I think we forget that the summit is not always the goal. We are typically people of short sight in regards to our lives. Thus the path immediately ahead of us is generally the most interesting and about all that we can focus on at once.
Having climbed all of Colorado's 14K mountains I also know that tree line is much prettier and has more facets than the summit.
Some people like the trees better than the view. I like both views in your analogy.
My quest is not to get to the top, it is just to keep my footing while I walk. I have no specific destination really. I just want to get to wherever I am going in one piece!
