photoshop is great for enhancing paintings and drawings and unlike traditional paintings materials arent costly. one will not run out of paint. no drying times. great lighting effects. and one of the greatest parts is the ease in distribution of paintings/drawings to the public no scanning and further retouching, no photographing for print distribution.

Sorry the brush angle feature is only available on the Intuos or the cintiq.

@ShakeNBake208 - Bamboo doesn't have that kind of sensitivity. You need to buy a professional grade tablet for that. I have a Bamboo too, and happy with it (for the price) ;)

@cpkeysar you need to be using a stylus in order to see the brush preview

@SusanChan yep, like a pen/graphics tablet. the brush preview is supposed to mimic brush pressure, angle, and rotation - based on pen movement. this can't be done with a mouse so that's why the preview button is grayed out.

ok then the only other reason would be because of your graphics card; you need one that supports openGL, which photoshop uses to complete certain operations, i.e. canvas rotation. other than that, it could be your RAM, or lack there of.

also check to see your openGL is enabled.. look in the preferences menu then under the performance tab. make sure enable openGL drawing is checked off

@PikminSheina hi. preferences is the last option under the Edit menu on a pc. for a mac its under the Photoshop menu (well for cs4 it is... i havent used cs5 on a mac yet but it should still be the same). you'll find the performance tab there.

Spoke too soon....twice! On my work system, which is a newer Mac Pro, I didn't experience the same delay with the Photoshop brushes as my home system. Seems it's time for an upgrade. The deeper I dug into the brush options, the more variety I achieved. So we'll see...

Well, I spoke too soon :) I downloaded the trial. As a heavy Corel Painter user, the new Photoshop brushes are great, but not near as responsive. Painter is capable of a much greater variety of marks (expressibility as the video says). I am impressed with CS5, but it's not up to par with painterly brushes. The only thing about Painter that bothers me is the interface, not the tools. It's clunky, slow, and crowded. Still, as far as brush marks go, Painter remains king! :)

It's going to be pretty tough to convince me to get the next version of Painter. Not that I don't like it, but I've always preferred Photoshop's interface. The user experience is just more seamless. With these new tools, it will take a major upgrade from Corel to spark my interest.
