Great..really loved it !!!...maybe not quite the most accurate fingering but played with energy feel & enthusiasm.....unlike Stephanie Keys version which no doubt is more technically accurate but sounds dull & soulless, rather like a player piano in fact!....Keep rolling those tenths...I have to do that too...same prob...need longer fingers! :-)
Ostracize the nay-sayers and enjoy the music. I think you did a great job, sir. There's always room for improvement, but it looks like you had fun. Well done.
interesting interpretation. But I dont think it holds a candle to the original.Left hand was kind of mushy in the beginning. Couldn't make out the notes in some places. And I see you didn't play a single tenth......They're tough, I know. But overall this was good.
@ZingZee123456789 no one can come close to playing this the way the composer did, and yep my left hand is weak (had been playing stride for only about a year or two when I recorded this).
But I'm *definitely* playing 10ths throughout this, you can see them in the video and hear them as well, not sure how you missed them.
Ok..but you were definitely rolling ur tenths, (I could see and hear them being rolled) so I don't think that counts. But ,to ur credit, your left hand was very clean when the melody went up an octave and when u were playing the collapsing thirds. You should check out my recording of Fat's "California Here I Come". Im working on the "Handful" now and will probly have it posted in a couple months.
@ZingZee123456789 Ok yes I didn't realize you meant that, yeah I do roll some of the 10ths (not all of them!). Part of the reason was I was still new to this type of music, and part is because my hands simply aren't big enough for some of the 10ths, like the Eb to G in this song.
So yeah, thanks for your comments and send me a link of your video when you post it.
if you had busted this out with some ppl back in the day, they would've started dancing. Nowadays if you hammered this out, ppl would be too amazed to take their eyes off you lol
@0KurzKurz0 alright try and do that there are going to be mistakes listen to how crazy that is and i didnt hear any maybe you just need to clean out your ears!
I still love watching this. Seeing someone so young and so talented shred that old upright with a song by Fats Waller is the sort of thing that gives me hope that music is still alive and well.
I'm learning to play this piece from the same transcription, but for the life of me I can't get beyond a certain point. I've hard this problem with other stride piano pieces:
My stumbling block is the striding left hand. I just never seem to get beyond a certain point of accuracy or stamina (very little). Do you have any tips for learning to play the left hand part and building up strength?
Ahhh there's nothing like watching a video of good pianist playing a fast piece and feeling as though it's skipping slightly, I must find the sheet music for this. Love the open piano as well, I'd remove the front from my upright if the back wasn't already missing, it's keen on the forte but not so much on the piano part, unhappy neighbours as it is...
Fantastic playing! You rock. I am completely hooked on this video. Call me a Fats junkie - I must learn to play this, someday, if at all possible...!
I believe that Fats himself would have been quite impressed by this powerful & energetic interpretation of Handful Of Keys. How could he NOT be? Bravo!!! I loved it.
sorry oh , admirer and all as i am (viz the more difficult tatum version of 'tea for two') have listened to this again after spitznagel 's and stephanie trick's versions and have to say , sadly , that this is too rushed , the tempo strays , and some notes go awry .
fats wou,ld have preferred a crisper delivery too i'd hazzard !
@fingerscarr perhaps, but I know I can't hold a candle to this performance either, so I'm loath to point out aspects of it that the performer is most certainly aware of himself. I find it quite effervescent in comparison to Stephanie Trick's nd Martin Spitznagel's performances which - while technically flawless for all practical purposes and notable for their own personal improvisational turns on Waller's material - sound timid to my plebian ears in comparison to this boisterous celebration.

@micheljch That the vast majority of people who comment on Youtube videos are drooling morons who can barely string a sentence together without mentioning Justin Bieber (on videos that don't even have anything to do with him, no less). I'm just glad that there's still some level of intellectualism clinging on.

Now THAT'S my NYear's resolution for 2011...to work on that song alone to as much as perfection that I can get it! You really have absorbed stride playing, and the Fats spirit!
AWESOME!!! I am a huge Fats Waller fan and I have been for many, many years. He was a legend in his own time. You've done him great honor with this absolutely flawless and very powerful interpretation of one of his signature songs. Congratulations. Not only are you extremely talented, but you are keeping alive a very vibrant and important tradition that is at the very heart of American music. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Well played! You've motivated me to get out my copy of Posnak's transcriptions and have a go. Yours was quite a performance - and these pieces are NOT easy.
I just heard Judy Carmichael, Dick Hyman, and Marcus Roberts live, playing a wild three-piano version of Handful of Keys (cellphone video uploaded on You Tube at URL v=NGgmQA8Virk) ... then I came home and listened to this performance (for the 100th time, probably), and I still love it !!!!! foundring is AWESOME !!
The best part is that you didn't just play straight from music. It's pretty clear that you listened to Fats Waller and got his touch and sensibility in there.
@schumakov It's in The Great Solos, 1929-1937 by Thomas Fats Waller, published by Hal Leonard (in the "Artist Transcriptions" series). Paul Posnak does the transcriptions and he really did a fantastic job.
thanks for the compliments and I'm glad you enjoyed it =D
hi i just listened to your transcription of Ain't misbehavin', its really great, but i was wondering if by chance you had the solo you play notated, i would love to learn it
I haven't listened to this in a year. When i first heard it, I was dumbfounded. Kylan just gets it ... he has the sound. I've read every comment on here and all the criticaisms can be thrown right out the window. I'd love for Kylan to meet and study with Dick Hyman. The kid has genius ... and here I am a year later, and I still love this amateur video as much as anything ... love you Kylan ...
You need to go into bars that have a piano, pretend that your not that great, and that you play a mean 'Heart and Soul' and then whip out this nasty tune.
I just learned about Fats Waller in a music class. We listened to this song and I loved it. I am so jealous of your skills right now. How long did it take you to be able to play as well as you do?
Wow, I always come back to this video, it is a source of inspiration ... this is incredible ... what can I say ... thanks for keeping the flame alive ...
I'm such a huge fan of this music esp. Fats Waller. Thanks for posting that. I'm trying to learn music by Robin Frost, a contemporary composer (you may know Space Shuffle, there are vids of it on here). I'm attempting a piece called "in orbit"
I don't know anyone who can play it but there's a CD that has that tune on it. All the songs on it are MIDI performances, so whats being played is flawless, cause of all the editing. The CD is Hot Kumquats and Other Frosty Treats.
Without question the single greatest live performance I've seen on YouTube. You would have to rewind all the way back to George Gershwin to find anywhere near the talent...at his age...
yikes, what a compliment! Though I could easily show you tons of better live youtube performances. Thanks though!
Though I didn't get into jazz and stride until I was about 20, I started playing Gershwin as far back as 8 or 9, and I love the guy just as much today.
This video is a masterpiece! It is a supreme credit to this art and to the enduring quality of originality in any form. You yourself are a phenom and a pleasure to watch/hear. I showed this video twice recently to college classes and it had the effect of blowing wide open a whole world of discovery. I've been reading some of the (much) earlier responses and I'm chagrined to find all the 'altered' comments. SOME PEOPLE NEVER GET IT, even when it's right in from of them! Please-more posts!
I think it's best to start from the beginning--early ragtime. Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, and James Scott. If you read music, then get some sheet music of those guys.
I'd also study Jelly Roll Morton, his rhythm in particular--though don't expect to master his style, I don't think I ever will.
The left hand in stride is key, which is why it's best to get a great ragtime base. Studying certain classical music helps too, people like Fats and Tatum were very much indebted to the classical style.
That was great -- I laughed out loud listening to you, not only because I was amazed but also amused at the little touches you added to this classic. Fats had a sense of humor too. I tried to learn this piece a couple of years ago but didn't get very far, it is a technical tour de force.
And what's with al the racial references in the comments? I am sick of this -- if you play jazz no one cares about your race. Give it a rest already!
i havnt listened to this in a while, i just read my old coment and it has -2 rating, which is sad. you like j russel robinson, the white boy with black fingers. i think i have a transcription from perfessor bill or something, how long did it take you to learn this. really enjoyed the ending, nice gliss

You would have to rewind all the way back to George Gershwin to find anywhere near the talent...at his age...
ingfall1 2 years ago
yikes, what a compliment! Though I could easily show you tons of better live youtube performances. Thanks though!
Though I didn't get into jazz and stride until I was about 20, I started playing Gershwin as far back as 8 or 9, and I love the guy just as much today.

hahaha. You'd have to be a genuis to pump all that out while smiling like it's no big deal at all.

Nah, the genius is the man who writes the music, not who plays someone else's....
Fats Waller=a genius

This video is a masterpiece! It is a supreme credit to this art and to the enduring quality of originality in any form. You yourself are a phenom and a pleasure to watch/hear. I showed this video twice recently to college classes and it had the effect of blowing wide open a whole world of discovery. I've been reading some of the (much) earlier responses and I'm chagrined to find all the 'altered' comments. SOME PEOPLE NEVER GET IT, even when it's right in from of them! Please-more posts!

Wow awesome!! Thank you so much...
Have you seen my newest Fats Waller video, "Smashing Thirds"?

@foundring how do you sugest that I, as a begginer in this style of piano playing, should go about learning how to play this way. What to practice?

Yes Waller's music was brilliant.
good work by you.
