The fact remains unchanged that shakespear read the bible and makes allusion upon allusion to biblical content, in order to reach the fullest possible understanding of shakespear (and many, MANY other artists) you must have an understanding of the bible. if you have an understanding of the concepts the bible borrows from you will not catch the allusions, ask any english professor and they will readily admit this, religious or not.
you will miss multiple allusions in pretty much every western work up until about the turn of the century, and even still after that most works will still have biblical allusions, it's just where the decline starts, by about the 20s or 30s you would have a reasonably large body of literature that does not contain biblical allusions. You don't need to read the whole bible for this purpose, perhaps a 200-300 page synopsis would be enough.
you dont need to read the bible to get the jest a normal western education will cover most of it. remember the bible is only 2,000 years old most of us Europe's can trace our cultural history back 6,000 years or more. The bible is a very small part of our heritage. I can understand it being of more significants to the US and Canada as they are far younger nations who were Christians from they founding. Here in the UK Christianity has only been here for 1,400 to 1,900 years

The fact remains unchanged that shakespear read the bible and makes allusion upon allusion to biblical content, in order to reach the fullest possible understanding of shakespear (and many, MANY other artists) you must have an understanding of the bible. if you have an understanding of the concepts the bible borrows from you will not catch the allusions, ask any english professor and they will readily admit this, religious or not.

you will miss multiple allusions in pretty much every western work up until about the turn of the century, and even still after that most works will still have biblical allusions, it's just where the decline starts, by about the 20s or 30s you would have a reasonably large body of literature that does not contain biblical allusions. You don't need to read the whole bible for this purpose, perhaps a 200-300 page synopsis would be enough.

It doesn't matter that your culture is more than 6000 years old the vast bulk of literature dates post-bible. And my original post said "basic knowledge". I wouldn't call basic knowledge reading the bible cover to cover I would say that perhaps 3-4 hours of class time a year for elementary and high school students.
