Love the song. Saw him about a dozen times. Harry and his band are great in this.
As a professional in live performances, it looks like the spotlight operator was a little sloppy trying to cleanly switch hitting each musician. I was able to do that within the first week at my old job.
Harry was great I was very lucky to get to see him four times in Kansas City. The first time was mid 70's at the Cowtown Ballroom. It was a very good show.I miss seeing him, I think the world would have been better had he lived.
I hace some old records and listen to them often it bring's back a good time in my life.
Anyone notice this his live recordings are far, far superior to his studio work? He just kicked into another gear when he played in front of people, something he just couldn't duplicate in a studio. Kind of like the Beatles in reverse.
I agree! But I don't think it was entirely his fault--I don't think he had TOO too much trouble in the studio, it's just that a lot of his studio tracks are a bit overproduced : /
I think it was more than that. Harry was all about personality and passion and I think it was hard for him to show these things in a studio as opposed to playing in front of people. You're right though, it was all good. RIP Harry, we will always miss you.
this is the definitive version of 6 string orchestra. it makes you sing out loud along with it. makes me want to hook my computer to my 400 watt home stereo system, just to sing along and enjoy!
The Chapin family are still doing shows that keep this music alive. The shows usually consist of Tom, Steve, Big John Wallace and the children of Tom, Harry and Steve. The shows are awesome. You can find the schedule at Tom Chapin's web site.
I like how he mocks the beginner guitar player in the song, playing intentionally crudely and simplistically in certain parts for emphasis.
He even plays out of sync during those comedic parts but stays in time with the song. It's hard enough to sing and play at the same time, but to intentionally throw yourself off in the middle of the song is pure genius!
He was taken from this world too damn soon, god damn, I miss that guy.
I was fortunate enough to see Harry twice. I was sixteen the firs time and had front row center seat. He was no more than six feet away from me. Miss him sadly.
And there's a lot to nitpick in that number alone. For one thing, during the scenes where Scooter is in his bedroom playing, there's an autographed picture of that episode's guest star, Mark Hamill. And also, Dr. Teeth is not in the number with the rest of the band, so I think Jim Henson was performing Janice for that song only.
You know how I feel about Harry

Yes, I know the sloppiness is intentional. I just said that because of the time period--you know, the 70s!

Is that a bad thing??

Listen to his playing on other songs. You could play that good in your dreams.

Cheers.
