I loves this movie!! Is one of the most overrated movies of all time...and is very good...I glad that the new generations are discover this movie again
I actually love when he screws up and nearly gets killed because he doesn't really know what he's doing....but this was such a COOL MOVIE to watch as a kid!!
When the made this movie, the special effects served the story. Nowadays, the story serves the special effects. When too much CGI is used, I think it actually makes it look more fake, not less.
The shots of the rocketeer flying next to the plane (when the woman sees him) are *flawless,) even by today's standards. You can see that they were using old technology for some of the scenes and new CGI as well. A mixed bag, but a fantastic scene.
The thing about this scene is yes the FX are dated a bit and you can see the flaws easily. But it doesn't matter because of all the emotion & excitement that carries the scene through. Too many filmmakers of today are more worried about getting all the CGI right and not enough about whether the scene is powerful and moving. Sure, use the best FX you can afford but don't lose sight of the entire scene by only focusing on the individual parts. This is one of the best scenes in any superhero movie.
I like Cliff's character a lot. He's a man only too willing to engage in thrilling heroics, and his heart's in the right place, but at the same time he's an idiot fly boy who's dense enough to act as a heat sink for his own rocket.
@Apollomasque The Rocket can't burn cold, because that's physically impossible, by the simple fact that rockets BURN. There is a cooling system, that prevents it from overheating and blowing up, but the rocket stream itself would still be hot
@KingofFPS One possible reason is that it was released only a month before one of the highest grossing movies of 1991, if not THE highest grossing movie of 1991-- Terminator 2: Judgement Day. That, and Disney did an absolutely piss-poor job of marketing this movie to the general public. Probably some other factors too, but those I remember. And I agree-- this movie was one of MY fondest childhood memories as well-- I watched this until I about wore the damn VHS tape out.
one of my all time favorites....although i would of liked to have seen more than one Rocketeer, im glad there didnt end up being any sequels due to there being very lousy sequels to great memorable films, like the Rocky series....
Also the 'Iii Like it!" thing was perfect! :p Classic fun.
Shame they don't make movies like these anymore. Now it's heavy on the special effects, low on the acting. Hell, some Fan Movies are a lot better than some of the movies they make in Hollywood. The only thing that makes or breaks a movie is the preformance of the actors, not how good the special effects are. Those are secondary.
@Patrick200717 I wouldn't think so-- for one, Rocketeer predates Shellhead by about thirty years (the original pulp comics this movie was based on); two, Iron Man wears a full suit of powered armor, not just a jetpack; and three, Iron Man's trademark mode of flight is jets mounted in his armor's boots, not a pack that he wears on his back.
He's based on Rondo Hatton, a Hollywood actor who suffered from the disfiguring condition acromegaly, as did Richard Kiel ('Jaws' from James Bond), Ted Cassidy who played 'Lurch' in the Addams Family, and André the Giant.
oh ya, dont compare rocketeer to ultraman, what are you nuts? the ultraman is a poor excuse of a TV entertainment, this is more comparable to Ironman, pfft ultraman, you should be a shamed to even mention ultraman here
