Yes the wave/s appear slow which is a illusion not reality. What gives Tsunami waves there enormous amount power is that the wave energy measures from the sea level to the ocean floor. Wind born waves ( normal surf even if big ) only reach a very shallow depth in the water. Tsunamis will travel at around 700 km/hr depending on the depth of the ocean where it was generated. Once the wave feels land it will slow down and rise in height. Once it hits land it wont stop until ocean levels itself out.

That's part of the reason why these things can be so deadly; you think it's over but there are more waves coming in, each is bigger than the last. 1:08-1:10 u will find the difference between common seawave with tsunami...the seawave is just a rising water particel by wind....while tsunami is a wave that brought water from the quake center...at 1:08-1:10 u see that the water falling from BEHIND the wave and not broke and the wave become small cause the force by the wind like happen in the common seawave........the tsunami will not BROKEN until it reach the shore.....!!
