There are over 150 genetic strands of potato. Very few of the strands ever make it to mass production. McDonald's actually stopped Monsanto Co. from putting it's genetically produced potatoes into the nations french-fry stocks. When McDonald's refused to purchase them, Monsanto stopped growing them. :) I bet they still have patents on round-up-ready Potato genes though.

this year has made me realise how little i have done to acknowledge South America's contributions to my happiness.

One interesting fact is that all potatoes have a head and a tail. You can look at them and most often tell. The tail is actually tastier than the head. Bet you never knew that one. And now that I think about it, the bikini cut on the potato correctly had the potato oriented right side up. YUM!
