Great footage! This is Woody's best band and him at his peak of skills and musical thought... so sad all the bad stuff that happened to this guy... there are a few trumpeters that have tried to emulate his sound, I think Tim Hagen for one...
man ive been playing trumpet for some time and i dont really hear people talk about how good this guy was and after hearing this i dont understand why
Shaws approach to improvisation here is unlike anything ive ever heard on the trumpet, ive just started to listen to this guy within the past week, he is amazing! He uses an approach similar to freddie hubbard but his is his own without a doubt.
Not only are they playing this tune very fast, it is a tricky one to learn, as a bassist learning it, I can tell you firsthand that these guys are amazing musicians! Woody died tragically, as many musicians do, Damn shame. The world needs more like him.
Thanks for putting this up. Woody is incredibly important in the lineage of great trumpeters, improvisers, and composers. He still is not widely recognized for his greatness as he should be. These videos and his re-releases should help. I saw Woody, but not with the underappreciated Carter Jefferson - it was the "United" tour and they were on a double bill with Art Blakey @the Keystone Korner (featuring a new guy, 19-year old Wynton Marsalis). Great evening. Thanks again.
Check out Escape Velocity by the same group. It's on youtube.

Why doesn't anyone play this kind of "Balls to the Walls" Jazz anymore?
the whole scene has gone soft and ineffectual.
