US fleet, 10 o'clock. 1 carrier, 1 heavy cruiser, many others. Direction 300, speed 24 knots. Prepare for assault formation. They're headed for Hornet. Go up to 6000 meters, cover Hornet. Copy that. "Task force 17 flagship Hornet" Prepare to engage. Direction 340, range 17 miles. This is the 2nd company, covering from the east. All units, attack. Entrerprise's fighters have arrived the scene. Shit, she's been damaged already. 3 o'clock low, torpedo bombers. Got it.
The ship is clearly a Yorktown class, which also had a large stack. It wasn't as large as that on the Lexingtons, but was big enough. If still in doubt, examine the bow. Hornet was a Yorktown class, which had an open bow. The Lexingtons had an enclosed bow- the forerunner of the hurricane bow seen on modified Essex class CVs.
Ok I get it, the creator of this movie showed the USS Hornet as a Lexington class carrier rather then as a Yorktown class carrier. The large distinct smoke stack is a signature of the Lexington class carrier at 5:42.
This is a intense fight of heavy weight boxers. We lost but did our best. This is worthy of a praise. Even now Japan is a only county that sank us carriers.
@no1kiyoko Well Germany never really had a chance to do so since all the US Carriers were in the Pacific. Also I am confused is that the there were only two of the Lexington class carriers. The only one lost was in May 1942 the other, the Saratoga survived the war. I wonder if they mean the battle of the Coral Sea that was before Midway.
@no1kiyoko Very well true. Although Japan lost WWII, they fought long and hard for there country; a devotion that not many Americans or Germans had. I might be American, but I truly agree that Japanese soldiers were some of the best soldiers ever.
Everyone..I don't care where you are from you gotta admitt..WW2 pilots had balls..to fly though enemy fighters then fly directly in concentrated Anti-aircraft fire like that in a propeller plane to drop only ONE bomb or torpedo!!! Not a jet.... a friggin prop plane..with max speed around 300mph or so and if you fail, or your home ie aircraft carrier is sunk, or if you are shot down, plane is broken, or your lost there is nothing around you except the cold ass deep ocean...tough ass generation
The USN had radio proximity fuses in their AAA for this battle for the first time. A huge advantage that is rarely mentioned. I wonder if they mention it in the narration.
Sivuch7- DON'T BE SORRY. This by far the most historically accurate and graphically detailed video I've ever seen. And it covers a period that is too little appreciated in the States. These three parts are 1st Class work, and the accuracy "brings to life" the events of Santa Cruz . I understand that this is a documentary from Japan. Is there any chance that you can post more videos such as these? ANY that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!
What'd they use to animate this?

6 o'clock high, bandits.
US carrier, 18 knots.
She's on fire.
Let her sink.
No joy, we're going to collide.

The 1st wave from the task force made it to where the US fleet was expected to be and found them down below.
However, there were enemy fighters to guard the fleet, waiting for them.
Enterprise to fleet guards.
We got many enemies incoming, head for 11 o'clock to this ship.
Your location invisible.
Let us know the direction of enemies instead.
Head for the direction of Enterprise's bow.
You're out of sight, I told ya.
Toward the west.

Play Ryuichi Sakamotos "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" when you look at this one, and turn the combat sound off ...gives it a new nice dimension :)

with out a doubt THE best historical re creation of a battle on the net
This should be shown to all the kids of today.
If only some of the other battles - Midway, Leyte gulf, coral sea, and even savo island were done like this.

When you stop at 6:15, the picture you get, is exactly the same like the original picture, which was taken in the october 1942
