This is by far the most understandable version on YouTube that I've found. When people sing it really loud and in a choral voice, it's very hard to understand. I did find a metal version of Die Lorelei, but the vocalist was Death Growling the entire time, so I couldn't understand him.
At the point where the river rhein got to float along the loreley-rock many riverboats where sinking in the past. Nowadays the firefighters are racing down in their firecars when a ship horn is blowing, but the heavy accidents with death viktims are history because of better boats.
es ist einfach grossartig, wenn man überhaupt solche Volkesmusik veröffentlichen und die andere mitteilen zu Hören zu verfügen machen. sein einfach dankbar!
gut gemacht (well done) in case off anlglo english, Im from south Oldenburg and i think it is very grate!!!!! Attention: The Melodi is not exaktly ?? Perhaps? I think so.
@9841108 The song is not "traditional" in the sense of being of unknown authorship. The composer & lyricist were Jewish, and Hitler wanted to remove all traces of Jewish contributions to German culture. But the song was so well-known and beloved that he couldn't actually 'strike it from the record', so he had sheet music, texts and recordings altered to say it was "traditional" instead of crediting Heine and Silcher as the source.
@StJouish The music of the old folk songs was rarely written down but almost always passed down orally. Hope this answers your question. Best regards.
Anybody know how I can download this to listen to it on my phone card? He does it perfectly for me in 3 stanzas, something very mnemonically important to me.
Well, it is very good. But he has to switch octaves because he starts lower than he can finish the stanza. So if you want to learn the song, you should listen to some other version - then come back and enjoy this one as a variation.
secon: Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet dort oben wunderbar. Ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar. Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme und singt ein Lied dabei. Das hat ne wundersame gewaltige Melodei.
haha i lov how some people post comments in german and i cant understand them even though i take german=] im looking this up to get the right pronounciations for the words becasue i have to memorize it for german class! ( its a very nice folk song by the way ) =)
This is The Cream of The Crop an can be put together with the most famous Russian Folk Songs like Stenka Razin, Troika nad Ochi Chornia. Unique in its own beauty.
I would like to learn of some other German Volk songs of that level.
I know those verses from childhood because my grandparents and father used to sing it in two languages: Czech and Serbian. Real beauty does not have etnic or national bariers.

Wunderschoen, wirklich wunderschoen gesungen! Vorher hatte ich eine opersaengerische interpretation gesehen. Die fand ich schrecklich, voll "ueberkandidelt". Ihre stimme kommt im herzen an -- ganz einfach so... keep singing!
Thanks for posting. I lived in Dinslaken near Dusseldorf for a year as a 6 year old. A also had many adventures with schoolmates. Here was my first exposure to opera, classical and folk music. Dad brought back many albums of German choral and folk music. This is the only title I could remember! Thanks.
Your folk songs bring back childhood memories. As a boy I lived in Benrath and my friends (German, American and English) would cycle to the the River Rhein as part of the adventures all children need but sadly do not get today. In all those adventures we never once were accosted by beautiful maidens singing but perhaps we heard the song and missed the significance, being only nine years old at that time.
This is The Cream of The Crop an can be put together with the most famous Russian Folk Songs like Stenka Razin, Troika and Two Guitars. Unique in its own beauty. None of them could be compared with anything lese, each one stands alone add UNIQUE!

The story is sad. So tell me what's the moral of the story??? Don't be distracted by beautiful women...it can kill you??? lol...Beautiful performance. ;)
Thanks for the (from my point of view funny) comment. Women who wrecked men (or tried to do so) are a frequent topic in old fairy tales, this one occurs first in Greek mythology. I think it doesn't make sense to look for a moral, it just happens this way under unfortunate circumstances.

Is that german folk music?? It has no typical sound, it sounds like a pop song :S
9841108 2 years ago
Counterquestion: How should "typical" German folk music sound like? Nobody knows how folks sang and played this song 150 years ago.
khtietgen 2 years ago 7
Idk, but it doesn't sound traditional to me, But I don't want to insult you, you are playing very nice!

Well the Text is by Heine and the score by Freiderich Silcher, so its hardly a folk song.

@9841108 It isnt true folk music, accordeon music is folk music just like in Holland. Check Rowwen heze, its Dutch.

"Typically" speaking, it should have a lot of trumpets, trombones and Lederhosen, but only because Germany "typically" is just like Bavaria.

@khtietgen The music is written down? Tradition persists?

1. Its Lieder--hardly a 'pop song' or anything like it.
2. Musicologists know exactly how it was played when it was composed--that's how we can have authentic performance practice recordings.
