  • Grammar is important! Capital letters are the difference betwen helping your Uncle Jack off a horse, and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

  • Gr4mM4R 5t0PpeD B31nG 1MP0Rt4Nt B0UT 10 Y34r5 Ag0, N0B0DY C4r35 B0uT 1T N0W

  • I'm 404'ing on this analism, please dumb people don't go on these "using your brain" "youtube" posts.

  • I agree, it's important not just for everyone who is a native speaker of English, but for people who speak English as a second language, it can be difficult for them to understand sentences like (especially important in business):

ur rite, becmoes a problem wen de ppl cant get da msg dat u sayin

  • i can use these PUGS u speak of when i need to

  • HELL YES!

  • u r rite lol it becmoes a problem wen ppl dnt get wot ur sayin tho

  • when its written like how your writing then its a problem

  • Chris pirillo typing a comment on youtube is not like a formal Email for a job you fucking idiot ..its often like texting on a phone for some people ..not formal...

  • Hmm spell colour...

  • just type the word into 'Google' and it will check it for you.

  • I hate for example wut wat and write instead of right

  • Shit head? Maybe?

  • Punctuation and grammar are important, no matter where you are. I won't even take a shortcut in texts or IM. I have a serious pet peeve when people use "u" to express you, etc. Although, the person on the other end may be very intelligent, it cuts their IQ in half to me when I am on the receiving end. Call me shallow, or what you will.

  • I know, I hate people who use u, ur, wat etc.

I don't mind things like TV, NASA, IM...stuff like that.

  • Well fucking obvious, because those are abbreviations actually USED in spoken language. You don't SAY wat / ur / your bullshit. That's just retarded spelling.

  • @DeeJayBounce Don't use caps, you can't virtually shout.

  • That's called emphasis. Stick it up your e-rectum and hope it reaches your skull.

  • You can't VIRTUALLY SHOUT? SAYS WHO ?

  • The best thing of all is, these people who decide to not improve their grammar, claiming we 'call the grammar police' or 'go screw ourselves, grammar Nazis' are actually helping the grammar lovers to get better job offerings, and better places at University/College unless they shape up. This is yet another reason to be grateful for idiots who decide to avoid correct grammar ^_____^

  • I used to be so anal about the grammar, and correct people at every turn, since i seemed to constantly be surrounded by illiterates. I have since altered my perspective, and now I just laugh to myself.

You couldn't WRITE some of the comedy these idiots come up with =)

  • I truly think people SHOULDN'T improve their grammar and spelling. I personally find it absolutely hilarious when somebody types "your so (whatever)" or "were are you going today". It's that bit of humor for the day, realizing there are idiots out there that make your day that little bit brighter. If they want to improve, it's all good. If however they type 'ooohh go call the grammer police' (note I spelled grammar wrong on purpose) then I claim full right to laugh at their stupid ass. :)

  • I use Google Chrome sometimes and it actually does spell check for you but I can't ever seem to find where it is. I looked in its tool area but it's not there.

  • Technical knowledge is more important in the hiring process than proper grammar and usage. All things being equal, employers would rather have good writers on staff, but they're not going to hire an English major with no relative experience to program computers or manage an office, no matter how eloquent he or she might be.

  • relative = relevant. How embarrassing : )

  • fucking shit!

  • I believe you mean "Fucking shit!"

  • yes I always use propper speeling and panctuation when I type

  • Chris is cool :)

  • Is there a spell checker app for the iPhone?

  • Is there any good firefox addon to fix grammar and such?

  • it's built in

  • I had ann English exam today and I used as much PUGS as I cood!!

  • Please take into account that a large percentage of the online community does not have English as their mother tongue. Therefor these people cannot be blamed for spelling errors. Remember, a lot of people speak english, but few americans/english speak a foreign language.

On the other hand, native speakers should pay attention to spelling and grammar. Poor spellers and writers seldom are taken seriously.

  • I agree with you. But still, foreign speakers should be blamed for their spelling errors. I'm not a native english speaker, but I try to speak as well as I can. That's what all people have to do. Try.

  • @gertvanderpaelt

If you are a Spanish-Speaking Brazilian and you go to an English-Speaking Forum Site, you CAN be blamed if you try asking questions in broken English translated from Google. Believe me, this has happened before. Jesus Christ.

  • Usage is important... Spelling and grammar, not so much.

  • well, this is how i type. i use periods but its not perfect. i dont know why but i never capitalize.

  • I agree 100% with Chris. In everything that I do online, even in chat rooms, I use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It just comes naturally to me.

  • "I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way" - Mark Twain.

I tend to agree with Twain on that, but I still think people should use spell check. If you are trying write something that you want others to read, it's a good idea if your message is at least comprehensible.

Fortunately spelling and grammar check is built in to OS X.

  • I cdnuolt blveiee taht I aulaclty cluod uesdnatnrd waht I was rdgnieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid -- aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are pelacd, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteers be in the rghit pclaes. The rset can be a taotl mses and you sitll can raed it wouthit a porbelm.

  • Thats great but mark doesn't have to get a job still. :D

  • No, as long as you get the point. No.

  • I do. Punctuation, not punctuations.

  • Did you konw taht it deos not mtater aobut seplling at all? All taht mttaers is taht the frsit and lsat lteters be in the rghit palce, the rset can be a cmopelet mses and you can udnersatnd it no porblem. Tihs is bceause the hmuan mnid dosen't raed eevry lteter by istlef but the wrod as a wlohe.

    Well, according to Cambridge University.

Chris, get real! You are wrong!!! Yes - you are!!!! Spelling does not matter.

  • To me it does. I cannot stand 'reedin meesagz dat l0ox leyeke dis, y0, 1t's r3d0nku10us'... Really.

  • Spelling does matter in a work context where you are writing short Emails to coworkers or even your boss. The Cambridge study is an interesting psychological study, but it won't help in communicating your message.

  • Not very well by the looks of it! Or is this just a test?

    'I do. Punctuation, not punctuations.'

    Better would have been:

    I do punctuation, not punctuations.

Anyway, both are words. I suppose the American dictionary is slightly different than that of the British dictionary. Hey, it is a different colour too!

  • In b4 "You didn't trail it with a slash" - I did.

  • That spellcheck link does not work. "File cannot be found".

  • I think correct grammar and spelling are important, because you have to read a lot to learn how to spell and if you read things that are abbreviated and misspelled how would one learn what is right? I always encourage people to read so they could learn to spell, and when I text to certain people, I don't abbreviate because I want them to learn.

  • Yup I also agree with Chris on this one. Although I may not be perfect atleast I try. :)

  • I really hate it when anyone uses short hand text style for messages, it bugs the hell out of me. As long as they at least try to spell their sentences out in full I'm happy. Even if the grammar isn't 100% correct, English is a hard language.

  • English is the easiest language around. You don't have stupid characters or other bugging stuff. Just plain old letters.

  • LMAO you know you sounded like a right moron there :)

  • Okey eye am lesten two yew.

  • Ye's

  • you put this up because of me you turd!!! lol

I only use correct punctuation in business letters and writing papers

  • that depends if you're writing a report on something but if you're typing and IM'ing people that ain't important

  • I do not mind misspelled words, but when somebody makes a sentence like, "omg ur a tard lol r u retrded or sumtin," I lose a little hope in humanity.

  • Agreed.

  • i cant spell . lol

  • NERD

  • Yes, he is. In fact, he's a GEEK!

  • i duno... one of em for sure

  • He's a GΣΣK.

  • cool

  • An emphatic yes.
