  • thx shawn. your lessons are priceless. i don't know how many times i have to review this. just cant seem to re-produce your beautiful effortless swing. been watching almost all of your lessons since '08 and bought your dvds too. gone thru multiple times mr hogan's 5 lesson book, homer kelly's crazy G.O.L.F system and others. my biggest challenge is to keep my spine angle on the downswing. also having problem "throwing" the club to the target, casting early hence...fat shots.

  • Shawn, I am 2 years into golf. I started by watching your videos(ALL of them). I was having good progress. Nobody was saying what you say, so I read books by NIcklaus, Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Moe & more. I have gone all around & this braced tilt has become extremely helpful now in my swing. I feel so faithless & feel I should appologize to you! & give thanks. I will be your greatest student & give you credit when asked. Of course after god & my mom of course, then your teaching respectfully

  • @jacobreily Right on Jacob! Hey, Check out my latest just uploaded called "Feel the Braced Tilt; shawn clement" it will help you polish this big time! Enjoy the best drill in golf for me so far too in "Sledge Hammer Golf;Shawn Clement" Shawn

  • To tilt, all you do is move your head a little to the right(for a righty)and in response, your hips will move to the left? Also it feels like my hips and shoulders are not straight at the target, are they? Also, in the backswing, you have to toss the hands back(to create width?)with the turn of your hips(right?)and at the top you will still fell braced against the left side? From there, you let everything fall around the pressure point and to get more power, you push the club like a swing?Plz answer

  • @n00bslayer74 Just like I answered to jacobreily above, the perfect answers for this are in the latest videos I uploaded (Just for you BTW :)) "Feel the Braced Tilt" and "Sledge Hammer Golf" All the best! Shawn

  • Shawn - I have a tendency to PULL from the very top of the backswing and the club doesn't bottom out . So, I tend to clip the ball off the turf. Can you elaborate on helping the club momentum? You've said in other videos, it's a "push". Is it a push with the hands? A push with the arms? Also - what direction is the push applied? Towards the ball? Towards the target? Chris

  • @cmsima I can't teach like shawn, however, you call it pulling from the top, but I call it changing grip pressure in the backswing(casting). If you are right handed don't grip too hard with the right hand. Too much tension in the the hands and forearms will wreck your swing!! I hold on just a tad firmer with my left but I like to feel very, very light pressure in the right hand!!

  • @cmsima I just put up a series of videos on my forum in the thread called "exclusive new videos for wig'ers only" and 2 of the 4 videos are in response to this question as well as another thread called "shaolin sash whip" where you will see a wonderful analogy of a martial artist with his version of a rope dart where you will see how he times his moves by listening to the cycle of centrifugal force in his twirls...enjoy!

  • Question shawn, I notice you hit off the astro turf on a lot of your vids. To you is there a difference between the astro turf and the fairway. If so how do you adjust? Great vids to sir. My game is slowly climbing wooohooooo!

  • @BlackopsSINR If there was a contest for the average 30 handicap from mats vs grass, there would be a significant improvement with mats; HOWEVER, if you hit the ground before the ball, you will feel it with both and that is what is important. When I go from mats to grass, there is no change in performance, just a change in feel.

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn. just started watching your videos after being frustrated from many lessons.i play off 4but never seem to have consistency, have found your lessons extremely interesting especially super spiral 2 , such a brilliant explanation i feel like youv'e opened my eyes, it feels so simple its like a revelation. keep up the good work , kind regards

  • @no2pump Yes; you bet! You are getting ready to swing and release the juice to the target; see also, "Tilted Twirl; Shawn Clement" and "Rip the driver Shawn Clement" Shawn

  • love the videos, thanks

  • Excellent Shawn! This is great information. I really have been struggling lately because i have been on top of the ball instead of bracing against the left side, and slicing badly. This clears it up for me big time. Went to the range and hitting balls very nicely. If i said I was concentrating on pushing the hips to the left side and keeping the head behind the ball on all shots at address, would that be a good setup thought? Thanks again. Todd

  • This video is the key to the golf swing. Now I see where you tilt from. You tilt your lower spine into the left side. I was confused. I thought it was the head tilting away from the axis of motion. Now I get it. Now I'm making solid contact and hitting the ball first. Shawn you are a genius.

  • @MRdavesender Thank you for the great comment! Make sure you get your vote in for my video on the Golf Channel's instructor search; find the page, find my video and give it a nice thumbs up! (click on the thumbs up logo on the right hand side)

Thank you for the support; Shawn

  • @tsmith109 Better to build the machine first then get it ready to twirl to the target; see "golf pro lesson tilted twirl" Shawn

  • hi shawn,

great videos as always!! i am a great fan am really trying to buy into your methods after losing my way a little bit! id just like to say that after weeks and weeks of inconsistent ball striking i went out in the garden to try this braced tilt and i was hitting a lovely soft draw just like you said i would ;)

just a quick question about the braced tilt though - do you keep this setup position for pitches/bunker shots and even chips or not?

    thanks so much!!

  • @chinadonkey Not quite; the bunker and flop shots are fade shots through and through; so no getting pre-turned there; see "golf pro lesson how to feel the short swing" and "golf pro lesson working the ball" part 1 and 2; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

Ordered your new DVDs. Already possess the old ones. Had Posted some questions here and couple of more places. Waiting for you to respond.

    Thanks. mjs0039

  • Shawn, I just got back from the range. When I did the bracing correctly, my ball flight and distance was just incredible. I had at least 10 more yards on every iron and the penetrating ball fight with my driver and fairway woods was amazing. I did have some problems hitting some fat shots. Also, I sometimes have difficulty on the back swing with flexing my knee forward instead of moving it laterally and rolling to the inside of my left foot. Any thoughts?

  • @hooptime Use the feet together drill for this and make sure you feel both knees staying together over the feet; see "golf pro lesson feet together drill" as well as the update "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update" Shawn

  • Shawn, when you brace against the left side before you start the swing, do the hips and shoulders close to the target line slightly?

  • @hooptime Yes, especially for the draw; the fade, not so much; see "golf pro lesson working the ball" part 1 and 2; Shawn

  • Shawn, thank you for your videos. They are the most knowledgeable and best pieces in teaching the golf swing I have ever seen. I have a question about the bracing against the left side. When you do this, do the hips and shoulders close to the target line slightly? I would like to learn more about this move. In modern teaching there is big weight shift and turn to the right side. I find it very difficult to time up and blend the lateral shift back to the left along with the hip turn.

  • @hooptime Yes; of course; all this is though is that you are already in your backswing; it has nothing to do with direction. See "golf pro lesson alignment tweaking" and "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 3"

Thanks for the kind words! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

A question. What should be the position of the hands, left arm at address position. Will the hands be under the sternum or forward. Thanks.

  • @mjs0039 You want to make sure you feel the weight of the arm-club unit hanging below the shoulders at address; since the left hand is higher, the hand will hangs a bit more in a slight lower case "y" shape; Shawn

  • @clemshaw That would mean slightly forward of center, right?

  • @clemshaw That would mean slightly forward of center.

  • Shawn, my issue with the braced tilt is that my shoulders are pointing way right of parallel to the target line at address.

Do you find this is the case?.... And is this ok or am I doing something wrong.

    Thanks so much!

  • @pointspreadpros Yes; just like I answered to hooptime; and yes, it is more than ok as long as you got your proper alignment before hand;

    Shawn

  • Hitting up against the left side is a fool proof pivot and simple.

  • I concur with hackfest4. I had been watching Shawn's videos for quite some time with a fair amount of success, but not much consistency. Finally, I got it! The tilted spiral is (in my opinion) probably the best thing to utilize in the golf swing. It gives me very crisp contact, long distance and very straight. Thanks Shawn

  • One of the best aspects of Clemens swing technique is the fact that it is easy on the back. I get an amazing stretch on my back with no tension or pain.

With my old swing I would get back soreness.

Definitely Clemens knows his stuff very well.

It's jaw dropping to see the type of distance I get from such an effortless swing. It's a head scratcher.

  • Guys and Gals, this is the real deal. Buy into Shawn's approach to the golf swing and you will be producing amazing shots. I used to be an x-factor guy and it almost ruined my rotator cuffs. With Shawn's swing I hit the ball farther with more consistancy. "Tilted Spiral" is a powerful concept that will bring efficiency to your swing with predictable results.

  • hi shawn im hitting bad slice with my driver any tips to help darren ifrom ireland

  • Sure! Have a look at my "golf pro lesson great driver tip" as well as my "golf pro lesson modern driver" part 1 and 2;

    Shawn

  • Your weight shift to the braced left side begins as you pause to begin your downswing - and the braced tilt, with a full turn of the upper body. Feels like you are going to hit it to the right, but the ball goes straight... The results are fantastic. Thanks for your help!

  • Great realization!

Check out Tilted spiral #3 where we talk more about this!

    Shawn

  • Thank you Shawn, we will be waiting for your DVDS here in Mexico. We just ordered them last week(Mr. Humberto Garza and myself). I will soon would like to get my swing analized by you. Ill keep you posted. Great work. Thanks again,

    Alex.

  • OK Alex! Talk to you guys later!

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

At the moment we put ourselfs on our left side, arent we delofting the clubface?

Went to the range and helped a lot, but it seems my ballflight changed due to the delofted clubface at the moment I braced against my left side. One more question, are you exagerating your position on the video? because when I see your natural swing you can hardly notice the bracing on your left side. You have improved my golf hugely even though I am a 3 handicap.

    Regards,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex;

Have a look at my "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 1 and 2" videos and you will understand the 2 sides of what you see; I just enjoy playing both and use them at the appropriate times; Shawn

  • Shawn - A great idea for a video might be to use the driver as part of the Tilted Spiral

series. Also it might be helpful to watch some repeated swings from set up finish at various speeds w The Tilted Spiral.

    Thanks Boston George

  • Thanks George; good Idea; I am due to come out with some more videos soon; I will make a note of this one; Shawn

  • Shawn,

If im pulling shots while doing this , am I not bracing against left side ? Last week I was hitting a baby draw ,now im pulling everything.

    Thanks.

    Mac.

  • Hey Mac; this means you are either swaying in the backswing or that your ball position is too far forward; see "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and especially 3; sorry for not getting back to you sooner, these are busy times! :)

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn! I went out to the range today to practice the braced tilt. I was all over the place!!! My irons were mostly pullfades/slices and my driver was mostly push/hooks. I was hitting my irons very fat, sometimes 1-2 inches behind the ball. Then they would fly weakly to the right. I played around with my ball position to try to compensate and no matter where I put the ball, the same result. Any thoughts? WOW was that a frustration 1.5 hours!!!

  • Hey Man!

You are tilted away from the ball out of balance; see the "golf Pro Lesson don't keep the head down" part 1 and 2 to keep your chest forward over the ground; this will get you better balance and better striking; Shawn

  • I would call that toy a "Tilt-A-Whirl" if you wikipedia it, it sounds just like this tilted spiral!! :)

As the platform revolves, parts of the platform are raised and lowered, and the resulting centrifugal and gravitational forces on the cars cause them to spin

  • Thanks!

  • Shawn, I was a single digit handicapper, that lost my way and have been trying to "find" it again. Your method has brought me back and I can't thank you enough. One question concerning my ball striking. I am now feeling something I have never felt which is an incredibly solid feel when hitting the ball WITHOUT TAKING A DIVOT! I always took a divot before, so is this ok? I hit balls the other day and I had this nice circle in the sweet spot and my distance has been incredible. Just wanted to know

  • The tilt is now allowing you to swing Through the ball; like skipping a stone on water; you should feel a nice thump across the ground though so you might be over doing it a bit...

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • hey shawn, just ordered ur dvd g8 work, huge respect for posting these vids for free, i ordered the dvd as i felt i owed u for all this awesome free material & also have something 2 go back 2 wen im struggling with my game! i bought leadbetters dvd a while back & in my opinion he hasnt got a patch on ur coaching skills ive seen on here so far! i wud also go on 2 advise/recommend ne 1 luking at this 4 the first time shud certainly purchase shawns dvd has his techniques r 2nd 2 none!

  • Thanks Very much Mcginty!

Also for the education in abbreviated writing! It will come in handy with the crackberry!

    Shawn

  • Re chest position and pressure cooker lid analogy - truly brilliant analogy and description.

Don't know where you get all of this linguistic artistry from Shawn but from the optimisation of learning point of view it is unparalled in my experience . .

  • Thanks for such an eloquent and articulated comment!

    Shawn

  • Thank you for such an eloquent and articulated comment!

All the best to you! Shawn

  • In practicing this move, I am able to attack the ball to the inside more

  • When you mention head position, that isone of my problems. My head slides to target more on top of my left leg instead of behind it. Ugh!

  • Well, I have many videos to help there! "Golf Pro lesson..."

    -"...proper spine tilt angle"

    -"...Braced Tilt"

    -"...Braced Tilt Part 2"

    -"...tilted spiral part 1, 2 and 3

    -"...be a solid ball striker"

    -"...one leg swing no weightshift"

    Shawn

  • I've seen most of them :) You articulate instruction very well.

  • After looking at the tilted spiral video and reading Hogan's five lessons, I repent of the assertion that the tilted spiral swing is a reverse pivot. At the top of this swing, this swing is straight Hogan all day long. In five lessons Mr. Hogan states that the left leg should break to the right. This makes sense if one is braced to the left side because the weight is carried along the inside of the left leg

  • Very nice comment! Thanks!

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

I think this might be a silly question, but from the looks of it, your right foot is slightly open to the target line, and your left is perpendicular.. is this true, or is it that your target is over to your right, as opposed to parallel to the mat edge?

I really enjoy your vids.. especially your 2008 swing review ones.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hey Tim; Thanks for the question;

I advocate to have both feet slightly open about 15 degrees to ope the hip turn in the backswing to allow the body to get out of the way and same for the follow through; see my new "Nike Heavy Gloves video" and you should see what I have described...Shawn

  • Thanks Shawn - much appreciated!

  • Glad the tilted spiral thing works for you and good luck with your game, just make sure that push doesn't become a slice

  • there is no reverse pivot here, everything remains braced on the left side from the top and all the way through impact.

  • Yes, you are correct, there is no reverse pivot because his weight does translate back. However, because this swing is based on a controlled weight shift, the potential for a reverse pivot is there

  • Have you seen the "one-legged swing" video? Or the timing drill video where you start with feet together and step into the shot like a baseball swing? One of the main features in this swing is that any focus on weight shift is detrimental; you don't focus on it, it just happens.

Anyway I'm no expert so I'll let you discuss with Shawn, but his teachings got rid of the severe reverse pivot I started with, and I think anyone reverse pivoting with this swing is really missing something.

  • Hi Shawn

Very helpful video, thanks! I tend to slide my hips towards the target too much instead of rotating around the braced left side; are there any tips to remedy this?

Sometimes it helps if i slightly shift my weight at address to my heels of my feet as opposed to toes, what do you think? More weight on the heels feels more solid, though more weight on the toes feels more athletic and aggressive.

    Many thanks!

PS. I have a few videos up and am very open to feedback from all!

  • Think of the posture on the feet as having the arches of the feet imitate suction cups and you are applying solid suction to the ground; this way you get the best of both worlds; The drills you are looking for are the "One Leg Drill" and the "One Leg Part 2" for the sensation of rotation around the left side; Also, have a look at the "Hip Movement" topic in my "you tube Analogies" page of my website and you will see a great video called "Ball Bearings and Sockets"...Shawn

  • Hi Rich!

Absolutely! Go see the "One Leg Drill" and then "One Leg Part 2"; this drill will get you into the right position for sure; then as far as the right hip motion, go to my "you Tube Analogies" page on my website and see the first topic that talks about Hip Movement; there are 3 videos there to help including Bobby Jones and Belly Dancing...:) Yeah I love this job! Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • Hey gallzy;

Great question! How is your tennis backhand and how good are you at throwing a frizbee? because this is the feel that you will have on the backhand side which can be quite easy to do on one leg; Shawn

  • Shawn -- your stuff is gold, seriously. I can't tell you how much more effective your lessons are compared to some pros I've worked with in person. Your concepts are completely spot on, it is just a matter of the student translating them to his/her game. PLEASE keep it up, because obviously any doubters haven't actually taken the time to see how your methods really help!

  • Thanks for the great comment Mr. jherwitz!

    Shawn

  • So this 'bracing behind the ball' is really starting to come together for me... getting great contact and distance, and the key really seems to keep the head still and focused behind the ball. I seem to run into some issues with the driver, however, where I either pull or pull-fade my shots. I've looked at your driver videos, and I'm guessing maybe with the far-forward ball position, I might be 'lunging' through the shot. Any other thoughts on this concept with the ball far up in the stance?

  • remember that the driver is a much longer club and the cycle of momentum must last way longer; go to the "tempo and timing" video and reset the red line in the swing and then see what happens; then check "swing sequence" and make sure you give the body plenty of time to brace into the left with a solid squat well before the arms come down; "Downswing Weightshift" comes to mind there...Shawn

  • Thanks zico; much appreciated!

    Shawn

  • Your spine is tilted too far right at address. Your spine doesn't tilt enough to the left during the backswing. Because of this your head moves up and to the right. Your arms are swinging up and away from you too much as a result of this.

  • Hey Odipus; thanks for the comment; I have been briefed in the Stack and Tilt methods where I spent a whole day with Andy and Mike; this is the kind of thing they would say and this is what is frustrating to golfers; in my 130 videos, I explain in very easy terms the why and the how...and I love the way my swing feels; it allows me to bust 7 irons upwards of 200 yards if needed and drivers beyond 340; I will stick to what I do thank you very much! :)

  • I'm not a stack and tilt guy. I know they spent a lot of time with Mac o'Grady and thats where I learned about the swing. He derived all this by putting Sam Snead's swing video on a computer back in the 80's. In order to maintain your plane you have to keep your axis at the same angle throughout the swing and in order to do this this the head has to stay very still. Yours doesn't. Try it I think you will like it

  • Follow this advice Clemshaw and you will notice your angle of approach will be more angular producing more power and your angle of decent into the ball will be steeper enabling you to compress the ball into the ground better.

  • ODIPUS56, I'm sure there are different ways to swing a golf club, but there is nothing inherently wrong with Shawn's method. I've taken a lesson from him personally and witnessed his shots first hand, they are really something else.

I'm a beginner golfer and steadily improving using his explanations; gaining consistency in both power and control. My 6 irons regularly carry about 175yards, which I can bump up to 190 on a good day (modest numbers, but at 150lbs quite respectable I think!).

  • Hey Gallzzy; I just looked into your question and at 4 minutes into the video, you will get the explanation of the weight shift in question; you will also see in the "Swing Sequence", "Sequence Power Drills" and "Downswing Weightshift" videos that you can allow the left heel to lift in the backswing; but the deal is that you must re-plant the pressure back against the left side before the arms start down; OR, you go with the "One Leg Drill" and the Tilted Spiral series...Shawn

  • Shaun, could you please leave a 4 minute maximum video at 4 minutes, and not stretch them to 10 minutes? Some good info here, but so much chatter and irrelevant banter. (please)

  • Communication is a tough job sometimes; both from the giver and the taker; I hope you get the patience to get through the info here because I worked very hard on it; some of the barriers that prevent golfers from getting the information is all the accumulated baggage I need to chisel through such as "firing the right side" for example which would prevent them from maintaining their spine angle through the ball...I appreciate the input though, I will try...:)

    Thanks, Shawn

  • Shawn, whatever you do don't change. There's a reason you have 3338 subscribers at YouTube and it's not because you're doing any "irrelevant banter" (what is that, anyway?) Just keep on doing your thing and if the videos end up as 10 minutes clips, then so be it. 10 minutes well spent if you ask me. (or any of my 3337 pals)

    Regards,

    Tony

  • I was being constructive. Some of his video's are 3-4 minutes long and the same amount of relevant info is within those. He took my message the way it was intended, and replied in the same maneer. Pefect!

  • No he was being polite Doug. You would recognize that if you knew what it was.

I'd like to know is how you measure "same amount of relevant info"

If it's by how long you can keep up your concentration maybe the video is not to blame.

Basically what you're saying is that 60-70% of the information in this video is irrelevant and then you call it constructive.

Maybe you should stay on those 1:22 videos from Bobby Eldridge and leave the heavy stuff to those who can handle it.

    Tony

  • Shawn's favourite video is the first Tilted Spiral Video, which happens to be 3:41 long. As a professional, he can and does accept some constructive comments and feedback.

  • Thanks Tony!

I will! You guys are great! Shawn

  • Sounds to me like you are not clearing through the ball enough; if your backswing is too flat and to the inside, it will affect how you get through as well; I would go with the "Perpetual motion drill" and the "feet together drill" then check the "Arms Falling Down Plane" video too; you will find all of them on my website on the "You Tube Shawn" page...Thanks for the question; Shawn

  • I watched this video a couple of times at work yesterday and then went to my local driving range and it really seemed to help. I`d got out of the habit of tilting my head.

One recurring problem that I seem to have is that the first 20-30 balls I hit pretty solidly for my standard but then I start returning to my old habit of coming into the ball with a really open clubface. What would you recommend to get that feel back.

    Thanks Dave

    Thanks Dave

  • You need to get the flow back into the swing and stop thinking about things mechanically; have a look at the "Perpetual motion drill" and marry this to the "One Leg Drill" or the "Feet together drill" videos.

Thanks for the comment Dave! Shawn

  • ive been told that ive been doing a reverse pivot but you said its ok but my golf pga professional says i shouldn't be doing what your telling me to do?? what should i do??!

  • OK; first of all, a reverse pivot is an out of balance condition that has the weight pressure go to the toes of the left foot on the backswing and then gets shot back onto the right side on the follow through; DO YOU SEE ANYTHING LIKE THAT HERE??

He needs to get educated on the swing big time and to start, he needs to examine the human body very closely because it is those kinds of uneducated opinions that make us all look bad as PGA pros. BTW, they said the same about Hogan!!

  • Don't listen to that pro. I've heard the same things."Too much hip turn,no coil",non-sense. I'm no pro, but I think some pro's don't know what they are talking about either. Some just want to make you look like Tiger, and then they explain Tiger's swing incorrectly. In Tiger's book, the things he says are often remarkably similar to what Shawn says (the main difference, as far as I can tell, being that Tiger is so flexible he simply doesn't require as much hip turn to complete the back swing).

  • Thanks Wayde! I am so happy the right message is getting through! :) Well said and explained! Shawn

  • Great question! It is definitely closed to my target line; this is what makes it feel like it is going to the right; you will see what I mean in the "Braced Tilt" video and "Braced Tilt Part 2" video. Shawn

  • oh man oh man oh man. I have spent the last two weeks finding and trying to solve EXACTLY what much of this video is all about.

Good news is that it looks like my diagnosis was more or less correct. Further good news is that I never would have figured it out without Shawn's previous videos as a base. And further further good new is that makes me think I am on the right track. And a final plus -- new stuff to think about in this video.

I, and I am sure many others, owe you big time Shawn.

  • Hi Hank! That is a lot of good news!

    Thanks for posting! Shawn

  • Just curious Shawn but where do you feel like most of your weight is distributed on the bottom of your feet. More on the heel or balanced across the whole of the feet. Also, on the way into impact, do you feel pressure or any type of torque being generated on the left foot?

    Thanks amigo!

  • You definitely want to feel the whole foot in action; just like the arches of the feet are like suction cups; and when you use the right side to apply pressure against the left, you will feel a nice torque through impact and into the finish; it should feel strong and easy to clear around; Shawn
