I think he left out the part where you break off the bottom leaves and bury the stalk several inches up. This will force more root production giving the plant stronger roots.

You don't necessarily have to cut off the bottom leaves, the leaves when covered with dirt will grow roots to support the plant.

lol. my tomato plant is in a 1ft tall pot and it's 4ft tall and it still produces fruit.
