Samara's story is not sad at all because american version of the ring sucks. Sadeko, Samara's japanese counterpart, has a more sad story. if you watched Ringu: Birthday, which tells the story of Sadeko before the event of Ringu 1, she was once a beautiful girl that stars in a play, and she loved someone, but in the end, her father has to brutally beat her and throw her in the well. The most sad part is, in Ringu 2, we know that Sadeko had been ALIVE in that dark well for 30 years!!

The Ring just has a better story, better endings, and is more scary, the grudge on the other hand is just not scary at all and all the ending are crappy of all three movies. BTW what all lot of people seem to not know is that there is a sequel to the first ring, so yes there is a ring two that leads off of the first one.
