  • greeny are you here?????

  • nice video man!

  • Love the Pech Merle painting - I saw that this summer in the flesh!

  • A gratuitously racist comment from TheLifeDegenerator was removed. TheLifeDegenerator, you're welcome to post here, and the subject of race is not off limits if it is in the context of scientific discussion.

  • That's one weird looking human at 4:00. Oh wait, it's you!

  • To put it bluntly...potholer54 makes some of the best, if not the best, videos on YouTube! Thanks for the work you do!!

  • I think you meant to add this video to your Made Easy (for schools) playlist, but you added the carbon dating one instead.

    great videos by the way

  • Funny that science is seen by some as hard, cold, devoid of meaning...I can't imagine why. This is a far grander, insightful, touching and moving than anything in a 2000 year old book!

  • @EvilEuropean a 2000 year old book that has been "re-translated" literally over 100 different ways.

  • 0:30 — Obama?

  • @Tsicar LMAO

  • @raptors11111 Truefax.

  • @raptors11111 Yes, and so are all "white people" or members of any "race"..you, me, everybody.. by the way..it's nice that you know this, you wouldn't believe how many ignorants there are in America and The Middle East who don't even know that humans are apes! Seriously, they don't even know that basic fact! : )

  • Did you skip 8 or something I cant find it

  • Cheeeeeeky..... 4mins. *tips hat*

  • That guy at 8:56 looks familiar.

    DJ

  • @djarm67 - Heh, spotted too, though I thought 4mins?

  • what is that song at the start

  • well i see one comment about caucasian to negroid but not mongoloid and very different traits from each...leaving me to believe that there was more than one "dead-end" ape chain that may have made it through. I also see that you site "civilized" man well after 8000 BC. I would like to pose the question of "in your research what is the earliest indication of "civilized" man? (ie. government, laws, written language...) and compared to the oldest works of art and modern man that you site.

  • Video was really informative and interesting! You should do voices for National Geographic :]

  • This video was great. I like how it touched on the vitamin-D and skin color traits. I have been trying to explain that to people for a long time and they still reject it.

  • In 1997 a DNA sample was taken from Cheddar Man, and it was found that he was indeed made of cheese.

  • 5 stars of David I liked this very much!

It just goes to show we are closer then we think in origin!

I read in another genetic book that we are all @ least 50th cousins.

This just goes to show the truth of The Adam and Eve story in the Bible!

May LORD be with all who understand the meaning of this messege!

  • @jesuskopp ur a cock gurgler

  • Nope, been married to the same "women"

    for the last 14 yrs!

    Study!!!

  • then ur wife must have a cock. do u like that logical conclusion

  • Do you understand that you are a very angry person?

Do you know where that anger comes from?

  • im not angry im just messing with u, excuse my rude and vulgar mannerism.

  • Hey- you may have some class after all!

Yes, I excuse/forgive your "rude & vulgar mannerism."

Do u realize that I have been forgiven for many such trangressions?

  • yep.. genetics prove without a doubt that an invisible guy intentionally set two nudists up for ultimate failure by lying to them and making a talking snake tell the truth and then punishing them and us, their ancestors, for listening to something else than his own bullshitting :]

  • 1st off whats wrong w/being naked, don't you wish we could do that now without shame?

This was not a setup, it was freedom, and this freedom is still being expressed, are you not expressing it right now?

People now days believe in everything from pet Psychics to horse whisperers, but they can't seem to understand the talking snake even if it is the embodiment of satan, wonder why? God = Truth / Satan = Lie! You still have the same choice of freedom and forgivness as they did!

    No bull!!!!!!!

  • whats wrong with being naked: its minus 9 degrees at the moment...

freedom? freedom implies a choice.. according to biblical theology i have no choice, no freedom to chose wether to have the knowledge of good and evil since Adam and Eve chose that for all mankind ; way to go freedom?

As far as the biblical creation story goes, god is the one who's lying, and the snake is actually telling the truth about the apple and what happens when it gets devoured.

  • minus 9 degrees yes I can see why that would make you be ashamed of being naked : )

You have the freedom to choose forgiveness

  • You're wired wrong if you dont comprehend the difference between freezing your ass off and being ashamed... nudity is only shameful because we in society deem it to be, which as you know isn't the case everywhere ;)

  • O.k. sorry you didn't get the joke : (

  • You also have a choice of choosing whether you will trust God for what is "Good & Evil" or you can choose for yourself!

Its really up to you, you know.

I am not sure you have read the "Biblical creation story ", because there is no apple in it!

Please read it and get back with me.

  • I have read it, and it makes no difference wether the 'fruit of knowledge of good and evil' is an apple or a banana.. its edible!

if god was all-powerful and all-good and all for freedom of choice, each individual human ever born would START in a garden of eden, with the very same 'temptation' of the talking snake and the forbidden fruit and the lies about dying when eating it... since that's not the case, its quite easy to call it a fairytale myth that this god even exists in the first place

  • Does the Bible say its edible?

Are you now going against science?

Did this video not state that we all came from a couple? It it true that we inheret traits from our parents? Look you can still choose, it is up to you?

You can trust God for what is right & wrong. -OR-

You can make up for yourself what you think is right and Wrong?

  • Really.. why would you contest that the fruit it says in the book she ate is edible?

Other than being five years old, quite mentally challenged, or purposefully attempting to mislead the course of a conversation... why?

There are more than the two choices you present - i can also chose to trust that the law is able to distinguish right from wrong for me and simply obey the law

Would you lie intentionally in ANY situation, knowing that your god forbids it?

  • Where do think the Law of our Land comes from?

I have not lied to you.

if you think I have show me.

  • I didn't imply that you have lied to me.. i was merely asking you.. would you lie, ever, knowing full well that that was what you were doing, and with a purpose to doing so, whilst knowing that you are forbidden to by the god you worship?

The law is decided by a demographic representation of the population of the country - or at least here in Denmark we elect government officials, 115 of them, from all diferent political parties and regions, and they agree on passing or removing laws.

  • If I tell you I would never lie, or have never lied, I would be telling a lie, so I will say that I have and would!

    Yes,

  • What if i then ask you if your god would lie?

  • I would say "he" does not lie, and ask you to prove it!

  • So your god would not lie even to save lives?

If you lived in germany during ww2 you would probably lie about hiding jews in your attic to save their lives... god is a ripe bastard, he'd give them right up just so his precious anti-lying stance wouldn't seem childish and flexible?

  • The basic laws never change wheather it be there in Denmark or here in the U.S.,do you know what basic laws I am talking about?

  • there are many laws, but none of them are basic - nearly all laws have exceptions to them ; take murder as an example.. murder is illegal, however when countries go to war this is set aside in regards to enemy soldiers.

  • Do you understand the differance between protection and killing? (murder)

  • protection has nothing to do with it ; the example i gave you is that when a country goes to war, in aggression, then that country's laws against murder do not apply to its soldiers since they are supposed to kill, they are trained to and commanded to, and not for reasons of protection - protection is in the defensive side of a struggle, and then killing is mostly also acceptable if its unavoidable!

  • O I C, you do understand the differance.

You have answered your own question, and I could not said it better.

The differance is "if" it is "unavoidable" or not.

    Very Good to you.

  • I didn't ask you any questions pertaining the avoidability or unavoidability of murder.. you're really making it hard to keep track of this conversation by constantly trying to pretend you're 'on top' or 'in charge'.. please don't be as smug, try to just present your points and dont conclude anything before agreement is reached by both discussing parties.. this kind of tactician talk really gets a lot of people angry y'know ;)

  • O.K. then would you agree that most murders are avoidable b/c they are decided beforehand?

Some murders happen in the heat of the moment b/c a person lets his or her anger overcome their thinking, would agree with this?

War is differant, do we stand by and allow someone to take our land and enslave us or do fight for it?

    Is freedom worth fighting for?

  • Why wouldn't i agree that there is a difference between premeditated murder and manslaughter? its in the definition of the words that there is a difference!

Of course freedom is worth fighting for, and of course nations should defend themselves from aggressors.. please, try to make a point or an argument, i'm not going to just sit around and agree on terminology when you clearly have an alterior motive associated with doing so..

  • So you are saying we agree then?

  • *sigh*

on the terminologies we agree.. bring on your point already, if you have any..

otherwise i'm going to ignore you, this is simply a waste of my time.. i could be watching frozen grass waiting to thaw so it can grow ; which is likely to be more entertaining sadly :\

  • Nice talking with you then : )

  • I recall a documentary where a forensic artist had made a "reconstruction" of the face of "Cheddar man". When they unveiled it at a meeting of the villagers somebody immediately "recognised" him!

  • potholer54

can DNA testing determine ethnic groups ?

    Hispanic,asian, jewish etc.

  • it can be done approximately, and not for all ethnic origins. For example hispanic and jewish will be harder to determine, due to their similarity and origin of many hispanics from maranos jews. but mostly yes - it can be done to determine whether you are japanese or english quite easily. Every ethnic origin has typical genetic markers, while in some cases they are very similar (english vs french) in others they are quite different (arabs vs russians)

  • thanks

i heard they isolated a "cohen gene" .

to many (theists) this is seen as something more than just selective breeding with in a limited pool.

its nothing to be Arrogant or boastful about.

  • not exactly - "cohen gene", which has frequency of 80-90% among jewish cohens (only 10% among non-cohen jews) actually has almost identical version among palestinians, iraqis and kurds. we know jewish origin is from Northern Mesopotamian kurds, who have this "cohen marker", and for palestinians - some of them are islimized jews or perhaps kurds.

  • i see.....

also most "jews" are self described as being of hebrew heritage.

it becomes vague and obscure over time.its a mindset or culture.

BTW: i'm an atheist of Hebrew heritage.live 10 yrs in israel. :)

  • may i correct you - "jews" or "judeans" is ethnicity (Judah tribe). Hebrew comes from "Habirru" - wanderers in Akkadian, relating to period before first temple, when Israelites were not living in permanent villages. so you are judean atheist.

  • yes.i know :)

they are generic terms people throw around ,hebrew, jewish.

have you heard of the "shomronim" living in shcem

they believe they are the true jews.............

it all becomes very childish and tedious.

who wouldn't want to be the creator of the universe's special nation ?

  • you are wrong again - shomronim do not believe they are Judah tribe. They believe they are Israelites, and it is very possible according to genetic tests. Shomronim are traditionally from tribe of Yosef, mixed with Kutim from mesopotamia.

  • sorry correction :(

Samaritans refer to themselves as Bene Yisrael.

  • I just checked in the article "Reconstruction of Patrilineages and Matrilineages of Samaritans and Other Israeli Populations From Y-Chromosome and Mitochondrial DNA Sequence

Variation" by Oefner, and i can tell you that while all male jewish communities belong to a single cluster, male Samaritans slightly differ, being closest to Yemenite jews. Female samaritans are definately non-israelite, but surely belong to Mesopotamian population.

  • yes, there are surely some connections.

the question is: whats all the fuss about Semitic genealogy ?

seems to be driven by other agenda's (religious.nationalistic etc.)

one of the aims of the "new atheism" is to discard all dogma and tribalism.

buy as you've pointed out ,if you go back far enough they all share common heritage.

but why are people dwelling on this.isn't time to move on ?

  • it is human nature to seek identity, this is why people seek roots and origins. without our past we have no future say some, disgard all dogma and tribalism say others like you. none is "right" and both shall keep their dogma.

one more thing - today "Semitic" is linguistical definition with little having to do with geneology. Most semitic speakers today do not have any blood connection to biblical "Shemic" tribes of Elam, Arpaxad, Assur, Lud and Aram.

  • if you find signs of atheist dogma tell us about it ,there is nothing to keep.

have you read any noam chomsky .jared diamond

    i recommend it

  • noam chomsly is a complete outcast and persona non-grata in my country. why in the world should i read him ?

  • barry sacharov's mashiach lo ba was a hit last time i was there :)

  • it was 1990s

  • mashiach lo ba is by the way shalom chanoch's song

  • Much better quality, but a movie of this length shouldn't need to be 400MB. Perhaps try compressing the audio to 129kbps MP3 first, and the video with a Divx codec.

  • ok..... so everyone migrated from one original area from apes. They slowly branched off and spread across the globe......evolved further at each part of the globe then conquered the world over again? wow so many questions ive should of payed more attention in middle school:-/ and what of the bible? what do scientist say of all the scientific proof of the bible and noah n such?

  • there is no scientific proof supporting any parts of the bible. there is vast amounts of evidence that proves noah's flood never happened.

  • google scientific proofs of the bible.... all of this is confusing. Science sometimes supports but ultimately contradicts the bible....

  • the bible is a story book, none of its claims have scientific support. kind of like how science doesn't support the existence of harry potter or wizard schools.

  • the genetic paths and migrations to which potholer is referring come well after our evolution into homo sapien sapiens

  • ok, so if it comes after our evolution into homo sapiens then why isnt any of this recorded in history books/scribes?

  • Mitochondrial DNA and fossil evidence indicates that modern humans evolved in east Africa about 200,000 years ago. This is when the first homo sapiens evolved and from there they spread out, well before written history, as we know it, existed.

  • It took us a long time to learn how to write, its not an innate human trait. Its part of modern culture, culture gets passed down and builds on itself. Humans evolved in africa, but we didn't leave africa until about 60,000 years ago. When people populated the rest of the world those groups acquired some adaptations to the new environments, pale skin due to a lack of UV radiation in high latitudes for example.

  • their-is-non,-the-bible-is-a-story.

  • You make alot of claims and I dont doubt that. But Im interested in the source of your claims, from which site/book did u get this information?

  • That is one scary-looking bushman

  • can you please tell me the name of the song at the end?

  • great video. i think you should make one about languages and european tribes, how the nations were built, how borders and maps were drawn.

  • The ending gave me goose bumps. Brilliant!

  • why do populations that stay put and don't migrate have alot more of the genetic markers?

  • =why do populations that stay put and don't migrate have alot more of the genetic markers? =

To be more accurate, they have a greater diversity of markers. When a small group migrates, their descendants would be closely related, so the same markers get passed around. Africans who stayed behind had a larger gene pool to mix with.

  • potholer54 I've just watched a program by the wonderful Dr Alice Roberts. She said that all humans outside Africa are descended from one single migration that went over the red sea and round the coast of Yemen, rather than the multiple migrations you describe. Is this as a result of some new evidence or is it a rival theory to yours?

  • =...humans outside Africa are descended from one single migration.=

Just to clarify, the research isnt mine, but that of Spencer Wells. And from what I understand of the program you mention, Alice Roberts hasnt done any research either; this idea comes from South African geneticist Raj Ramesar. I dont know the basis of his claim of single migration, so I cant say how well supported it is by evidence. I found several papers by him on genetic illnesses, but nothing on human migration.

  • Great video!

  • How did aboriginals get to Ausland?

    Or did they evolve there...

  • =How did aboriginals get to Ausland?=

Aborigines were among the first wave, marked by the M130 mutation, that migrated across south Asia. At the time sea levels were lower, so Indonesia was joined to Asia, and separated from Australia by a narrow waterway. Aborigines crossed by boat, perhaps blown off course during coastal fishing trips.

  • Oh, i see.

I thought it could be by boat, but i didn't take into equation the continental drift.

    Thanks.

  • How come that Caucasians don't have M130 markers? Without this marker, how does this prove that Caucasians are descendants of Negroids?

How can Negroids be the most genetically diverse people when they all have the same hair and eye color only with differing shades of skin tone?

  • =How come that Caucasians don't have M130 markers?=

Because M130 markers are carried by people on the first migration route across South Asia. They did not come to Europe.

=how does this prove that Caucasians are descendants of Negroids?=

The M130 marker says nothing about Caucasians. Other markers show the link of humankind to Africa.

  • =How can Negroids be the most genetically diverse people when they all have the same hair and eye color only with differing shades of skin tone?=

Hair color, skin color and other superficial differences tell us nothing about the extent of genetic differences. Two people can be very dissimilar and yet share remarkably similar genes. Two other can be very similar and yet have very different genes.

  • Comment removed

  • So then exactly what genes are different among Negroids that makes them "the most diverse peoples genetically"?

  • =So then exactly what genes are different among Negroids that makes them "the most diverse peoples genetically"? =

You'll have to look that up. I don't have a list.

  • So as a result of not listing any specific marker that links Cro-magnons or Caucasians to Negroids, how is this truth? How do I know this isn't just politically fashionable propaganda?

  • 1) It's what the data says, just because pot doesn't give you a list doesn't suddenly invalidate any of that

    2) this would benifit who and why?

    3) even ancient mythologies say we're related.

    4) the evidence independant of the genetic evidence shows that we originated in africa, the genetic evidence was done relatively recently to current discendents and ironically coincides with the archeological evidence independently.

  • =So as a result of not listing any specific marker that links Cro-magnons or Caucasians to Negroids, how is this truth?=

Sorry, didn't see this, but garith21 answered it well. The science of genetics does not rely on me memorizing every single gene in the genome or we would all be in trouble. If you want to know which markers link Africans and Europeans, look it up in the study I cited.

  • "So then exactly what genes are different among Negroids that makes them "the most diverse peoples genetically"?"

They're essentially the where the great migrations started and we have genetic markers stemming from that parent population. This is either tracked via Y chromosomal DNA or mitochondrial DNA as dna is directly inherited unchanged with the exception of specific mutations that are inherited in further generations.

  • "How can Negroids be the most genetically diverse people when they all have the same hair and eye color only with differing shades of skin tone?"

Because people that moved away had less variety of who to mate with. African phenotypes may look similar to you, but their genotypes are very, very diverse. That is because they had a larger population to choose mates from.

  • It is especially because of such evidence that people say race doesn't exist. They see the different races as parts of one "continuum." I get the "We all come from Africa, thus we're all the same race!" line all the time!

  • So, according to the time line, people settle in Japan and Australia first before the settled in Europe?

  • =people settle in Japan and Australia first before the settled in Europe?=

In South Asia and Australia, certainly. I'd have to check Japan. The original inhabitants were Ainu, who still have their own language and culture.

  • Hmmm... according to data I've encountered, Asians and Europeans are considered close relatives, genetically speaking, because Asians descended from the Europeans as the migration moved eastward. But if South Asia was settled first, then I guess that data would only apply to Orientals and not Indians, even though the latter is also considered Asian.

  • Hmmm, what's the name of the song used in this video? I've heard it before, but I can't remember it.

  • =what's the name of the song used in this video?=

    Please see the video description

  • Fantastic

  • WE...ARE .... the SAN.

  • Why is this not available?

  • =Why is this not available? =

The series for schools is available on DVD, for free to schools that apply.

  • I want to buy a copy of this series (Adult or school version, whichever has more info in it).

I can't find a torrent with resources. Could you mail me a DVD?

  • Interesting!

  • This might be a stupid question.

But how do they trace "markers" "physically"?

I mean, do they take just some samples from people living now?

(I hope the you understand the question)

  • yes, that's how they do it. To get a broader persepective, rent the Spencer Wells' DVD (the journey of man), which is pretty interesting.

  • Dear Potholer54, please ignore the negative comments from the uneducated, and continue posting the latest on the origins of life, the pillars of creation, and

hopefully the Endogenous Retroviruses of Evolution as shown on NatGeo's [Explorer] 'Virus Hunters' on January 12, 13th, and 17th, of 2009, I beleive it's a show that tells me how Nature is the creator.

Keep up the noble work, there are those of us who are very open minded. Thank you, I am truly grateful.

  • 8:30 Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the Cheddar Gorge discovery was not of a "direct descendant" necessarily, as his cousins could harbor the same genes. As someone whose family worked the coal mines only a few miles away prior to immigration to the US, that discovery is quite special to me.

  • I have my doubts about this marker thing.

First of all, isn't it impossible for the same mutation to take place in different populations?

Second, what is the impact of migrations of small groups of people into larger but still small groups of other people? And of the intermixing of the two. Intermixing of people has taken place many many times, but it seems to me that this is not accounted for here.

    (cont.)

  • Finally, when I hear that something "fits perfectly" with something else, I grow skeptical. Does it really? In the natural world things don't fit perfectly, there is a creative impefection. If they fit too perfectly, something is wrong.

All this stuff is still very new. While I think it is correct in basis, I think there will be plenty more discoveries and revisions. I would urge caution.

  • "First of all, isn't it impossible for the same mutation to take place in different populations?"

    Possible, but incredibly unlikely.

That the exact same mutation would occur on the exact same base pair, longer odds than winning the lottery.

Chromasomes have a huge number of base pairs in them and mutations are entirely random.

  • lol 8:35 that's what we call progress!! xD

  • Don't trust potholer54, he's a KhoiSan supremacist. KhoiSan like escimo don't have B and AB blood types. AB blood type can be found only in humans.

  • 8:12 - 8:56 is the most inspiring thing i have ever heard :)

  • Brilliant!

  • *co-incidently* <- *slightly hitting creationists...* xD

  • Sublime

  • Wonderful.

  • Very professionally done. Congratulations.

  • love it 5 stars

  • Fucking great!!!! Thank You

  • I dunno.......maybe the DNA sample was contaminated? I mean families live in certain towns for many generations.....but 9,000 years?? That is a bit hard to swallow.

  • what a good video. i knew some of it but it was cool too se the migration rutes. im going to view all of your vids.. juhuu im geting soooo smart. oh btw five stars from me

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • Bravo.

  • that's awesome, I didn't know the story about the skeleton and the school teacher... pretty amazing..

  • very nice

  • well done as always ^_^

  • This video makes the concept of racism to be rather silly. We all came from the same group of people.

  • Hi WilkyMay609. I accidentally marked your comment as 'spam' (I thought I was giving it a thumbs up). I don't know how to undo this, so please accept my apologies.

  • Merci, personne ne m'ecoute!...pas de probleme...haha

    Tous les meilleurs :)

  • remember stupid people don't know they are stupid.

  • Yikes, that could include me!

  • Makes you think, how do we all know we're not stupid too......

  • Just a note, the San people are the most egalitarian society on Earth.

They are so egalitarian, that saying thank you will imply disrespect, because sharing is expected and not an exception

  • richi@

Aren't the San a fascinating people? Their language, culture, and appearance is so unlike their neighbors, the Bantu derived peoples. I love to hear their language.

  • Excellent Video.

It's so humbling when you look at the big picture and realize that you are nothing more than a small link in the great chain.

  • hey potholer, just wondering if there is any explanation about tracing most recent common ancestors which relates to how the dna sequence changes with respect to changes in dna as a result of viral or other dna changes... i hope the question is clear... what i mean is, if the dna sequences is changing due to various mechanisms, then cant we have people with common ancestors but different dna? could we have missed a common ancestor this way?

  • tarose71@

I don't mean to answer for PH, but I'll tell you what I know.

Changes to DNA are the BASIS for comparison. Suppose we measure three bases that we know differ for some humans.

    #1 has A T C A

    #2 has A G C T

    #3 has T G C T

We would say that 1 and 2 are more distantly related, 2 and 3 are very closely related. If a virus or germline event occurs, it just creates a new marker. We prefer point mutants in unselected regions, because the rate of divergence is steady over time.

  • thanks, that cleared it up for me... i guess i was thinking about it the other way around, it didnt occur to me to look at it that way... i havent formally studied anything about this, but the way it all works is kinda fascinating :-)

  • Fascinating as always ;)

  • Awesome. Just found this one: gonna check out the other 8.

  • that was sweet...

  • Five stars......Great!!!

  • Great video! My suggestion is to have the Western Hemisphere in the maps on the right side so the Bering migration looks continuous.

  • Good job

  • this video took aaaaages to load.

  • @ seddfmyd (52 minutes ago)

    I experienced no download delay.

Remember the story of the Microsoft Tech Support guy at the shooting range. When told that he missed the target with every shot, he put his finger over the end of his pistol and pulled the trigger, blowing off the end of his finger. He said, "The bullets are coming out OK here. The problem must be at your end!"

  • I always liked this video, it is possibly the top one of the series and the musical score it is amazing.

I am guessing the "for schools" version will end with part 10, since part 11 of the original was a critique of Creationism.

  • =I am guessing the "for schools" version will end with part 10=

    That's correct,

  • fascinating!!

  • Thank you for working so hard on these videos.

  • Great Work Man!!

  • noodly blessing all around, go in peace and keep up the good work. RAmen.

  • So then none of the mitochondrial DNA is passed down through paternal lineage?

  • Practically none. Incidentallly it may happen but that is very rare.

  • Easily one of my favourite youtubers.

  • Pure gold. The ending is so nice.

  • The ending to this is so beautiful and powerful, I almost cried! Fortunately, I was also eating cornflakes which seem to have a mysterious, sobering effect.
