It makes you wonder if deep down ,Grant and Lee both thought this war was in vain.Grant even allowed lees men to take home their guns after they surrendered.Without ammo of course so that they could hunt for the winter. LEE and GRANT both had great respect for each other. If we only knew everything they talked about?
I think it's funny when you see "The South will rise again", because in my opinion they never FELL. The South stood up for themselves and what they believed in, and let's face it, being out-manned and out-gunned, pretty much kicked the North's ass in (most) of the significant battles. With equal money, weaponry, and troops, I don't think theres any question that the South would have won their independance. (By the way, I'm a Northerner, lived pretty much my whole life in Connecticut)
I agree that the South was and always has been upright(except Andersonville and the atrocities on both sides), the North always industrialized and postured with the on-going government. I too, a northerner, but as a result of the fallout believe the outcome was wrong . Who would have thought, the worst of three outcomes?!
The South was not responsible for what happened at Andersonville. You feed your people and your army. If you can't get enough food through the enemy blockade to feed the prisoners, then that's just the way it is.
Until 1965 the spirit of these men was carried in the hearts of the South, but after that date the media regime warred on the common folk of the South, drugs, war, and projected guilt and hatred
"Good God, not PORCHES!" *gasp* ...What a terrible thought...
(Rolls eyes). This coming from a guy who incorrectly spells "inbred", thinks in stereotypes, and assumes that a southern victory would have meant everyone would have adopted (his rather skewed idea of) southern culture.
The south didn't want to conquer the north. They simply wanted to be left the hell alone.
Further, despite the union victory, southern culture (stereotype or otherwise) remains. may it ever be thus.
u would know how to spell imbred... well we got a southerner here. u guys shudnt have left the union so we had to go to u and kick ur ass.lolool. at least we were not pro slavery. but i bet ur different than how they were back then, though... eh wuteever
I'm 13 and we have debates in History once a week. Someone always brings up slavery and how bad the South is, even though we're in the South. But I know it was heritage, not hate, and I love my South and I love every Confederate soldier there was. My great great great uncle was a sargent general and survived Gettysburg and I will preach the true meaning for as long as I live!

Clarification: Possible veterans & one fraud shown in the photo at :34 are, left to right, William Townsend, John Salling (definite fraud), and William J. Bush. The photo shown is actually from 1951, not the late '50's as I had thought. More info: see wikipedia (various). Pleasant Crump of Lincoln, AL was the last verified CSA vet.
The picture of the 3 men shown at about :34 seconds is a picture of three fraudulant Confederate veterans - in it for the money and attention. The last confederate died in 1951, this picture was taken later in the 1950's. Other than that a fine tribute to the men in gray, and an excellent choice of song as well. Thank God they lost, and the Union was preserved.
Yes, thank God that we now have a Marxist in the office....that's what the good ole' Union has given us.....and free health care too! Oh boy, we sure are lucky. Don't even have to pay for it.....keep your dirty nasty eagle--and up with the Cross
Should be remembered that many of the importang Confederate generals like Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee opposed slavery to a greater or lesser extent. After the war when a black man went to the front of a white church in Virginia to receive communion and all the people were staring in shock and confusion, Lee walked up and kneeled next to the black man. Slavery might've ended later if the CSA won, but would've ended. The real danger of the CSA was balkanization of America.
thats nothin new with my family, my father and i are civil war reenactors and when we try and get info on our family that fought for the north in the civilwar she snaps back and says " what you want to be knowin bout them fer?!" we dont know who they are or where they are if we have any family at all up north or were ever they went
This Video is kool . My Gf has relatives whom were in the Civil War and were from Alabama. as for my family there were none because they didn't immagrate here till the 1920's.
Folks, South or North we are all part of the country: The United States of America. The people from the South should not let older folks plant seeds of hatred, bigotry, and bitterness. I'm not saying it's not still a problem in the South... What I was saying was that the South was forced to deal with the issue during the 20th century, and earlier. In the North there has always been a self-righteous, superiority complex about the South. There is just as much racism there, but it's always been below the surface.

Just beautiful, and great photos ! It must have been a massive blow to the Southern society and psychology after the war - especially with Reconstruction. *YEAH RIGHT *.That's when another vicous side of the war took over from.
As I am told my Great Grand Father W.B.Chowning Sgt. company B of the 8 Tennessee Infantry said it was not a civil war it was The Great War of Northern Aggression
I honestly think the union should be preserved, then, now, and forever. However, I feel deep respect for the confederate soldiers how fought, because they fought for what they believed in.
I feel such indescribable pride when I see these old images of Confederates who gave their all in a lopsided-from-the-beginning war and always held their heads high, with every right. So sad how a vocal few wish to tarnish them and the states for which they served. We must not allow history to continue to be wrongly rewritten. These men deserve a trillion times better.
I'm a yankee, but want to say the southern states had every right to leave the union. The U.S. has become an empire. May God have mercy on us. The empire has much blood on its hands. Also this is a very moving video.
Johnny Horton, as I understand it, was a high school principal and a history teacher ... what a guy! This music is just great. RIP Johnny -- you done good.
