  • This song is amazing

  • this is what i call real music

  • 3 people haven't ever been to the big rock candy mountain!

  • Someone says the Depression will be a walk in the park compared to what we're headed for? Isn't that why we have Social Security and Medicare/ Medicaid? We learned. People can take care of themselves only so much when it's against great odds, but together we can accomplish much more. Today it's getting BACK to every man, woman and child for their self.

  • That social security is only as good as the cash pouring in from successful individuals. As soon as that dries up the dependants are shafted. Medicaid will file for bankruptcy and take your cash. Get a practical education, stay healthy and learn to look after and fend for yourselves.

  • @UserNamei5

    Nice!

  • @1959mickey yup , you are idiot , oh god i can;t afford a new pool fails to compare to oh god i can't feed my kids , things arn't great here in the us but to compare to the depresion , you my friend are ignorant and need to dive of a cliff

  • Only 2 guys that didn't find the way to Big Rock Candy Mountain :'(

  • where they hung the jerk that invented work :)

  • Why the performer of this tune decided to omit some of the original lyrics is unclear. The redacted passage is: “On, The Big Rock Candy Mountain, Girls never wear a thing. An’ to your surprise, when you wake up, you’ll find a lipstick ring. The pharmacies’ backdoors don’t lock, and syringes grow on trees. There’s opium goo, and cocaine too; Those things occur in nature, in case yuh didn’t knew, on The Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
  • @neatoauctions you're more than a little screwed up, prolly whcked out, too!

  • the cop was the only one in that entire video that was over weight

  • thanks this was great.

  • 1:23 nice picture but I don't think that's trickling down the rocks lol.

  • 2 people are just jackasses

  • wtf 2 people dislike this

  • @SuperMastermind3000 I Can Not Believe It Either.

  • R.I.P Bill Reed.

  • its the TURK who invented work.

the word jerk wasn't even used in that fashion until 1935

long after this song was written

  • hobo stands for "ho"meward "bo"ound

  • this is on a backpack commercial wtf its good enough on youtube

  • The two who disliked this should be hung.

  • @j2daesse like the turk who inveted work

  • My grandpa used to sing this to me all the time when I was young =)

  • @illusions142 Yeah, me too. Except he censored it a bit. "Sycamore Trees" instead of cigarette trees, and he didn't sing the verse about not washing your socks, streams of alcohol, and hanging the jerk who invented work.

  • @C3P0meetsData Hahah, yup me too.

  • @C3P0meetsData actually he did i listen to this all the time and i hear it are u def

  • great depression was during the 1930's.....not the 1920's......so not really sure the comparison between that era and this song even makes sense or is appropriate. just my two cents. cool song. very folksy.

  • never trust a hobo thats hikin..

  • My Great uncle Mo used to sing this ALL the time. RIP Uncle Mo.

It makes me cry when I listen to it.

    I miss him a lot.

    We shared a Birthday.

  • I'm sure 90 years from now everyone will be saying this about us, but, everybody from that era looks dirty and gross.

  • my dad wont stop listening to this song -.-

  • Sometimes it takes a simple commercial to remind me of the good thing from our past.

  • where they hung the jerk that invented work

  • man all the old songs are better than the crap they play today

  • I love this !

  • the great depression will be a walk in the fucking park compared to what we're headed for.

  • @passmethechronic and that's the TRUTH!

  • @passmethechronic Hahaha......No, no it won't.

  • Um, no.

  • @passmethechronic yep. everything is just starting to fall apart, with immigration, environmental disasters, competition for resources, and a down spiraling economy. just a matter of time before the shit hits the fan...

  • @passmethechronic youre damn right but all we can do is sit back and watch every thing fall apart

  • @passmethechronic ....The Man on The Moon in trade for it's TRILLIONS Deficit?...(itsa Big Dog what do anybody do!)

  • @passmethechronic We can all thank Dubya for that.

  • @passmethechronic The strange thing is that people let you get away with a comment like this without saying anything. Buuuut, probably among the most ignorant, douchey things ever said on YouTube. On YouTube, man.

  • @passmethechronic Thumbs up, totally agree, but speak for yourself ;) Canada has a government regulated banking system, and has already recovered almost completely from the big bank shake-up :-P Get your passport ready, and learn to sing Oh Soviet Canukistan, where the commie pinko socialists now run pristine Oil Gulags in Alberta, and every lowly wage-slave has national health care thanks to our despicable soviet despot overlords :) At least until Stephen Harper gets his damn majority >.<

  • @passmethechronic thats pretty much just insulting to the people who's lives were destroyed by the great depression...which makes this look like a walk in the park...i won't even bother introducing all of the statistics because i'm pretty sure that what you said is just an uneducated guess

  • @passmethechronic You have no idea what your talking about .

  • @passmethechronic couldnt agree more

  • at 0:32 it looks like the mountains in NC. (thats where im from)

  • did he sing "Blig"at 0:51?

  • my Grandpa used to sing this to me back in the 50's

now, he told me that the "kings of the road" of that era would carry a hoe (with their meager belongings tied to it) on their shoulder to , maybe, weed a garden or patch of field for a meal or a few cents.

thus they became known as Hoe Boys--basterdized to Hobos

Thanks for posting , ah, great memories

  • 1:32 gary bucy

  • When my belly starts a rumblin'

And I'm jonsen for s treat...

  • sarah silverman

  • @1959mickey there have always been hobos

  • @1959mickey there have always been hobos

  • but 1928 was before the depression.

  • @pawprint478

Sort of like how the Economy in America was great for everyone until the market crashed?

  • Love the song, but I think the video cuts from pic to pic rather quickly many times. A good effort, but I would prefer a bit more time to soak in each image IMHO.

  • O' Brother where art thou opening song WOOT!!

  • sweet

  • The best hobo song of all time!

  • harkens back to a time i can only dream of and read kerouac novels about.

  • boy this song still rings true today

  • Thanks - I knew they had their own marking language as to how to mark a house that gave handouts, etc. at one time. I wonder if they still exist lol.......with all our homeless these days.

  • Turk

  • Does anyone know the origon of the term HOBO,

  • I like this video a lot! It's just pure and true...like this song from the 1920's... Thanks for posting!

  • Turk

Archaic definition of "one who is cruel and tyrannical"

You are dealing with a shift in the useage of The English Language".

Word use and definitions shift with time.

  • "In the big rock mountian the jails are made of tin and you can walk out again, as soon as you are in" its great relaxing song when you are tired from work.

  • I'm pretty sure on a better quality version you can hear "where they hung the jerk that invented work" which makes more sense than Turk. But that's my opinion.

  • if you listen carefully, not to the whole word but the first letter you'll hear a T sound not a J sound. so I think it's turk not jerk. 1:57-1:58

  • I love this song. lo all my friends make fun of me cauz im a hardcore hip hop fan but i dont care. this is real fuckin music

  • I think he said " hung the jerk that invented work"... It might sound like other things, but remember how long ago this was recorded... audio from that period wasnt exactly great

  • @bsheezey yup its called the great Tribulation

  • @bsheezey Sad to say, you heard right. He did say the words "hung the jerk that invented work".

  • awesome old song.. i liked it since obwat also. and its jerk not turk. why in hell would they even talk about turkish ppl in 1920s bluegrass? idiots.

  • @isrit38372 um I believe he says jerk?

  • the lyres plzzz

  • David might have one for ya

  • I loved this since I first heard it in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Nice job on the video; I've never seen any of those photos before.

  • @bonzohart Me too. It just makes me feel good.

  • funny song, I like it :D

  • Wow very nice video!

  • they hung the turk who invented work

  • FYI... it's they hung the jerk..

  • FYI no it isn't............

  • yes it is

  • @imark100 Turk? I thought it was jerk.

  • @crbdudeman it is

  • @imark100 jerk

  • @imark100 i think its "jerk"

  • @imark100 Jerk man! Jerk! :P

  • @imark100 he says jerk

  • hung the JERK who invented work.

  • @imark100 its jerk

  • Just for the sake of argument, here's the original ending after they hung the 'turk':

The punk rolled up his big blue eyes and said the the jocker Sandy

I've hiked and hiked and wandered too and I ain't seen any candy

I've hiked and hiked till my feet are sore

And I'll be damned if I'll hike any more

To be buggered sore like a hobo's whore

In the big rock candy mountains

  • One of my favorite songs, and a a great one that we always play when we go out camping =]

  • gotta love old songs like this

  • luv this song - thers a buncha different versions of it

  • this song is amazing! =]

  • I agree with BigLoveZone. Excellent.

  • wonderful video!

  • "Where they hung the turk that invented work" ... xD

  • Isnt it jerk?

either way its great line :D

  • Srry if i misheard the line, i heard it like i did, and never looked up the lyrics, and had no idea.

I like this song cause it makes me feel good and always draws a smile on my face, and thats why i commented.

I never intended to hurt or insult anybody, so srry if you are.

No need to throw such words as you did though. It states of poor upbringing and weakness.

  • Dont sweat it I think they had to change it for societies standards yildem76 is a JERK!

  • I always thought it was "hung the church that invented works"

  • lol hey it rhymes

  • @tptwrc

sounds like they said the jerk who invented work to me

  • @jordanpasek He said Jerk. Many of the pix are of the depression homeless and not all are HOBO's........

  • No, they did hang the Turk young friend. Look it up in one of them folklore books.

  • AWSUM !!! Best version and video on here! Beautifully Done!

  • AWESOME WHAT CAN I SAY LOVE IT 10************* HEY CHARLIE TY FOR SHARING YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU oh more simple days love it

  • a gem. thank you

    peace to you

  • My dad used to read this to me as a poem when I was a kid. lol

  • My Grandmother who raised me loved this old song. When she told me about it at night I thought of candy (of course). She also liked - A little Mourner Never Forgotten and The Strawberry Roan. She was a wonderful woman.

  • Is this McClintock singing?

  • Yes it is McClintock I thank in 1928,

  • Thank you for posting this. Where can I fing the lyrics? I want to play this song on the guitar and sing it to my 88 year old Mother. Dan in Oregon, Illinois.

  • @binary48 - Indeed.
