Beautiful song, Black Gives Way to Blue is one of them ablums that just cements an artists quality just as everyone began to doubt and forget. Like Ozzy coming back with 'Blizzad of Ozz', Judas Pritest with 'Painkiller'.

@TheChills90 Well, this isn't one of those songs that someone would play to someone who is wanting to get the full effect of AlC's music. I think what's so appealing about them is they have stayed constant and consistent in their sound considering they're one of the very very few bands to survive the fall of the grunge era and keep the same sound and still remain popular, successful, and relative. Check out "No excuses". That's one of my favorite songs as far as music goes.
@TheChills90 Check out some of their live performances, especially from the 90s. Nutshell unplugged is a good starting point. Junkhead live from the Singles release party is another killer performance. If their talent still is not clear after a few of those live clips, then A1C is probably just not your style.

Anyone who thinks Jerry was the main song writer is effing clueless. Layne was a tormented soul mostly from addiction. Just listen to the lyrics. Jerry HAD to do most of the singing when Layne's addiction to heroin became too much to cover for him. Don't misinterpret singing for lyrics and song writing. I think the story of the video/song is about the 7 deadly sins (Pride,Envy,Gluttony,Lust,Anger,Sloth and Greed) if you look towards the end when the woman is walking down the corridor they are different things happening in each room..And all they can do is watch... eg Jerry is sat at a table full food.... greed and Gluttony. I think each thing happening each part of the song means on of those sins. Jerry is speaking to everyone. maybe in some essense hes speaking of experience of Layne.
I dont think its anyway speaking nasty or any anger towards Layne because if he felt like that he wouldnt of decicated the album to Layne, or write a beautiful song "Black Gives Way To Blue" for Layne.. I think the lyric speaks to all of us, and Jerry coming to tumers to his own feelings of things..

You're wrong Kaszpiboy, They're using a metaphor to show the relation between Layne's drug use and decisions and the young womans in the video. While it looks like she's entering a fun life of decadence, looks are misleading. Instead of fighting to stay true to herself she chose the seeming fun option. Everyone else is doing it. In the end she became a slave just like Layne did to his addiction. So much talent and purity destroyed. Be aware I'm not judging just stating my opinons.

AC/DC, Faith No More, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, were just a few bands that had to replace a lead singer, but went on to greatness. William is good live, and my only complaint is in songs like Rooster he sings with too much "soul", whereas Layne sang with more "fuck you" in his voice. If William tones down the "soul" and adds more of the classic AIC "fuck you" in his voice; he'll ace it live!

This song really strikes a chord with me. I see it more about the decisions people make, not just with drugs or other bad habits. It's like when one of your friends betrays you and refuses to see the consequences of his/her actions, the friendship they traded for a temporary gain. The damage that is done is tremendous, but it was their decision to follow the path of destruction, not yours. With that, you can move on knowing that their actions will catch up with them in the end.

The video is very clever once you look past the hot girls in lingerie. Notice that the menu items are descriptions of people. The guys and the woman represent death or addiction that destroys people. As other people have said, the women represent seduction that brings people into bad habits or things. Plus there was a biblical reference on the card. Cool video that makes you think, unlike 99% of videos these days.

I think the story of the video/song is about the 7 deadly sins (Pride,Envy,Gluttony,Lust,Anger,Sloth and Greed) if you look towards the end when the woman is walking down the corridor they are different things happening in each room..And all they can do is watch... eg Jerry is sat at a table full food.... greed and Gluttony. I think each thing happening each part of the song means on of those sins. Jerry is speaking to everyone. maybe in some essense hes speaking of experience of Layne.

You're wrong Kaszpiboy, They're using a metaphor to show the relation between Layne's drug use and decisions and the young womans in the video. While it looks like she's entering a fun life of decadence, looks are misleading. Instead of fighting to stay true to herself she chose the seeming fun option. Everyone else is doing it. In the end she became a slave just like Layne did to his addiction. So much talent and purity destroyed. Be aware I'm not judging just stating my opinons.

AC/DC, Faith No More, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, were just a few bands that had to replace a lead singer, but went on to greatness. William is good live, and my only complaint is in songs like Rooster he sings with too much "soul", whereas Layne sang with more "fuck you" in his voice. If William tones down the "soul" and adds more of the classic AIC "fuck you" in his voice; he'll ace it live!

This song really strikes a chord with me. I see it more about the decisions people make, not just with drugs or other bad habits. It's like when one of your friends betrays you and refuses to see the consequences of his/her actions, the friendship they traded for a temporary gain. The damage that is done is tremendous, but it was their decision to follow the path of destruction, not yours. With that, you can move on knowing that their actions will catch up with them in the end.

The video is very clever once you look past the hot girls in lingerie. Notice that the menu items are descriptions of people. The guys and the woman represent death or addiction that destroys people. As other people have said, the women represent seduction that brings people into bad habits or things. Plus there was a biblical reference on the card. Cool video that makes you think, unlike 99% of videos these days.
