if you like to know more about weight loss surgery msg me. it's not an easy way out. but with the right doctor and facilities, it is possible to get your life back.
i'm usually not grossed out by anything, but i was eating gummi bears when i watched this... for some reason watching this video and eating gummi bears do not mix
Of course I can only speak for my country, but in this cases of extreme weight lost this kind of surgery falls under the category of "reconstructive surgery" which is covered by most insurances and by the national medical system. The same criteria is also applied, lets say, to women that had breast cancer.
You look like a new person! I'm so proud of you and I don't even know you :-) I too am trying to loose weight. My Dr. had told me that I need to drop at least 100lbs to be healthy and I'm proud to say that I went from 260 to my current weight of 225. I know it's not much but, it has been an up hill battle and it's not over yet. Thank you very much for being an inspiration for me and probably so many others out there -3
I respect this guy ,he took a leap in the right direction and sticked to it to reach his goals .That is also in my nature but many friends of mine aren't sticking to their plans if they find difficulties ,we are winners David .I was 118kg's (30kg's overweight) ,that is nothing compared to you but we delt with it before it was too late .Good going mate!
If you excercise your skin will shrink back to size. I have lost over 70 lbs when i get to my weight goal of 130 lbs I will post a video of me before and after. I used to weigh 330 my right weight is 200 because I am 6'2 and I have a lot of musle also.
gastric by pass is covered in canada if its being done on a person who needs it done for being obese and suffering from diabetes and or other related being over weight cond
If this was a presentation for a class, it deserved a grade of F. While it is difficult to get insurance to cover a procedure normally classified as cosmetic, the examples shown here would be approved with little to no difficulty...unless the referring surgeon was completely incompetent.
@TheDramaticsoul77 I think the Bariatric procedure was quite successful with david. Why are you so down on people making positive changes in there lives?
Did you not read @TheDramaticsoul77 's comment? That person is not upset with positive changes, they are upset because David did not have surgery, he did it via diet & exercise. The person that is making this video wants to show an example of what someone would look like and some people think this is the wrong example since he did not have the surgery that is the debate. I don't know why I keep stumbling upon this video
I am trying to get a loan at present for my excess skin to be removed as I had bariatric bypass op in 2008 it was best decision I made ever but getting funding on the NHS was sheer hell as I had togo to grt lengths to get funding such as go in my local press to being on BBC panorama prog. to justify our right to live yet still they lied of much it costed the NHS and put nothing of how it wld save thousands in the future it would cost the NHS nor state it is only op they get financial return on
MISLEADING!!! This video cannot be “an educational aid for healthcare professionals” simply because "he is a good example of what a person who lost that much weight would look like. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! There are thousands of cases where people have undergone gastric bypass without you’re using someone who didn’t! This is WORTHLESS! NO health professional would use this amateurish video anyway!
@drakeGTA you r a bloody liar u used the persons pic under the title bariatric surgery,i was really going to go for the surgery if i had not found out your fuckin lies .hats off to david for he has proved if weight can be gained it can be lost also.
@wenniewoop If your insurance covers it, there has to be a co-morbidity to go with the obesity. These would be heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Back problems do not qualify for these. I went through the process. Most insurances will require you to go onto a 6-month physician supervised diet. YOU MUST SHOW WEIGHTLOSS EVERY MONTH! This shows the insurance you're dedicated to losing the weight. I received my approval with no problem.
THE INFORMATION WAS VERY, VERY, ACCURATE (work in OR).
THE TITLE IS VERY, VERY, WRONG WITH DAVID SMITH'S PICTURES!!!
MAYBE HE WILL SUE YOU FOR FUTURE EARNINGS AS A NURSE FOR MAKING LOTS, AND LOTS, OF PEOPLE THINK THAT HE WAS CURED BY BARIATRIC SURGERY.
WHY NOT SIMPLY PUT IN THE INFORMATION BAR THAT THE PICTURES ARE FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES ONLY - - I THINK THAT WOULD SHOW THE MATURE THOUGHT PROCESS OF A NURSE!
@MeeAndChicken Easy for you to say. People gain weight for a multitude of reasons, physical, emotional, psychological ... you have no right to be pompous and judgmental ...
regardless of how he lost it wether it be from surgery or not. It saved his life im sure. We should praise him even more for not giving up and fighting through all of this.
Because insurance companies are cheap bastards and they would just as soon tell you you were still perfectly functional with 5 pounds of extra skin you'd have to tuck into your pants instead of do the right thing and cover it. I'm sure they'd say it was 100% cosmetic.
The man you have in the pictures is named David Smith. He did not have any type of bariatic surgery, he lost 400 pounds by diet and exercise. He was in the show 650 lb virgin. Please take this down, it is not accurate.

@ericaj58 Christ o' mighty. How many times do we have to go over this, we know the guy in the vid didn't lose his weight because of a gastric bypass, but he is a good example of what a person who lost that much weight would look like. This video was designed as an educational aid for healthcare professionals.
@DrakeGTA I am very, very, against using other peoples work without using a proper bibliography or works cited. Are you going to nursing school in a thrid world country? Just put a small note in the dang information bar. If you can't make a post-notation, how is a hospital or clinic supposed to trust you to fill out post-incident reporting correctly? I hope you do not rationalize the things you do when you are in a healthcare setting.
@ericaj58 GREAT JOB AT POINTING OUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION!
Props for helping to maintain accuracy on YouTube!
I thought the guy did have bariatric surgery (David Smith). We need more people to stick-up for the mis information. All DrakeGTA needs to do is put a caveat in the first line of the information bar. I thought the picutes may have been on DrakeGTA himself. Don't they use a works cited (bibliography) in the school of nursing?
@ericaj58 I thought if you lost it the "right way" like this guy did that one wouldn't have excess skin like this...
Very shocking! I'm not sure I'm convinced he didn't have some sort of surgery; when you do it the right way it's slower but the skins elasticity has time to catch up or better yet doesen't have to "catch up" at all it just all shrinks together with proper diet and excercise.
skin elasticity can only keep up with a 2.5 lb per week weight loss..bypass surgeries cause much more aesthetic damage to the body than people are willing to admit...
The person whose images are in the video is NOT a weightloss surgery patient and I believe it is rude to assume so. He lost all the weight through diet and exercise... I watched his documentary on TLC about a week ago... "600 pound Virgin" or something like that. How dare you use someone's images that you don't even know and misrepresent them as your own. I hope to goodness you are never my nurse. ugh.
I think you miss the point, the point is to show what happens to a body after weight-loss, whether it's from a gastric bypass or otherwise, the results are similar.
@DrakeGTA Well I thing the series should be re-titled if the effects of weight loss is the main point.
I watched the vid and was almost sold on the gastric bypass mantra of "very obese people need this surgery to lose weight". Come to find out he did do it the natural way!!
@DrakeGTA Sorry to vote against you. Your title IS misleading. Period. You present good information, so, why not re-title it along the lines of Issues post dramati weight loss or, some thing not using bariatric surgery in the title? Kinda like advertising a steak house only serving tuna.......or something like that....
@DrakeGTA ARE YOU GOING TO USE CRAPPY CHARTING WHEN YOU ARE A NURSE?
WILL YOU ASSUME THAT PEOPLE GET YOUR POINT BY LEAVING VITAL INFORMATION OUT OF THE CHART?
WILL YOU GUESS THAT PEOPLE GET THE POINT WHEN YOU DISCHARGE A PATIENT FOR A PHYSICIAN.
I AM A PA AND I THOUGHT THAT THIS PATIENT * DID * HAVE BARIATRIC SURGERY.
I would be so, so, mad if some yay-hoo put MY pictures up on YouTube and used them to gennerate lots, and lots, of hits. It is an F U to nurses world wide!
Hate to burst your bubble, but no amount of working out helps with the loose skin. I worked out 6 days a week since 6 weeks after my RNY and I still need surgery for the excess skin.
I believe you to be wrong. This isnt the case for some people. If your coming from being 600lbs+, then yes. But for those in their 200s.300's, even lower 400's. You could still lose your excess weight and not have loose skin. First thing is to start slowly! People tend to rush it, in which the skin does not catch up. Also the weight and excess skin depend on your height. Lets say we have a 300lb person whose 5"2. Then yes they will need some help with skin. But if the person was 6ft. Tighten up!
Then skin can tighten up easier for being taller because the weight is distributed more evenly. The person needs to balance their cardio along with strength training. You lose some fat. You gain some muscle. The skin adheres to the muscle. You need to create new and more muscle for it to adhere to. Also there are several vitamins and tips that help the skin tone up. Research is the key here. Like I before. This isnt the case for everyone. Or anyone whose had surgery. But if you lose slowly, yes.
In Australia the Plastics is covered by Medicare if any skin hangs and touches other skin. They do this under Medicare as the underneath of the hanging skin can get infections and ulcers.
I must congratulate the guy for loosing this much weight, he has an iron will.

Ah yes, understandable! Thanks for your input! :) Better then having the extra weight! I will be getting the surgery for skin removal then too..
RTsk2011 2 years ago
I believe you to be wrong. This isnt the case for some people. If your coming from being 600lbs+, then yes. But for those in their 200s.300's, even lower 400's. You could still lose your excess weight and not have loose skin. First thing is to start slowly! People tend to rush it, in which the skin does not catch up. Also the weight and excess skin depend on your height. Lets say we have a 300lb person whose 5"2. Then yes they will need some help with skin. But if the person was 6ft. Tighten up!
citycyborg 2 years ago
