i dont think helping the avocado plant grow too early is such a good idea. it will grow pre-mature and for that reason it will need support from a bigger tree to make avocados! so it's not a good thing to do, and of course the weather counts.

The avo pits sprout in my compost pile, I have them all over the garden but they die in the winter. I put a couple in soil in the house and they sprouted like that too.

I also sprouted some in water. Just fill water about half way up the pit.

when we were kids in so cal,.  we started the seed the same way our tree grew to approx 25 feet gave us 300 avos once... oh yah it works

ok, and I know you've only been in Ecuador for a few days now, but since you ARE planning to spend some fair amount of your next years there, may I make a suggestion? There is NOTHING in Quito in the way of any kind of health food store that is beyond maybe what we wound have found here in the US in the 80's. If you are looking for business opportunities, this one is ripe for you guys. And I believe the interest and sophistication is there, people just need to be educated.

Ask for incan berries by their name Uvillas and pronounce the double ll with a soft J. Ooh-vee-jhuz.

In Quito the double L is always a soft J sound (not a Y like in mexican spanish)

just twist the top off the pineapple before doing any cutting. it will grow much better. david wolfe demonstrated this at erewhon once and i took the top home in my backback. its my favorite pineapple plant!
