This is because of the Chemical Dispersent that they sprayed over the ocean and the shoreline. Called COREXIT, look it up. It contains mercury, arsenic and other deadly and toxic chemicals. People in the area were not warned and were not wearing proper safety gear while they were cleaning up the shoreline. They sprayed HUNDREDS OF GALLONS of it. It is not even helping the oil spill...it is covering it up. COREXIT use was a cover up, and the FDA and BP claimed that it was perfectly “safe”.
Usually when I spray a toxin anywhere I A.) ask what it consists of and B.( generally demand some kind of safety gear, if it's not provided I will bring my own. It amazes me that people were told to spray a chemical that they had absolutely no knowledge of and they though, "Hey! Sounds good to me!". If I can wiki it right now, being a kid with a laptop, then I'm sure they had the means to research it.
Cont: The only real nuisance was tar balls on the beach for a decade or more which meant cleaning your feet with kerosene after a long walk. Low income people are the ones most effected by this and many of them can not afford to live close enough to work/school/other necessities that they can travel without a car. When the world still had big ocean and coastal life numbers to play with, an oil spill could be recovered from more easily. Now, the losses are pretty crippling.

the workers are getting sick from not only the oil-related chemicals surrounding them but also from chemicals that were dropped over the spill in an attempt to control it. Oil contains volatile organic compounds like the carcinogen benzene, which can lead to damage to lung, kidney and liver functions.
