I just wanted to say you're ubercool and your advice is exactly what this hobby needs, practical and realistic.
I myself started dicking around with RC heli's, as you can do that indoors, but seeing the planes you test fly really makes me want to also buy one of those.
i read about a guy who ordered a great planes silhouette. he did not order it through towerhobbies he got it from some other company. it came in a box that was perfect but the plane was like debris from a foam factory explosion. he said he will never buy from great planes again because of that when it was actually the destributors fault.
Hot clue and cement is garbage for foamys. CA is by far the best and fastest setting for normal applications, and 5 minute epoxy, used sparingly is the best for heavy applications.
Pull servo apart , switch 2 wires to the motor , and switch the 2 outside wires on the potentiometer(lil circuitboard) , there are only 3 you just have to reverse the outter 2 . Servo reversed-done.
I have one of these and I straightened out the rod on the right elevator, heated it up and melted a slot in the right rear stabilizer and it works perfectly.
Hello 1st Time owner of the F-18 from Nitro. This Video helped me with making my decision ~~ !!! Thank You !!! ~~~ Assembly was easy and I used small Picture Eye hooks to guide the rear servo rods. Closest Hobbytown or R/C shop is 115 miles from me Cont..
you can use an old sevo lead, just cut the ends off and tie them together all you are doing is shorting the connector out it will work just fine good luck gary
i disagree' i dont like art tech because of the poor quailty planes ive bought from them which wouldnt even take off the ground their planes are to nose heavy....
a while back i got a skyfly flyzone plane for xmas & i can actually blame my crashes on it. the rudders on this didnt connect to the servo via a metal wire, they connected by fishing line, literally. the rudder had a rubber band as a resistance, & to lower altitude was simply lettin the rubberband pull the rudder down. the cheapest thing ever.
i bought this jet, it flies verry scale, but extremly, slow and underpowered, but isn't that the point of ductedfans annyway! the elevator IS verry bendy, so i reversed the wackey servo job and redid the push-rod with some extra carbon fibre i had around, i wouldreccomend this plane to annyone who knows how to fly. one thing tho, the foamis verry "pretty" and easy to mar and the main lg is verry verrrry bendy thanks nightflyer for another grate review
Can you please tell me where to get a 100-200mah 7.2-7.4 light lipo battery for a mini yak-54 foamy. I can't find one.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I love that clock going off in the back at 1:32 hehe
oh yea, i just ordered one of these bad boys through nitroplanes. prob will do the same modifications as you did with the connecting rods for the elevators.
You can buy a bag of 20 for $2.00 at most hobby stores. They are ball links for Blade 400 helicopter. I have this same jet, I didn't know what I was going to do about this problem. Luckily NightFlyer came up with this solution weeks after I built my plane.
Its worth the time it took to cover the whole thing in packing tape. The paint peels up with the tape so make sure you line it up good then just use a razor blade to trim it all up. Use that sim that it came with for a day and get confident with it! :)
lol i got this grom HK, but a reciever ready version , just saw the parcel yday, they wont let me take it from the post office. saying that it will be delivered only to ur home :P. so will se it on tuesday hopefully.
:O im thinking of buying this one from nitroplanes today or tomorrow since theres a black friday sale and this plane is going for 99 dollars! But im a beginner... so not such a good idea?
art tech do some well detailed models, just had the MD500 D quite impressve scale details just the 35mhz radio let it down full of dry joints hey but thats rc for ya!!! good one jeff and dave
I had problems with the motor of the ArtTech F-18 Hornet. After the 3rd flight, it blows about 80%, not enough power for lift. Anyone else had this problem?
this is a great review! looking through some of the comments, I guess the ef2000 would be a good beginner edf? Are there any other ones like it? and also, do u have any advice for beginner r/c pilots?
Yes, but I like strong. Too many things have gone wrong with planes I didn't beef up. Flexing rods are not good in real planes either. And when you experience elevator or aileron flutter at high speeds with gears ripping out of your servos, you may change your mind.
@NightFlyyer 3D F-18 solves most "wrongs". The 1st in Aviation history flight tests of Stealth, Tailless complete 3D Vectoring [STV] were conducted in Israel in 1987 and reported on May 18, 1987 by Aviation Week. Video in a Facebook cite ["Benjamin Gal-Or"] shows how the 100-years-old, stall-spin-dangerous flight control is replaced with 3D vectoring. 3D F-15 & F-16 scaled 3D models were used after first flight tests with STV prototypes provided the first-ever proof-of-concept for STV and 3D.
which EDF jet would you recommend as a first ever jet? I have some experience with a supercub and i want to upgrade but i cant pick which one is the best for a first jet, they all look pretty, and fragile.
The Exceed requires a bigger battery and charger, so that is a drawback, but I sure like the way it flies. I like the Sound and speed of the ArtTech too. Both good.
How good was the simulator that came with it? Being rookie with RC planes could the simulator be enough to take me from a 2 channel straight wing to that?
It is a free simulator, so dont expect much, but none the less it is a good way to learn the controls, and flight. It will give you a false sense of security. If you have an instructor or a test pilot for at least one flight of the real thing, that is the best scenerio. This jet is easy to fly, but like all, they take practice to land, and that is needed to learn most.
Thanks for your reply. A couple days ago I just bought the FS One simulator, wow! I now know I love ailerons and elevators, my sky fly trainer is so hard in comparison to many other planes. Going to log more hours on this, buy a slow plane and than a ducted fan jet. I'm alone in this hobby where I am so this is a self tought thing. Your reviews are very helpful by the way (and the problems you solve during construction). Great job.
Exactly. THis happens to a lot of us and I certainly can relate. When I was flying for the motion picture industry or doing demonstrations, I used to get that. It will go away as you improve. Relax.
Hi Dave! I may have already mentioned it, but in response to the problem Jeff had with the Epoxy, GWS foam glue works great! Has about the same consistancy as epoxy but no messy mixing required. Also, I wish more of the models came without transmitter & receivers. Even the better radios that come with these are rather cheesy.
dave would u recomend the f/a-18 or the ef2000 for a first edf/depemding on flight charicteristics and handling.also turning ability and speed.
i have and easy star right now and the battery dies withing 40 seconds of flight and i cant turn i tried adjusting the servo rod but i cant get it unscrewed and now its striped all to hell so i might have to add some foam to the rudder and idk what to do with the motor
If you already know how to fly, I think you will find the EF 2000 the easiest to slow down and land.. Sorry about the easy star. Make a homemade plane with the parts.
That is a relative question as most people think they can do it till they try it. It is easy to fly if you have an instructor show you or land it for you. It is the landings that most have problems with. But if your oka with the FB, then you should be able to fly it fine.
Thanks dave for the battery info. By the way, have you checked out or flown the new bigger scale 90mm jet from banana hobbies? I discoverd the web site last night.
hi again, ive only flew the hz supercub, pkz radian, and pkz spitfire, i also like flying at fast speeds so do u think this would be ok, is this aircraft capable of taking off and landing o grass, thanks
That battery is already a big one and is 4 cells needing a special charger too. It wont make a noticeable amount of difference anything bigger plus the CG would change and there is no way to move the battery to do that either.. Just get a spare battery, but they are not cheap.
Hi, implanning on getting this, and do u think every 'hornet jet, like that one' has a servo problem, that being it flexis to much, and do u have to glue the wings on.
Yep, they have the same flex, and if I were you I would fix it the same way and the way I did it on my Exceed F-18 (blue angels one) Wing get glued on.
Interesting... in order to set that up right, you would need a 6-channel radio with proper reversing, and that would increase the cost. Could also use a y-cable and servo reversing cable too I guess, but I like the pushrod guide that you used... saves from a tricky radio setup and re-engineering of the whole thing! I would probably set this up with 6 channels on my Spektrum DX7 - 2 independent elevators, 2 independent ailerons, nose wheel, and throttle. Good flying - you got it!
Yeah definitely... to do what I said there would be "non-trivial" and expensive too. Looks like it flies good already, and I agree - I prefer to leave things along when they are working fine.
Well if your a good lander, it is no problem. Jeffs is still hanging in there, however the nose gear is bent back from his crash, and he has left it that way, making it a low rider. LOL.
well i dont like flying fast planes my first incstict is to land right when i get it flying i got my firebird commander 2 rc plane and crashed it my secend flight. have any tips for me i would really aprechiat it
Thats a really well done review. My buddy Greg has the same jet and we switched out the entire system and it now runs on a DX6i. What an improvement. Did Jeff remember to sand the paint off the areas where he was applying the epoxy? 5/5
Oh you gotta love the 6i. I never had any complaints about it, even after it crashed my t-rex 450. Ok, the it being me and the crash being because I flew it out of my range of sight lol....
art tech could had made the paint darker. it look cooler and easier to see in the sky.

Helicopters are difficult for most, so relax, study my 9 heli flying tips and make sure to practice practice practice.

Thanks. Hey, well to me, since it flies so well as is, I decided not to modify it.
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Yeah definitely... to do what I said there would be "non-trivial" and expensive too. Looks like it flies good already, and I agree - I prefer to leave things along when they are working fine.

i really enjoy watching your videos, nice job.

Great. Glad it worked for you.

What's your opinion on the wheels? They look so flimsy and fragile.
Petersworld518 3 years ago
Well if your a good lander, it is no problem. Jeffs is still hanging in there, however the nose gear is bent back from his crash, and he has left it that way, making it a low rider. LOL.

Dave have u seen that this plane comes with a 2.4 GHz TX/RX system now!!!! I can't believe it it actually comes with a 2.4 GHz system!!!! AWESOME!!!

wats funner to fly a helicopter or an airplane
yura54312 3 years ago
Airplanes are easier, but helis are more strenuous and nervewracking. Both fun to me, and why I fly both.

Thats a really well done review. My buddy Greg has the same jet and we switched out the entire system and it now runs on a DX6i. What an improvement. Did Jeff remember to sand the paint off the areas where he was applying the epoxy? 5/5
ssrc30 3 years ago
Thanks kindly. Well Jeff's stabs did not fall off, like the PSPboy89's above did, so I guess he did. Nice to have it on the 6i, eh?
NightFlyyer 3 years ago
Oh you gotta love the 6i. I never had any complaints about it, even after it crashed my t-rex 450. Ok, the it being me and the crash being because I flew it out of my range of sight lol....
