I agree, it's important not just for everyone who is a native speaker of English, but for people who speak English as a second language, it can be difficult for them to understand sentences like (especially important in business):
ur rite, becmoes a problem wen de ppl cant get da msg dat u sayin
Chris pirillo typing a comment on youtube is not like a formal Email for a job you fucking idiot ..its often like texting on a phone for some people ..not formal...
Punctuation and grammar are important, no matter where you are. I won't even take a shortcut in texts or IM. I have a serious pet peeve when people use "u" to express you, etc. Although, the person on the other end may be very intelligent, it cuts their IQ in half to me when I am on the receiving end. Call me shallow, or what you will.
Well fucking obvious, because those are abbreviations actually USED in spoken language. You don't SAY wat / ur / your bullshit. That's just retarded spelling.
The best thing of all is, these people who decide to not improve their grammar, claiming we 'call the grammar police' or 'go screw ourselves, grammar Nazis' are actually helping the grammar lovers to get better job offerings, and better places at University/College unless they shape up. This is yet another reason to be grateful for idiots who decide to avoid correct grammar ^_____^
I used to be so anal about the grammar, and correct people at every turn, since i seemed to constantly be surrounded by illiterates. I have since altered my perspective, and now I just laugh to myself.
You couldn't WRITE some of the comedy these idiots come up with =)
I truly think people SHOULDN'T improve their grammar and spelling. I personally find it absolutely hilarious when somebody types "your so (whatever)" or "were are you going today". It's that bit of humor for the day, realizing there are idiots out there that make your day that little bit brighter. If they want to improve, it's all good. If however they type 'ooohh go call the grammer police' (note I spelled grammar wrong on purpose) then I claim full right to laugh at their stupid ass. :)
I use Google Chrome sometimes and it actually does spell check for you but I can't ever seem to find where it is. I looked in its tool area but it's not there.
Technical knowledge is more important in the hiring process than proper grammar and usage. All things being equal, employers would rather have good writers on staff, but they're not going to hire an English major with no relative experience to program computers or manage an office, no matter how eloquent he or she might be.
Please take into account that a large percentage of the online community does not have English as their mother tongue. Therefor these people cannot be blamed for spelling errors. Remember, a lot of people speak english, but few americans/english speak a foreign language.
On the other hand, native speakers should pay attention to spelling and grammar. Poor spellers and writers seldom are taken seriously.
I agree with you. But still, foreign speakers should be blamed for their spelling errors. I'm not a native english speaker, but I try to speak as well as I can. That's what all people have to do. Try.
If you are a Spanish-Speaking Brazilian and you go to an English-Speaking Forum Site, you CAN be blamed if you try asking questions in broken English translated from Google. Believe me, this has happened before. Jesus Christ.
I agree 100% with Chris. In everything that I do online, even in chat rooms, I use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It just comes naturally to me.
"I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way" - Mark Twain.
I tend to agree with Twain on that, but I still think people should use spell check. If you are trying write something that you want others to read, it's a good idea if your message is at least comprehensible.
Fortunately spelling and grammar check is built in to OS X.

Well, according to Cambridge University.
Chris, get real! You are wrong!!! Yes - you are!!!! Spelling does not matter.
Spelling does matter in a work context where you are writing short Emails to coworkers or even your boss. The Cambridge study is an interesting psychological study, but it won't help in communicating your message.
Not very well by the looks of it! Or is this just a test?
'I do. Punctuation, not punctuations.'
Better would have been:
I do punctuation, not punctuations.
Anyway, both are words. I suppose the American dictionary is slightly different than that of the British dictionary. Hey, it is a different colour too!
I think correct grammar and spelling are important, because you have to read a lot to learn how to spell and if you read things that are abbreviated and misspelled how would one learn what is right? I always encourage people to read so they could learn to spell, and when I text to certain people, I don't abbreviate because I want them to learn.
I really hate it when anyone uses short hand text style for messages, it bugs the hell out of me. As long as they at least try to spell their sentences out in full I'm happy. Even if the grammar isn't 100% correct, English is a hard language.
Grammar is important! Capital letters are the difference betwen helping your Uncle Jack off a horse, and helping your uncle jack off a horse.
