Someone says the Depression will be a walk in the park compared to what we're headed for? Isn't that why we have Social Security and Medicare/ Medicaid? We learned. People can take care of themselves only so much when it's against great odds, but together we can accomplish much more. Today it's getting BACK to every man, woman and child for their self.
That social security is only as good as the cash pouring in from successful individuals. As soon as that dries up the dependants are shafted. Medicaid will file for bankruptcy and take your cash. Get a practical education, stay healthy and learn to look after and fend for yourselves.
@1959mickey yup , you are idiot , oh god i can;t afford a new pool fails to compare to oh god i can't feed my kids , things arn't great here in the us but to compare to the depresion , you my friend are ignorant and need to dive of a cliff
Why the performer of this tune decided to omit some of the original lyrics is unclear. The redacted passage is: “On, The Big Rock Candy Mountain, Girls never wear a thing. An’ to your surprise, when you wake up, you’ll find a lipstick ring. The pharmacies’ backdoors don’t lock, and syringes grow on trees. There’s opium goo, and cocaine too; Those things occur in nature, in case yuh didn’t knew, on The Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
@illusions142 Yeah, me too. Except he censored it a bit. "Sycamore Trees" instead of cigarette trees, and he didn't sing the verse about not washing your socks, streams of alcohol, and hanging the jerk who invented work.
great depression was during the 1930's.....not the 1920's......so not really sure the comparison between that era and this song even makes sense or is appropriate. just my two cents. cool song. very folksy.
@passmethechronic yep. everything is just starting to fall apart, with immigration, environmental disasters, competition for resources, and a down spiraling economy. just a matter of time before the shit hits the fan...
@passmethechronic The strange thing is that people let you get away with a comment like this without saying anything. Buuuut, probably among the most ignorant, douchey things ever said on YouTube. On YouTube, man.
@passmethechronic Thumbs up, totally agree, but speak for yourself ;) Canada has a government regulated banking system, and has already recovered almost completely from the big bank shake-up :-P Get your passport ready, and learn to sing Oh Soviet Canukistan, where the commie pinko socialists now run pristine Oil Gulags in Alberta, and every lowly wage-slave has national health care thanks to our despicable soviet despot overlords :) At least until Stephen Harper gets his damn majority >.<
@passmethechronic thats pretty much just insulting to the people who's lives were destroyed by the great depression...which makes this look like a walk in the park...i won't even bother introducing all of the statistics because i'm pretty sure that what you said is just an uneducated guess
my Grandpa used to sing this to me back in the 50's
now, he told me that the "kings of the road" of that era would carry a hoe (with their meager belongings tied to it) on their shoulder to , maybe, weed a garden or patch of field for a meal or a few cents.
thus they became known as Hoe Boys--basterdized to Hobos
Love the song, but I think the video cuts from pic to pic rather quickly many times. A good effort, but I would prefer a bit more time to soak in each image IMHO.
Thanks - I knew they had their own marking language as to how to mark a house that gave handouts, etc. at one time. I wonder if they still exist lol.......with all our homeless these days.
"In the big rock mountian the jails are made of tin and you can walk out again, as soon as you are in" its great relaxing song when you are tired from work.
I'm pretty sure on a better quality version you can hear "where they hung the jerk that invented work" which makes more sense than Turk. But that's my opinion.
I think he said " hung the jerk that invented work"... It might sound like other things, but remember how long ago this was recorded... audio from that period wasnt exactly great
My Grandmother who raised me loved this old song. When she told me about it at night I thought of candy (of course). She also liked - A little Mourner Never Forgotten and The Strawberry Roan. She was a wonderful woman.
Thank you for posting this. Where can I fing the lyrics? I want to play this song on the guitar and sing it to my 88 year old Mother. Dan in Oregon, Illinois.

Just for the sake of argument, here's the original ending after they hung the 'turk':
The punk rolled up his big blue eyes and said the the jocker Sandy
I've hiked and hiked and wandered too and I ain't seen any candy
I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore
And I'll be damned if I'll hike any more
To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore
In the big rock candy mountains
