakes...don't underestimate yourselves and don't accept them as the ultimate genius children.

  • every time i watch these videos it makes me wish my parents shipped me to russia when i was 7..

  • haha they all have perfect turnout

  • I Love Ballet<3

  • lookk how long there legs are:O

  • WOW !!! I go to a russian ballet school and the exam we are going to have will be like that and does any body know how old they are????? I am twelve and I'm about their level but they look younger

  • @LRBSballerinaz I think their 3rd class in Vaganova, so they might be around 11-13. Yeah they do look alot younger especially in the older videos.

  • Wow, they are amazing! My only problem is the forced turnout. Their knees aren't alligned, which kind of undermines the whole principle.

But wow, these students work hard, just, wow.

  • @osipovafan20 and @DancerWithTheBadKnee Thank you!! But i'm not only ten, where have you seen it? haha i'm fourteen. I'm trying really hard, and trying to keep my self-esteem high. I'm waiting for a video of me dancing to arrive, then i'll post it and see the comments. Take a look later! Bye

  • @lagdancer1129 yeah, it's vaganova method, Google it! ;)

  • Can anyone tell me when was this video taken? And where is this Vaganova Academy?

  • @towakeup the vaganova is in Russia.

  • @towakeup Russia St petersburg i think

  • they're getting fatter. Look at the older videos and then look at this one...they're not as "streamlined".

  • Um, overturnout much??

  • @balletlol wanted to say the same! if you look at the plies in first position, their knees!!

  • I've watched so many of these Vaganova videos and I have never heard a teacher talk once. They are seriously trained. It's amazing!

  • I like how they wear their flat shoes with ribbons, it looks a lot better than elastic and must last longer.

  • This is how I was taught, I studied with the Washington School of Ballet in Washington DC starting in the 60s and have never regretted the training I rec'd. There is a lot of emphasis to the arms and feet. Although I noticed in the video a few of the girls feet were rolled over in 3rd or 5th position. With a good qualified teacher, strong technique, and inner "stage presence" you can accomplish anything in dance.

  • sooooo over turned out!!!!

  • They all do have so great FEET!! Argh!

  • what year is this???

  • this is barre, not a performance. the individual style comes when you have a solid base of technique to express your style.

  • @MajorBunHead

I did not "hate on them". Rather, I questioned what I saw as a lack of passion and personal style, which is very obvious in this video. Also, you are quite wrong in my not seeing them as perfect; perfectly robotic is what I see.

Finally, the children I do see dancing everyday(studying Royal Ballet) are very lovely, thank you very much.

  • I do not see dancers with passion enjoying Dance, rather, I see a creepy bunch of robots. Where does individual style come into this, if at all?

And, yeah, natural turnout is important if you don't want knee problems later.

  • I'm studying the Vaganova tech now, had 6 years of classical ballet in the past. Vog IS different from other tech in that it focuses a lot on tech. We'll spend 1/2 hour on one move, perfecting it. there are 8 levels, each level you learn new moves. Voga uses more hands, arms, head than the classical tech. very deep plies in almost all moves. But I will tell you this much, my teacher, 50 ish - 60ish yrs old, is talking about having her knees replaced, so . . . be careful with this one!!

  • this is very clean. they r all moving at once and they have great techniqe. Great turnout. :D

  • good lord! they're so over turned out that they can't even close in fifth with bending their working knee. not good. but they're feet are beautiful.

  • wats the different between this and classical..I never knew there was other techniqes than classical..Any body have info on this?

  • the classical training you are talking about is probably a mix of vaganova, paris opera ballet, and ciccetti, which is what most schools use today.

  • ouch! over turn out!!! hope these dancers won't need knee replacement or hip replacements when they get older...

  • Russia is known for its excellent training. These girls have been picked from hundreds because they have the best natural turn-out and high arches. And of course they have to be skinny but that is because they train so hard and well that their food burns off! :) I wish I was as good as them!

  • ikr! none of these girls are anorexic... ive seen MUCH thinner. just watch the perm school. these girls are just built like athletes... lean and strong.

  • They are very good. Nice control and beautiful arms, great back flexibility. Also in sync ;-D

  • they are all turning out beyond their ability to control! They're slamming their feet every time they close in 5th. But their degage derriere is so beautiful!

  • Not at all

  • I dont know. :D maybe I'm mistaken then. sorry!

  • it's fine if you don't do ballet..:P

  • nope! i do, I dance a lot, but I'm kinda new to ballet formal training thing

  • they are russian and they have a high preasure could you all give them a break at least they don't have aneroxia.

  • Tthis was probably a (stupid) joke...

  • how old are these girls?

  • poor knees.

  • I keep watching those videos all over again not only for the dance but for the music..it makes me cry

  • Wow look at their turn out! Are they in pre-pointe or just very advanced?

  • how old are they? they are beautiful

  • Gosh, every time when I watch a vaganova class video, I realise how bad dancer I am compared to these girls. Wow.

  • @Kiarpb you should never think of yourself that way!

  • @Kiarpb

At least your a happy dancer that's not being starved and yelled at.

  • @Kiarpb Gosh, every time when I watch a vaganova class video, I realise how fat I am :') But indeed, really good!

  • In 1:50 look at the girl on the left how she rotates her leg to be even more turned out...

Unbelivible. I hope this doesn't do to much dammage to her.. \:

  • Какая кропотливая работа стоит за этими упражнениями!

  • I'm teaching the Vaganova method, and not because I have been trained by it, which is also true, but because that this is the best method. Many people saying that they are "picked out" girls, which must be true, but i don't think picking is all. the teachers must be very-very strict and the girls all desperately want to become dancers...

  • vaganova method? what is different about it?

  • Also, it should be noted that these girls are picked out of many girls for their physical ability to turn out like this. They are simply being asked to work to their full potential. It is not like in the US where you have so many different body types and physical limitations in the classes.

  • Some Vaganova Technical IEs:

    1) Turnout is not passive: it relies on how gravity is effective in enabling turnout to spiral through the feet, legs and into the hips, using all muscles and abilities to rotate.

    2) 5th position is fully crossed with back heel touching front toe.

    3) `A la seconde is aligned with supporting hip, regardless of the dancer's ability to rotate in the hip.

Western ignorance of this shows their poverty consciousness and antique misconception of the evolution of ballet.

  • this "evolution" looks very unhealthy to me because to keep the feet at 180 degrees some of them are twisting the knees very badly.

that's maybe just a stupid western worry, I know...

  • BTW: Vaganova does not use placement as a method of training as it is in the west: Vaganova is primarily concerned with position and the variety of ways the dancer moves between and through those positions. These positions are relative to space and proscenium, not some fear that the body can't take it. (Vaganova trains the dancer as artist - athlete, not some la-di-da dabbler.) If trained properly fr/ level 1 thru 8, the dancer will have a long career, injury free.

  • All you say is true, and I do not go against it, but it must be taken into account that the girls in this school have a head start: they are chosen FOR their bodies and natural facility.

Again: I AM NOT CRITICIZING, JUST STATING FACTS.

  • Lemme tell ya something: under the old soviet system, you'd be right. Even today we have almost bizarre bodies like Somova's coming out. Nothing is different in any other style. SAB, ABT Joffrey -all of them produce or hire students with an incredible amount of physical talent. This doesn't mean that others with less balletic bodies, but with the drive and motivation to dance can't dance it.

  • Continuing from below, in the US, anyone can aspire to dance. Because Vaganvoa was a Soviet system, we've had to take the curriculum and, not change, but adapt it. Therefore, the vast majority of students I have trained into professionals do not have bodies that would fit the mold of a Marinsky or Bolshoi.

But, some of them dance to the level of dancers who come from the Russian schools, despite physical limitations, including lesser turnout, and flexibility.

  • Further, -none- of these dancers has gotten injured by the application of the Vaganova method. Contrary to ignorant belief: the method does not teach forced turnout; rather it uses the source of gravity up into the hips, utilizing the whole leg. Yes, the dancer must engage with strength; like all methods it requires athleticism. That athleticism is the foundation for the art form. This is the reason fewer & fewer companies are hiring dancers trained in now antiquated methods.

  • I didn't say or even imply the Vaganova method is dangerous... I simply said the girls in the video, students fo the Vaganova academy, are chosen for their bodies.

And I praise you greatly for understanding that dancing comes from the heart, not from the body... we need more teachers with the knowledge and passion you have (I noticed both those attributes from your comments). And good job on your students. :)

  • i agree with you... i dont know wut the context of this argument is i jus saw wut u posted so plz prosemo or anyone else plzzz dont blow up at me... that is SO annoying on youtube ANYWAYS he is correct

  • ALL vaganova students are scrutinized HEAVILY... i mean they get applicants form all over the world and they take the VERY BEST BODIES... these girls dont need 2 force turnout...t hey already hav it naturally... same with perfect arches and a light, strong jump... they test for that... every inch of the body including height and weight are predicted based on parents data... they check to see how far the students can go as far as future flexibility...

  • oh cool! where do you train??

  • the russian ballet academy...

  • this is such bull. of course they have good bodies and of course they were hand chosen for their aptitude towards ballet but they doesn't change the fact that they are over turning out - you can see it in their plies: they're knees are not going over their toes and its that way because that's how are bodies are made. it've very rare for anyone to actually have perfect turnout

  • As you can see with their knees in the plié exercise, some do need to force their turnout.

  • bodies. waaaa that means ill never be a ballet dancer. im 10 en pointe but kinda over weighted and chubby although very flexible. T_T

  • You're only ten, darling. You have vast amounts of time to grow and become more streamlined... Don't worry about it. If you work hard and long and your really want to become a dancer, you'll be able to, and chances are, you'll slim down as you go. ;)

Just keep eating and drinking healthy, and try to keep your self-esteem high... otherwise, you'll hurt yourself and your dancing.

Good luck and keep dancing! :)

  • okay.! :)

  • Comment removed

  • I never meant to say that you are fat but if you think you are chubby you should lose weight !

  • something comes before body in ballet. Oh yeaaa Its called techniqe and FUN

  • people like you should learn to shut their mouths and to think before they speak.

  • Some of the comments regarding method show the lack of knowledge of westerners about the Vaganova system adn what is actually happening. This isn't your fault; the west hasn't a system that has moved forward both technically and artistically until perestroika allowed ex-soviets to come to the west. Fortunately now the decaying melting pot non-methods are being replaced. Re-adapted to the western cultures, Vaganova will join the French, Cuban Vaganova and Bournonville methods in replacing them.

  • I don't think that the vaganova academy is the best ballet school in Russia (I think it's Bolshoi), but the dancers are wonderful! Do you know how old thay are?

  • yeah i used to think that... but u really should watch some actual bolshoi classes and i tihnk u would change ur mind.

  • although they are of course amazing, they are going to have knee problems if they keep forcing theeir turnout like that! most of the girls' knees were NOT over their toes. (still, since it's the vaganova, they are ridiculously good)

  • ok first if you choose to be a dancer you should know that always you are going to be in pain, second you say that about the knees because im pretty sure you dont know about rotation.. when you do the correct rotaition yours knees also rotate, and if you dont force to the maximum you are never going to rotate... soo...

  • OMG!!!!! at 4:34, catch the 1st girl from the left's ankle! NOW THAT'S A FOOT!!

  • i know

  • Wow they are good! How old are they?

  • i think 12-13

  • ouch ouch ouch yeah they are great but LOOK at their knees...

i tore my ACL in ballet cos i was forcing my turnout and not actually rotating from my hip and this is, for me, painful to watch

  • I agree with you 100%, they are forcing their turnout, the feet are not in line with the knees..

  • so true. i didnt notice it at first, but...

  • you know it does look like some of them are forcing their turnout. But we have to keep in mind that all of the girls that are picked for the vaganova school are carefully selected with their bodies ability for ballet in mind.

  • I know, like I said I tore my ACL in my left knee from forcing my turnout cos my teacher was picking on me, I have not flat turnout but still a good range but it wasn't good enough. My comment was just saying it was pailful to watch as I have been there. They have AMAZING facility in their bodies and that is why they are at that school no doubt about that

  • yeah, and it makes them look awkward when they do demis in 5th...they all have really solid technique and great feet but that forcing has to hurt. :/

  • Read the comment from Prosemo.. They use their muscles, unlike many dancers from the west ;)

  • if they are in year 3, then they are 13. Year 1 starts when they are 10.

  • It's torture to watch them! They're perfect! I wish I could go to a ballet school like that, but unfortunately I've always been too tall or too big...:(

  • Is this an exam for the grade or something?

    many teachers watching them.

  • look how synchrone they are

  • I love ballet. These girls are amazing. So young!

  • It's been a dream of mine for a very long time to attend this school. A very unrealistic dream, mind you, but a dream I can't help hanging on to. Thanks for posting this film, I love it. Is there a second part?

  • Hallo danceril99, in which year this film was made? And which class these girls are?

3rd or 4th? And do you have more from it?

  • the students of vaganova are amazing !

  • I guess they all around the age of 10 to 12 and perhaps in Year 3?

  • look at that cabré back :O

  • What year are these girls? They're so young but so perfect already!
