Hey there, I had the grinding error and a disc tray problem so took drive apart, fixed drive belt, wiped lens(as I didnt know it was the worm) then drive worked for 2 days then died so I bought a lens replacement(that just slots on the bars)

Do you know any guides that show you how to put it on?

GUYS all i did was apply lithium grease to the worm motor that was already in the drive, so there was no need for me to buy another part... Thanks though lits a great drive lube xD

for my opinion you should buy a 360 because the ps3 sounds way more noisy than the 360, i have a ps3 and it sounds like an airplaine, the xbox has better graphics and gpu, i just buy my ps3 on ebay i'm going to by a 360 next weak cheers guys !!!!!!!!!!

I've got the same drive on a 2007 xbox 360 taken it apart a few times but never thought of changing the worm gear and motor, I have lubricated it with silicone grease, but it makes a bad sound when trying to read the more scrached game discs, it's ok with music CD, and DVD movies. But with some game discs it just says its a DVD or open tray. It will read the non scrached discs, but some times it acts up on those. Thanks

YEAH!!!!@ I FUCKING FIXED THAT SHIT!!!!! WITHOUT HAVIN to go and buy a new motor or dvd reader. I basically took it all apart and the lil motor that moves the laser i took out and sprayed it down with wd40 and cleaned it off. AND BAM! it reads my games and doesnt make the skipping nosie anymore! thanks soo fucking much for isolating the problem

I recommend just replacing the whole drive. so you start off with all new parts, to do this you have to just remove the back circuit from the old drive (Big green board) and put it to your new one. just make sure its the same model.

Easiest way to replace your drive is just to pickup de key of old one and put in new one.

man, its the 1st time ive seen an inside to a 360, looking at this video, you can see they could have made the console a lot smaller.

guess its the marketing technique; don't make it too good so that they can make a slim line version in a few years

Well I believe that I have this problem, and have already tried lubeing the motor spindle, and checking the magnet to see if its not glued to the motor. Both are fine. Then I look at my worm motor and can't really tell if its warped/messed up like yours and if it needs replacing? Anyway you could give me some tips to point that out?

my worm motor when i turn on my xbox keeps pushing the laser in one direction for 10 seconds then laser lights red and stops same thing when i try to eject the dvd drive it does the same thing and the drive wont open

The majority of the time i get a grinding noise is when I immediately turn off the console or exit the game to go to the dash. Its sounds like its having prbs slowing down or stopping the disk.

Would that still be the worm motor?

teh worm motor controls the laser, the spindle controls the spinning of the disc, try replacing the spindle.

yeah because i rarely hear grinding during the startup or during gameplay. so its most likely the spindle. i gatta look that up. i dont know exactly what that part looks like, but i have the whole drive dismantled. Should I even worry about it? Only makes a 2 second grind when I stop playing.

well if its not serious I dnot recommend opening it, only if its giving gameplay issues, parts like those have a good lifespan so you shouldnt have real issues with it

as long as you match the motor with the one you want to replace you can. Just put Lithium Grease on it, Its a white thick grease that comes in a tube or jar. should cost about 4-5 bucks at a local hardware store

umm my xbox has the e74 error and i took mine apart now too see the prob ill tell you what happens when i turn it on the laser vibrates or shakes back and forth and then the dvd drive starts to spin for 3 secs then stops and then the laser goes up and turns red and turns normal

i'll tell you what it does, when i turn it on it starts spinning my xbox is naked right now, i turn it on it starts spinning when the xbox screen comes up the laser just shuts off and restarts spinning again and the laser just shuts off.

then its the laser, try cleaning the laser get a q-tip and put some rubbing alcohol on the q-tip then with the wet side wipe off the laser eye (the little glass eye) NOT TO HARD! just wipe it then clean it with the dry side of the q-tip, let it try for 2 minutes then try again, if that doesnt work, replace the laser.
