  • I'm 64.

    I never forgot.

  • Lol gotta love the Freddie Mercury stache on that cat.

  • What happened to this kind of music!?

  • Comment removed

  • Good music, i mean, Real Good Music!

  • Another goodie from my senior year in high school, still in my 45 collection....

  • God, of course they lip-syncing! Have you ever seen a person drum and play a trumpet at the same time?

  • @jpaulr56 What? Your kidding of course. I was convinced they had invisible cords to their guitars. They never let anyone play live back then. I saw the Bee Gees on Johhny Carson & the song started at 78 RPM. Cut back to Carson who is in tears. Re-introduces the band or as it said it the ones who are still on stage. The poor guys had to feel like idiots but they just went with it.

  • @jpaulr56 - Believe it or not, he did. ( ..nothing complicated, but still not easy! Haven't you ever seen the old 1-man-bands, one guy playing multiple instruments at the same time?)

  • You had the power to turn out the lights? Yeah, right! You had the power to kick him between the balls. LOL.

  • Garbage version is better: I Think I'm Paranoid.

  • Alright...tell the truth...who lost the seat to the drum kit?

  • I didn't know the construction worker from the Village People played bass on this song!

  • You are right, pretty much all the shows we watched back then songs lip & instrument synch'ed. That is why you see guitars with no cords for amps/power. There were no wireless electric guitars then. Most every show was done this way then. Ed Sullivan had them live at times. They strictly monitored words in songs. He told Morrison he was not so say the phrase "girl we couldn't get much higher" in "Light My Fire". He did. That kept Morrison off his future shows and others, Sullivan was livid.

  • @djepsonatmastnet Yeah Ed also told The Rolling Stones to change "Lets spend the night together" to lets spend some time together, they did but you can watch Mick roll his eyes with cotempt..

  • Heard this song on the 'Oldies' station, reminds me times growing up, even though i was born in the 70s, still <3 60s music...

  • he's not even coming close to hitting those drums or cymbals.

  • They're lip-syncing!

  • @macsnafu I was just thinking that!! I just realized that ALL the tv performances back then were lip synced...nowadays we bust on everyone who does it!! lol

  • I am on such a 60s music kick right now. And I'd be screaming right along with those girls...the lead singer is a hottie ;-)

  • brownindian17 a belated thanks for your service. I love this song, this group and the stand-up drummer. Wish we could go back to this era.

  • remember this very well. the summer of 1967, a few months before i was drafted.

  • Originally, the Beatles had a scruffier, unpolished look. Because of their hair and working-class demeanor--their managers cleaned up their image to sell them to the mainstream media.

The Beatles "clean-cut " look was the model for most of the bands at the time-this was the look needed to sell records, it was believed.

It was not until groups like the Doors came along that bands including the Beatles adopted a scruffier, more individualistic look.

This sixties look really does look dated now.

  • what a great time that was. . so full of hope and fun fun fun!! these guys were so uplifting .. and made us dance for sure!

  • why is the drummer standing?

  • @SisturnMoth There was and still are a number of drummers that play standing up. Its partially because it looks as though they are using a cocktail drum and partially the drummers back ground a friend of mine who was in the Drum corps in Band back in HS prefers to play standing at his shows. Simply for the fact that it is more comfortable for him.

  • I absolutely love them swaying at the same time.

  • Golden oldie at its finest.

  • Ah trumpet and Sax and some of the other instruments that can make a band stand out during that time. Spirit had unique sounds, Jethro Tull and the flute, toss in some Sitar, Sax on 21st century schizoid man. Gosh so original. Love it

  • Bands became famous for their music; not their appearance.

The old saying in the entertainment business; "If you don't have talent, you've gotta have an act".

  • That really is a world class opening. I like the chorus too. But the rest of the song just doens't cut it. Good, and close to being great

  • omg - someone is downing their looks?? What a JOKE! This is the era of many neighborhood boys forming their own bands (you'd hear music playing out of closed garages ALL the time!), singing their own songs.... it was AWESOME! No, this was not a "polished" time in the history of music,,, it was very Grass Roots. (Ok, no pun intended...LOL) So thankful for people submitting these videos to YouTube.... what a GREAT music era & so many great memories...

  • Epic bro stache.

  • These dudes are slick as hell, are you kidding me? Can you not

hear the chicks screaming? This is the shit, and I am not joking.

God I wish we were back in these times.

  • This song was written by Larry Weiss and Scott English. They also wrote "Hi Ho Silver Lining" which was a late 60's British hit for Jeff Beck. Weiss wrote "Evil Woman" which was recorded in an epic version by Spooky Tooth for their 1969 album Spooky Two. Glen Campbell's hit "Rhinestone Cowboy" was another well-known Weiss composition.

  • @V301H Scott English?? lol what a name

  • I remember hearing this on AM radio when it was a hit. My Mom bought the 45.

  • Yea, don't jam on their looks. This and Green Light are tow of my favorite songs...and these are about half a century old. This is great-cool footage too! Drummer blowing a horn? That is out there.

  • @larrydh57 He wasn't really playing that trumpet, he wasn't even hitting his drums!!!

  • @ jahnsart

Britney spears being the exception of today....No looks AND no talent

  • black dudes having sex with his base...lol

  • remindes me of driving around in my 69 Chevelle lookin for squirrel to run

  • Who is playing the horns? LOLOLOLOL!

  • I think their appearance is very tasteful and appropriate for the times...It's today's groups who are grubby and shabby and could take a lesson from THESE guys and other groups of the times...

  • what a great mustaches!!!!!!

  • Their looks were not bad at all; besides we are here for the music. Enjoy it!

  • this look is 10 times better than any rap look....and the song is great. the only thing goofy are the guitars? not a fender or gibson...

  • Comment removed

  • Oh gary is still hot!!!!!

  • agreed Jahnsart...no computers, no cell phones, shall I go on!!! lol

  • I Was blown away to find out this Band Later became Rufus,The backup Band for Chaka Khan.

  • This is Gumby and Pokey's favirote song.

  • Love the pawn shop guitars!

  • The American Breed was from Chicago?

  • @Freyja1133 Yes indeed, they were from Chicago. This song was a big hit in our neighborhood back about 68 or so.

  • is that Freddy Mercury on bass?

  • drummer Andre Fischer and keyboard player Kevin Murphy of the American Breed were members of Rufus.

  • @dgunboats Thanks for that tidbit, Dgunboats! I remember rufus as well! Didn't realize these two bands were related!

  • As someone who's life was defined by comtemporary music from 1958 until the early 70's, I'd say the looks of these guys were very typical of this time period. It's part of makes this era of music so much fun. Todays artists look like they just got a major coat of spray paint before the performance began. It certainly didn't sound like the young ladies in the audience were having any particular problem with their attire. :)

  • This was and is a fabulous song!!! People like these guys paved the way for the huge rock bands who came later - but the music was being laid down first....

  • Well that drummer wont have to worry about breaking his skins!

  • Roy Trenneman on drums!!! Pre - Reynholm Industries.

  • Everyone looked so innocent back in those days,

  • WHAT MAKE OF GUITARZ ARE THESE FREAKS PLAYING - BURNS?

  • @chuckwagen - LOOKS MORE LIKE K-MARTO

  • Their image was very important. They wanted to perform and they wanted teenagers to buy their music. Listen to the lyrics: Bend me, Shape me, anyway you want me. How do you suppose the teens of the era were going to convince their parents to let them buy the 45s or albums? Buy looking neat and presentable. The music is smooth and sweet. But the lyrics: "Everybody tells me I'm wrong to want you so badly." It's all in the marketing. Love em.

  • My first favorite song ever!

  • I love this song had it on a 45 the day it was on the radio, I also found out it was originally done by a garage band from New York a couple of years before this '68 gem by an obscure band called the "Models". Very different in presentation, no horns but an interesting take on a great feel gooder from yesteryear.

  • O contrabaixista fica com os dedos no mesmo lugar no braço do instrumento a musica inteira, que deve ser bem fácil de se tocar.

  • sounds like someone is being murdered on 1:18 lol

  • Great song from the great 60's!

  • doing this song in marching band at marian catholic high school.

  • Awesome!

  • Oh my goodness, I remember this song. Love this song...Thank you for posting...

  • thanks a big smile on my face

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, that looked... cheesy.

  • @journeythruthepast - yeah the visuals are unsophisticated compared to today from the choreography to the corny background artwork. But the vocals were actually pretty good. Disappointed to learn from this vid that the horns are not actually part of the group, like the Buckinghams, even though they add kind of a distinctive pre-Chicago trumpet sound.

  • wonder what kinds of guitars those might be,.

  • Boy, did this band ever change when they hired Chaka Khan as their lead singer and became Rufus...

  • @BobWXXI I know, right lol! I just found out this band eventually became Rufus featuring Chaka Khan after numerous personnel change ups.

  • Tommy Roe also used "war drum" intros for at least two of his songs.

  • It is such a shame to hear the comments about their looks...The groups back then weren't as polished and geared towards television...Their looks were just part of the times and the record executives ideas...Today it is all about looks, as if the looks dictate talent...So, if you don't like how the look, close your eyes and listen.

  • @Jahnsart Exactly. Today, talent means nothing. Can't sing? No problem! We'll fix that right up with autotune. Just as long as you're skinny and pretty, we can sell it!

  • @Jahnsart Huh? I was a kid then and I thought they were so cute and I still think they are adorable. I love Mod times.

  • @Jahnsart Absolutely, back then it was about their sound. There is no way Janis Joplin, Mama Cass, Simon and Garfunkel and many others would ever get recorded nowadays.

As the first music video ever played on MTV by The Buggles, "Video Killed The Radio Star." Many times back then we had no idea what the artist looked like for many bands, as the albums often did not even have photographs of the artists on those big 12-inch disc album covers.

  • @BobbyR454 I'm afraid I didn't realize it at the time... but video really did kill the radio star...to all our great loss! I sure miss the music of the '60s-'70s-'80s...there's little left anywhere like it nowadays...so sad. I miss the era, as well, and feel sorry for the young people of today who missed it, and probably never will understand. I'm so grateful we got to experience those great times and the Renaissance Music it Truly Was! --Blessed 'Be!

  • @ThatMiserableCat young people aren't missing the good music era - i'm 17 and i much prefer this kind of music to anything modern

  • @Jahnsart i agree....JB and RB both sound like shit but dont look too bad lol. This band dosent look as good as them but sounds so much better, btw i'm 15

  • @Jahnsart hell yeah right on

  • @Jahnsart I happen to think that their looks are just fine. Geez, take a look at other bands of the '60's. The Rolling Stones were absolutely ugly. The Kinks were also ugly. CCR was ugly. But guess what. They were all damn good and that's all that matters!

  • @Jahnsart people are hating on their looks? damn, and i was thinking that they were super cute... i'm 19 btw. but seriously, they're looks fit their time era, so it doesn't really make any sense for people to bash their appearance; theres nothing wrong with them at all.

  • whatever they totally had a stylist for this shoot!

  • @Jahnsart Talent trumped looks in those days. And the world was better for it.

  • @Jahnsart I thought their looks were fine nearly 50 years ago, and I still do :)

  • Fantastic Sound. a Classic. What about 123 Red light by the 1910 Fruitgum co.. Talking heads covered it but have never found that. 60s maan, wow

  • tats my step moms dad soooooooooooo i gezzzzzzzz hes my grandpa

  • Age of sex, drugs and rock n roll !

  • The girls had to have adored these fellows, young women.

  • I am a dutch teenager and i like this very old song, is this a bad thing?

  • @JFKBleeker No way! It's good that you like this song!

  • wow, these guys were dorks.

    Great music though.

  • I went to High School [Lindbloom] with Gary the lead singer, he was very approachable , not the typical "hard guy" southsider. the first time I heard them they were playing at a K-mart, no kidding, on the south side were we all grew up. I had my own basement band at the time, what great memories. I was already in the Army when this came out in 66'

  • @audioworkshop1 LIndbloom...no shit! I went to Gage Park...wow

  • Do you have the song Hunky Funky? My favorite song by the American Breed!

  • You know it Baby! ..

  • The best 2 years of my entire life were 1967 and 1968. Perhaps this song was first released in 1966 (?) but it takes me back to so many parties that they all just blurr together. People, even today, give me a bad time for feeling that the best years of my life were so long ago but, honestly, I wouldn't trade a heartbeat of those two years for all the future you could serve up. Of course, sadly, I was drafted in Feb 1969 and went off to Vietnam and things were never quite the same again.

  • @MrRonnieG I enlisted in 66, and of course, like you, things were never the same since....BUT bro we survived to talk about it. These old songs keep my memories fresh...some great, some not so much...

  • @MrRonnieG if they were there, then they would know. those years in the '60s were so magical, mysterious, special; hell, i was only 10 in '66 but i still remember all that music! the beach boys "good vibrations" was popular, and the hollies, "bus stop" , just to name a few. so, i know what you mean, and if '66 wasn't the best yr. then 'it was '68 and 9! not just the music, but the cars, the times, us landing on the moon etc! as far as i'm concerned, sure we have had fun, but nothing compairs ...

  • Gf drummer not even getting anywhere near the drum ;)

  • I love the full stage freeze. very adventurous

  • These dudes look square, man

  • Love The Drummer with The Flute lol

  • timeless tune. 60's were the greatest decade for music period.

  • @rjplamf61 Amen brother from another old guy!!

  • Great porn-stache on the bass player

  • @pillroller88 That comment shows where your mind is

  • i'm digging that the drummer isn't hitting the drums and there are no microphones and the guitars aren't plugged into anything... my parents raised me on this stuff and if they've done anything right, that was it... how i wish i had been born in '53 and been 17 in '70 rather than born in '93 and 17 in freaking 2010

  • @isoscelespopsicle Sound like you're doing ok, kid. Your parents made sure that your head turned out fine.

  • I still remember the words!!!

  • I lived the 60's too. Great generation for music, in my opinion the only music I like.

    mater8502ial

  • I love it........one of the many songs to the soundtrack of my life!!!!

  • has anyone else whose watched this has noticed a striking resemblence of the lead singer to Davy Jones (Monkees)Could have been his separated at birth twin brother. remember this being a minor hit in the UK, but the Amen Corner version was by far the most successful Although a much slower version, Its one of those songs that grows on you - the more you hear it

  • Wow, look closely, the drummer almost hit the drums twice during this lip sycnc or should I say stick sync. Great song anyway, I lived the 60's

  • what a cute singer.

  • No doubt their enthusiasm contributed to making their version of this song the biggest success of all.

  • Me too. Wish I'd managed to keep it, they're nearly impossible to find these days.\

  • One thing that was unusual about this group is that they were integrated.

  • A few times there the drummer came within 6" of actually hitting the drums. Great song though, lip syncing or not.

  • @125jlm hahaha

  • The lead singer Gary Loiso) was my Instrument Flight Instructor back at Lansing Illinois airport (3 Hotel Alpha)in 1990.He owned Pumpkin studios on the South Side of Chicago and had gotten Styx their start.

  • @afar1 bastard ! Styx? I'll never forgive him!

  • i love how they sway back and forth ha this is my song

  • The Bassist looks like he might be Geraldo Rivera.

  • @Krangypoo he looked like Freddie Mercury to me LOL

  • @freedomchild68 yea him too.

  • @freedomchild68 Its Ron Jeremy

  • @HurricaneRhonda I wish that people would post the show (if they know) on this kind of video. It would be cool to know.

  • Filming restrictions prohibited everyone from showing up. Case in point was Frank Zappa's The Mothers of Invention. You never knew how many would show up. And as for the stack of 45s on the spindle, that destroyed more records than you could even guess at. We learned to play them one at a time after that.

  • And the version that made all the money!! Classic Sixties American Pop

  • amazing drumming, and as for the trumpet-were they all on lsd or just the drummer and programme producer.

  • This Song Is Fresh From Over Here

  • This song is so catchy. Love it!

  • Shizz, dude isn't even hitting the drums :P

    This shizzle-fo-dizzle is wack yo!

  • Thanks for posting this. Memories! What a cool song. This was one song that stopped everyone in their tracks. Hands went up, shoes flew off & fannies & other body parts started shakin'. Even if you weren't cool, this song made you feel cool. Oh yea! Elaine Benis isn't the only bad dancer in the world, but please laugh low when you watch me.

  • How can the screaming girls in the backround not see that they are completly faking this?

  • @ahaahaWALRUS i don't think they really care

  • can someone please tell me why im not seeing the same instruments as i am hearing?

  • Freddie Mercury rocking the bass!

  • the guy on the left had an epic moustache.

  • 2/02/2011 to HONDOTOO I think the guitars are the ARIA brand, if I'm not mistaken. The guitarist with the light color guitar that is shaped like a ES335 is another brand. What make and model do u play? Crank it up, and enjoy 60's vids forever.

  • great song from the 60s, I played it to death and still have the 45rpm...but bad lip, guitar and drum synching !

  • holy crap...the drummer is not even playing the drums....what???

  • @bighairbandgirl Lol! Who cares!! The music is great!! :-))

  • @bighairbandgirl , LOL, neither are the 3 guitarists~

  • @OurHumbleLife

LOL er, the guitarists wouldn't be playing the drums, would they????

  • @wisbechflyer ,HAAAHAAAA!!!!!!! LOL!!

  • Those were the best years to be a teenager. It's fun to see how young and cute these boys are...and remember that they were older than we were!! I love a blast from the past!

  • ... cool guitars !... what make are they ?

  • why do they have this drummer here?

  • I do like this song. But I like how Garbage took this chorus and make it kinky.

  • Great song from a great short-lived band from Chicago!

Members of "The American Breed" would go on to form the r & b/soul group "Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan)".

  • The lead singer is cute.

  • Takes me back to the year I graduated from high school.

  • @moc041 I am a couple of years earlier when these guys were still getting it together in Chicago. Proviso East HS, Maywood, IL, 1964. It was a special time. Fine music. I am anticipating the HS class reunion!!

  • OH YEEEAAAH.

  • This song came out I was a little kid and me or one my friends had the 45. We would jump around and sing and do the hand claps. And then we would play another 10 songs just as good until it was time to go home. I had a portable record player and you could stack the records to play one after the other. That was so cool.

  • @japinvt Simpler, happy times. Reminds me of my friends and me.

  • @japinvt Are you a DJ today? Should've followed your calling.

  • @japinvt Yeah it's amazing the way kids will take to certain tunes, some times young kids have good taste!

  • @japinvt I was a youngin too when this song came out and always liked it, but I never seen the band play until now…the Internet! I remember stacking the 45’s…lol

  • @FullMoonVideo If I had seen them I would have thought they were like my parents age-maybe they were!-could that be possible?

  • @japinvt i remember exactly what you are talking about! well in 1966 we happened to be living in japan, and so we had a sony reel to reel tape recorder. now, i was only 10yrs. old but i loved the music so much, i stayed up all night long just to tape the top 100 countdown of 1966, and baby it was worth it. how could there have been this much great music through out the '60s??? hell don't ask me, maybe it was devine intervintion?
