Regardless of how forceful the suggestion was, it's not any of his business. America already gets enough criticism for trying to police the world; I hardly think that getting involved in little EU issues will help that image.

The financial fallout that we're still seeing today was caused by the "Community Reinvestment Act", sponsored by Democrats (particularly Barney Frank). This act made it easier for people to get loans to buy houses, even if they couldn't afford them. Bush tried multiple times to fix it, but democrats succeeded in pushing this forward. This disaster lies solely at the feet of the democrats, and Obama continues it.
