They were session musicians in the 70s and worked in several genres. You might be surprised by their chosen style for their eponymous band if you check them out on youtube!

Actually when we are talking about drum breaks, about funk drum breaks, then they can be found from all over the world. It wasnt just a rhythm that was isolated in the US. Just look at Hungarian labels like Pepita, the drums on those records really funky.
