  • Sounds like a pissed-off mosquito!

  • the cylinder is smaller than a US quarter

  • This Is actually the second smallest I own smaller one.

  • On the Channel 4 series "The Secret Life of Machines" they put one of these on the end of a metre stick and used it to spin around someone in an office chair- it did a pretty good job.

  • whats the horsepower? or in this case.... ant power? no finger power!!

  • Sorry but the COX was Preceeded by the Alban Bambi which was 0.1 cc and so smaller than the Cox so the title goes to the Davies Charlton company of the isle of man for thier Alban Bambi, though it ceased production a long time ago, was nowhere near as powerfull as the Cox and more of a toy than a serious engine. It was deisel as oposed to glow plug or semideisel as the Cox is.

  • Had me one of these on a cox free-flight Heli in the 70s..

On her maiden flight she flew over the trees and lost it forever.

Serous bummer when your only 10 yrs old. LOL

  • ¡This is simultaneously the coolest and most annoying video ever!

  • How many hp?

    (Hamster power)

  • how much energy cuold it produce

  • @toshman3 probably a few watts

  • how did you start the engine without it wacking your finger?

  • @tnphysics It has a spring starter, you wind the prop backwards and then let go. The spring cranks the prop forwards and starts the engine for you. A lot less cut fingers this way, but it does rob you of a few hundred rpm.

  • I love it, except for the noise and the finger killing part

  • Phew!! Beautiful engine, beautiful sound!

  • Nice to see it, however please correct the volume in the title, Cox Tee Dee .010 cu. in. is 0.164cc, it's the Cox Pee Wee .020 that is 0.33cc.

  • @agridoc Thanks for pointing this out schoolboy error on my part! Other specs to those interested are-Weight .49 oz. Bore.237" Stroke.226" Displacement .00997 Cu in.----.163cc overall height 1 17/36" overall length1 1/2" Width 1 1/16" Prop size 3" diameter by 1 1/4" pitch nominal 27500rpm. Does anyone know how much power is needed so spin a prop of this size to the speed quoted. I wouldn't mind knowing the power to weight ratio come on boffins let me know the answers.

  • @fliedaway did you make it or can i buy it somewhere ??? please respond im trying to convert a micro sct by losi into a nitro

  • @baptistedeschrevel you can by them on ebay or at select hobbies but they do no have a throttle and are not very well suited to rc cars they would require heavy modification but it can be done.

  • @nitroairplane thanks :)

  • want to sell it?

  • I'm laughing my ass off @ rider2themax's comment. How true after awhile they do sound like that.

  • now that workbench is going to take off.

  • where did you get that at? i want one

  • where did you get that? I want one

  • Man that's annoying... I want one.

  • I bet it still has more power than a civic

  • 5 % nitro ???

  • the traxxas 3.3 nitro engine revs to 50,000rpm

  • @Straightsix76

Yes but the little engine in the video has no bearings or anything.

  • What? Diesels do not need glow plugs.

  • DANGET! My I phone wont start up!

  • That is... BEAST!!! i love it!!

  • That's a turbo booster for a budgie...

  • this sounds like a mosquito from hell

  • My mazda redlines at 800 rpm xD

  • @simusfr i hope not because its fucked you mean 8000rpm

  • how exactly was this even built? like.. how are the parts manufactured?

  • @madnesscombat5 built by tiny gnomes

  • I am sure this has been asked somewhere, but are these techinically "deisels" even though they don't use "oil", or are they 2-stroke engines without ignition?

  • Not diesels - they count on the glow plug glowing to keep them going. The compression ratio is not high enough to ignite on pressure alone. At least not the TD .010.

  • No, and how can an engine run without ignition?!?! They use nitromethane which is ignited with a glow plug. U start the glow off by what he connected at start and then it keeps itself warm by the combustions.

  • Wow this engine spins faster then the F1 engines.

  • I didnt realise that the worlds oil shortage was this serious!

  • does this engine have the fuel tank built in?

  • The fuel tank is the black piece on the back of the engine.

  • do you sell it?

  • the startup made me jump!

  • he almost lost his fingers when he started it

  • no becuase the engine is so small a cut is the only thing to worry about and then not even a bad one .46 and up is what u gotta worry about ive heard horror stories of people losing fingers becuase of them

  • ha the sooo weak even a 049 (almost 5 times bigger)

can be stoped witout a scratch

  • I don't think so. I've already made a serious cut (about 1 cm of skin completely cut) with a .049 engine

  • I used to have a couple of those in different model cars...Don't think they made them for very long...but damn they would haul ass

  • it gets kinda annoying after a while

  • these things must be pretty fuel efficient like i mean you could probably use them for lone flights ...... (its my dream to build a mini drone with a computer module, i dont know why but i think its sort of a cool idea especially if you life near the national park

    )

  • Problem is, they are also weak, so you couldn't carry much fuel.

  • yeah ive been thinking of this problem and it might be over come running pure oxygen through the air inlet and a tiny amount of fuel just to keep the triangle of combustion maintaned and it might also increase the efficiency

  • But then would the engine run as meant to run?

  • yes because all i plan to do is replace the air that would currently be supplying the engine with oxygen which removes all the non flammable impurities

  • Ah, I see.

  • but if you do that you will need to change the fuel air ratio because you will have way too much oxygen in the system and not enough fuel. it would be just like running nos without any additinal fuel, it would just toast the motor. and you would experience problems carrying enough oxygen for more than a minute of flight.

  • yeah im still experimenting with different ideas

  • 2 stroke diesel, nothing like it!

  • they have some rc car engines that will do over 30,000 i have heard. i bet you could press more out of it if you wanted

  • wow ur daring having ur fingers so close to a prop spinning at 27500 rpm that that fast that by the time u count to 1 it has spun 450 full turns

  • holy shit. 27500 rpm.

thatll make the prop take your fingers off

  • amazing, sounds like my gf when shes bitching at me

  • ROFL

  • HAHAHAHHAH BEST COMMENT EVER!!!!!!

    so true...LOL

  • ha ha mine too man, good one!

  • that thing looks like it would take your fuckin hand off

  • cool, i got a cox .049

  • Get your fingers out the way.... fast!!

  • install external cooler!! my 1970 cox engine (rare I guess) has one it almost blew up years ago so I got one!!

  • cool very small weird sounding screamer please stop writing everything run together it makes it hard to read

  • this video is great if you turn up the volume all the way! haha

  • so damn annoying but still very cool, you can even see the bubbles inside the gas tube going in to the cylinder xD

  • The biggest fingers i ever saw....or the smallest engine....

  • How can something be so cool, yet so damn annoying?

  • wahts the motorbike in the background?

  • put that in an rc that would be awesome

  • thats what its for

  • ok lol

  • That's a tiny cox engine, i used to have a free flight 0.20 based heli.

  • its an over sized insect!!!

  • where can i buy one? local hobby shop doesn't have any.

  • it reminds me of a small dog all noise and bite!

  • i wonder how much torque it has

  • shit there's some rpm there!!!

  • thaths a finger killer

    dude

  • this is a COX engine!

  • put your finger in the prop.

  • ROFL! =P

  • yeah that looks cool

  • Hey filedaway, can you please tell me where you got that engine and how much it costs? I would really appreciate it.

  • You can find these on E-bay / Craigs list.

  • i got mine for about 30 bucks

  • very dangerous for fingers :-(

  • LOL, the comment says: "Prop spins at 27,500 r.p.m. man thats fast. Your car redlines at 6000.

Well, well, well. A miniature gas turbine jet engine redlines anywhere between 120,000 - 150,000 r.p.m.s, depending on the size. Man, now thats fast!!! Your Tee Dee Cox redlines at 27,500. LOL!

  • LOL,your comment says:"A miniature gas turbine jet redlines anywhere between 120,000-150'000r.p.m depending on the size.Man now thats fast!!! WELL,WELL,WELL, the electron travels around the nucleus at near the speed of light!MAAAN NOW THATS FAST! None of the above have reciprocating masses and neither power my car or motorbike, therefore i'm not interesed in jet turbines or quantum physics. I.C engines have charm character and personality, need I say any more.

  • I like all engines, be they rotary, piston, or jet turbines. All have their unique characteristics.

  • @fliedaway What would the rpm of an electron around an atom be I wonder? Just for fun I tried to figure that out. I got 1,144,000,000,000,000,000 rpm assuming an atom with a 1.57 nanometer circumference and an electron travailing at the speed of light. Kind of irrelevant, i know, but like I said, for fun.

  • @fliedaway Couldn't agree more, although it would be nice to have a gas turbine powered bike or car :)

  • @Helivz 27,500 IS FAST for a reciprocating piston engine, name one that spins faster???

  • @pattyaaron There are some .21s and bigger, that boast an r.p.m. range close to 35,000.

  • Very cool! I have 10 of the .010, cool engine. I also have a large stock of new glow heads for this engine and the .020 & 049-051. Look me up on Ebay vintageglowengines is my user name. Cheers, Reggie

  • Lucky you! Yesterday I went to the local hobby shop, asking to buy that engine. They are out of them; Cox no longer makes them and stores are not distributing them.

Are you able to machine two cylinder heads together to make a twin .010? That would be superkewl, double the noise.

Are you willing to sell a .010 and .020?

  • What's all that bubbling going on in the back of the engine near the end of the video?

  • Air bubbles, getting low on fuel

  • It may be too, the oil residue that comes out of the cylinder, and the air from the prop is pushing it back.

  • probally takes about 5 seconds to come fully up to temp. id be better if you could very the throttle

  • WHAT!?! a dentist drill??? XD

  • powerfull o.O

  • I have one of those, but I inherited it in a seized state. How about a mini turbo? Mw ha ha ha

  • @mikeb1444 Take the glow head and all plastic parts off and soak in diesel fuel for a few days. The fuel they use contains caster oil that acts like glue when it dries out.

  • nice idea

  • put thos on roller blades !!!!

  • cool

  • the head is small

  • yes. yes it is.

  • what was that thing u put on top to get it going i never got anything with mine and where's the gas go what do u use for gas mine just has a short peice of tube for a gas line should it go to a tank

  • the thing on top was a glow starter just easier to put on that Planters peanut (that is a peanut made in metal)

  • no idea what ur talking about

  • the last part i meant to say it the size of a peanut. The nickname for them is "peanut" motors

  • there is probably a fuel line that goes through the stand and to a tank that u cant see. the thing that he put on it is called a glow-starter. It's an electrified piece of metal that connects to the glow plug or spark plug, thus giving it heat for ignition.

  • if you look at the rear of the motor you see the black piece the moter is mounted on with the two short pipes sticking up, thats the tank, i uses to have a motor like that on a free flight helicopter

  • i have 2 of these a play cox thimble drone and a helicopter never run them all there thou i got them from a old guy but he never said nothin about them can u tell me about them

  • I really like your engine test stand,,, :0)

  • I have one of those new in a box. I don't want to run it because I don't know where to get a replacement glow head.

  • I love these little engines! I recently posted a couple of vids of mine flying in my LaStick rc plane. Hope to build a couple more planes for .010s someday. Fun to hear them screaming around the sky.

  • Liked that vid. The Cox copper reed valve engine is still great. I have a Tiger 0.12 RC car engine that is rated to run 30,000 rpm's on 20% nitro 80% methonal fuel. I usualy run 10% nitro, it does the job.

  • Thanks for the concern but I didn't hurt my fingers and never have the engine is fitted with a spring starter I wind it 1 turn in a clockwise direction then let go faster than bruce lee moves.

  • holey crap !

that thing made me jump when i watched it first ! i turned my speakers right up lol

    how do you stop it?

  • nice! wait is that an old moped or dirtbike or motorcycle in the back ground?

  • shits louder than a ricers honda

  • shoot!!!! that looked like it hurt try this get a little electric motor (say a tape recorder/hard drive,etc..) and a soda bottle cap pour some rubber cement into it and let it cure while thespinner is in the cement it will cure and not stick to the metal carefully drill a hole through the cap, insert motor shaft and super glue it inrig up battery, momentary on push button switch it should work i never tried still is cheaper than going to the hospital for stitches if you try it post a video

  • wow with the finger, cutting it a little cloe , no?

  • ?!?!?!?! is ur finger bleeding?

  • some nitro engines rev to 43000rpm

  • Nice engine. Very few people know of this scale and the limited production runs that were made available, it has been discontinued. I have a video of my Cox .010 with throttle control and dual exhaust system running. Just click on my name.

  • Nice, but you are leaning it too much.

  • that thing is like a chihuawa lol small loud and bite bite, dude watch ure hands i personally would removed the prop before doing that or get an old broken one and cut off the props so its round

  • Remove the prop before doing what - running it? You can't do that, it's air cooled and will overrev without the prop load.

  • TD 0.10 love nytro if you run at 15% to 25% you lean it out more.

  • my engine is much quieter

  • i have a engine like that exept my glowplug is fried, the glow plug is part of the cylinder head, were can i get another one?

  • does it have throttle?

  • There is no throttle just a mixture valve in the choke, run it lean, rich or somewhere in between, flat out all the same

  • If you are interested in a throttle setup for cox .010 or similar size check out my video.

  • Where did you get that glow plug heater/starter

  • The glow clip is a vintage kiel kraft item made in the 60's and 70's available on ebay for a small fortune thanks

  • Sounds like a large, angry fly.

  • Loud.

  • nice engine =) Be careful with your fingers

  • cool, always wondered. now i know thanks.
