Just make sure you cover everything that will matter. Aka if it is on the test you should have lectured about it. If it isn't on the test, I like to learn but when it comes to 'my grade' it doesn't matter as much. Although I do like to learn so I always listen in my classes.

For numerous generations in Egypt, the Israelites somehow avoided taking up the idolatrous practices of their masters. Moses goes up Sinai for a few days and they start worshipping cattle.
I think places like india and pakistan are really under theocracies no matter the outward appearence of the governing system. There is peer pressure and coercion to subscribe to the national religion, much of public life is steeped in it so people are indoctrinated, and the actual partition of india into india and pakistan was along religious lines. It might be argued that seeking public office in the USA is helped by being religious, but the constitution is clearly secular.
If religion is like a drug, addictive supernormal reward hits, that might explain why energy is available and effort is expended to maintain illogical 'disconnects' by the victims.

@Pigdowndog H.P. Lovecraft was a really weird guy from New England who wrote horror fiction back in the 1920's. He wrote about secretive cults, alien gods, and unspeakable horrors from the distant past. He invented Cthulhu, an alien god who's "dead, but dreaming" in his sunken city of R'lyeh under the Pacific Ocean. He's also well-known for using really long, obscure adjectives. His protagonists tended to go insane toward the end of the story.
He also wrote some "Dunsanian" kinda dream-stories.
Many thanks for that comprehensive and interesting reply. Perhaps us Brits will be better off sticking with Harry Potter. There's enough insanity over here already.

@El3ctricPenguin What the fuck is a sexual compulsive? Someone who has compulsions to have sex? What's the point of having a support group consisting of the entire human race and all other sexually reproducing animals? It'd be pretty hard to schedule a meeting that fits everyone's schedule.

Thunderf00t, it appears to me that you don't understand Behe's argument. Behe does not just say that several mutations cannot happen all at once. He claims that if they happen one at a time then each gene at each step must have some function and he can't "see" how that is possible, so therefore God is required.
The PBS movie "Judgment Day" is fantastic at showing how Behe is wrong. You can see it online for free. Just Google "Judgment Day Dover"

Oh yeah?
Well I think that guy is fat. I think he should take the goddamn cheeseburgers out of his mouth for just one second. I think society would be a much better place if he'd eat a salad, and get on a motherfucking treadmill, do a sit-up, eat some fiber, and shut the fuck up.
I think his fatness is a reflection of his religious belief: gluttony.
Gluttony is impacting on my enjoyment of the human family. It is impacting on the lives of people in the developing world.
Good God! Religious homogeneity in the Roman Empire! In the Roman Empire Empire each city--each person--had its own religion. There were thousands of different cults. Only two religions were ever persecuted--the Cult of Bacchus to the extent its meetings gave cover to political sedition, and Christianity, because it aggressively denied and attacked everyone else's religions.
I'll buy the "It's a chat not a discussion" angle but don't you hate it when you're having a chat with someone and they go on and on and you never really get a chance to add to the conversation? It's kind of like a monologue with brief commentary from PZ.
They're both totally right about university students and the "Is this going to be on the test?" plague. That question annoys the hell out of me.
PZ Myers looks and sounds as bored with thunder farts begging for reassurance as me. I notice the number of views dropping of with each video upload. Thunder fart looks like he is in love and PZ is doing his best not to notice.
I took down my thumbs-upped comment because I'm sick of you people spamming my inbox. But I'm going to repost it here because it's still what I think.
Thunderf00t you are not a good interviewer. You need to let your interviewee talk a lot more. So often you're just introducing a topic, making an observation about it, and PZ is left to just be like "yeah". Not that you don't have good observations but you're largely wasting the opportunity to talk to your guest.
@tskasa1 I don't care, it's fucking boring. Maybe your time is worthless but I'm not interested in watching thunderfoot fawn over PZ like a puppy desperate for approval. Also thunderfoot is a grad student with a youtube channel. PZ is an accomplished professor and public speaker and writer. They're not 'just two intellectual equals having a friendly chat'. Maybe you're happy to take whatever scraps he throws your way but I'm going to call it shit when that's what it is.
@myrmecophilous What's the difference between a grad student and a professor? If they can't converse as intellectual equals academic life is futile. Which is not the same as saying each acknowledges that the other knows exactly the same stuff, only that they respect each others ability to comprehend.
@MartinJWillett What you're getting at is that academics is a marketplace of ideas where a good idea is a good idea whether it comes from an undergrad or a nobel laureate. I agree. But, "what's the difference between a grad student and a professor"? Anywhere from 20 to 100 times the publications and decades of teaching and research experience, for a start. A grad student might know one area really well but a good prof will be a more broadly interesting speaker almost every time.
@myrmecophilous I was pointing out the rather obvious fact that almost every distinguished professor was once a student, although not necessarily one who wears shorts and sandals.
@MartinJWillett My point is just that it's kind of silly for people to defend this as if it was akin to the four horsemen conversations or something, and to claim that therefore it's OK for thunderf00t to monopolize the conversation because they're both equally interesting.
Students asking "will this be on the test" will stop as soon as universities drop mandatory classes that are completely unrelated to what the students wants. There will always be students in a class who don't want to be there, but have to be if they want a diploma for a field they love.
TF i agree here. Sagan had a course in xriticak thought but too late. Here in canadfa in history class lol they taught some explicit critical thinking courses. I think, health class would be a good place to teach critical thought. Simply educating people on diet produts is a serious thought and on how advertisers lie. We spend too much time on this less important.
@tskasa1 I understand that's what he's going for, but I think he's overestimating the entertainment value of such a "chat". It's not interesting and it comes off as mutually congratulatory. It's a wasted opportunity. We're all tuned in to thunderf00t's channel. He can make all these observations to us in better, edited videos addressing them specifically. We don't need to hear him make these points to PZ just to hear PZ go "yeah".
Well, it might simply be that TFoot didn't want an interview. He wanted to have a nice friendly chat with a fellow scientist. He recorded and uploaded it because he thought that it would be a nice treat some people might like to see.
It's not like TFoot is here to please us, he wanted to have a friendly chat, not an interview.
@tskasa1 I totally agree. In fact, it's the reason I like Thunderf00t's "interviews". Remember that he branded the Ray Comfort one as a "discussion". We've all heard interviews and read what these people have to say, so a more constructive discussion is sometimes much more informative.
Well said mate. We all know Tf00t is an academic of one stripe or another and he obviously enjoys talking with people who share his views. I really don't understand all the whining, talk about a sense of entitlement.
"yes but he is a biggot and hate muzzies and juice..so take that"
A bigot? What? I'm sorry, but WHAT?!?! A bigot???
How is TFoot a bigot? He is no more a bigot than he is ignorant and uneducated. TFoot is actual very punctual and factual on his claims against Islam and states that he is not actually against Muslims but against the social constructs that they subscribe to. Just like he does with Christians and everyone else. It's not hate speech, it's honesty.
@myrmecophilous Thunderfoot never claimed to be a "great interviewer" - he is very aware of his downfalls - If I was to meet Dawkings, Hitchen or even Dawkin I would probably only be able to say "Hello "
@99minerkc I went to your channel and say a vid of a young girl, so I will assume that's you. Because you're so young I will be nice in my response to your directing me to the video "ddIg3tzTggA" and claiming that is proof that the bible is true! I STRONGLY recommend that you take plenty of science classes at a non christian fundamentalist college so you learn "the real truth!!"
@Coccc22 The bible proves big bang and evolution is true and that the bible promotes child abuse and the abuse of anyone who doesn't conform to christian standards.
We can both make claims and not even offer one iota of evidence to support our claims. It's fun, yes? Of course in my case, the last two claims are actually in the bible, but I'm still not going to find the parts within it, as you've demonstrated that's not required in order to expect people to believe me.
@ScienceIsKnowledge lol calm down i agree with you...i was replying to ontologistics but if you wanted to profess that you arent a fucking moron by all means go ahead.
@MastersOfInfinity reincarnation has been proven? i am interested. i my self am agnostic tending to atheism and i would even say that if there is such a thing as reincarnation that is no prove of a god as it could happen without one.
but i would like to see your proof of reincarnation as i know none.
thank you in beforehand for filling this gap in my knowledge.
@MastersOfInfinity I'll be the first to take the bait and respond to your moronic assertions. "Reincarnation, ESP, and endless shades of paranormality" have never been proved except in the minds of believers of such rubbish... No empirical evidence whatsoever. Pick up a book and base your reasoning and intelligent observations on the voluminous wealth of information freely available to all, rather than prime time sensationalist television and dated vacuous beliefs... and do it smiling =)
If those things have all been proven, then I must have been living under a rock for the last 20 years. But fortunately, I have not. Reincarnation has not been proven. ESP has DEFINITELY not been proven (no one has been able to demonstrate such an ability under controlled laboratory conditions), the paranormal has yet to be proven.
Wait, did I just fall for a troll here...? Damn it!

Not that you don't have good observations but you're largely wasting the opportunity to talk to your guest.

tskasa1 1 year ago
@tskasa1 I don't care, it's fucking boring. Maybe your time is worthless but I'm not interested in watching thunderfoot fawn over PZ like a puppy desperate for approval. Also thunderfoot is a grad student with a youtube channel. PZ is an accomplished professor and public speaker and writer. They're not 'just two intellectual equals having a friendly chat'. Maybe you're happy to take whatever scraps he throws your way but I'm going to call it shit when that's what it is.
myrmecophilous 1 year ago
@myrmecophilous What's the difference between a grad student and a professor? If they can't converse as intellectual equals academic life is futile. Which is not the same as saying each acknowledges that the other knows exactly the same stuff, only that they respect each others ability to comprehend.
MartinJWillett 1 year ago
@MartinJWillett What you're getting at is that academics is a marketplace of ideas where a good idea is a good idea whether it comes from an undergrad or a nobel laureate. I agree. But, "what's the difference between a grad student and a professor"? Anywhere from 20 to 100 times the publications and decades of teaching and research experience, for a start. A grad student might know one area really well but a good prof will be a more broadly interesting speaker almost every time.
myrmecophilous 1 year ago
@myrmecophilous Newton was a student once.
MartinJWillett 1 year ago
@MartinJWillett Are you seriously comparing TF to newton?
myrmecophilous 1 year ago
@myrmecophilous I was pointing out the rather obvious fact that almost every distinguished professor was once a student, although not necessarily one who wears shorts and sandals.
Can you name the professor Newton studied under?
MartinJWillett 1 year ago
@MartinJWillett My point is just that it's kind of silly for people to defend this as if it was akin to the four horsemen conversations or something, and to claim that therefore it's OK for thunderf00t to monopolize the conversation because they're both equally interesting.
myrmecophilous 1 year ago
@myrmecophilous Whether or not someone is interesting is a personal opinion and is, therefore, irrelevant.

inademv 1 year ago
Students asking "will this be on the test" will stop as soon as universities drop mandatory classes that are completely unrelated to what the students wants. There will always be students in a class who don't want to be there, but have to be if they want a diploma for a field they love.

TF i agree here. Sagan had a course in xriticak thought but too late. Here in canadfa in history class lol they taught some explicit critical thinking courses. I think, health class would be a good place to teach critical thought. Simply educating people on diet produts is a serious thought and on how advertisers lie. We spend too much time on this less important.

tskasa1 1 year ago 2
@tskasa1 I understand that's what he's going for, but I think he's overestimating the entertainment value of such a "chat". It's not interesting and it comes off as mutually congratulatory. It's a wasted opportunity. We're all tuned in to thunderf00t's channel. He can make all these observations to us in better, edited videos addressing them specifically. We don't need to hear him make these points to PZ just to hear PZ go "yeah".
myrmecophilous 1 year ago
@myrmecophilous
Well, it might simply be that TFoot didn't want an interview. He wanted to have a nice friendly chat with a fellow scientist. He recorded and uploaded it because he thought that it would be a nice treat some people might like to see.
It's not like TFoot is here to please us, he wanted to have a friendly chat, not an interview.
tskasa1 1 year ago 85
@tskasa1 I totally agree. In fact, it's the reason I like Thunderf00t's "interviews". Remember that he branded the Ray Comfort one as a "discussion". We've all heard interviews and read what these people have to say, so a more constructive discussion is sometimes much more informative.

Because you're so young I will be nice in my response to your directing me to the video "ddIg3tzTggA" and claiming that is proof that the bible is true! I STRONGLY recommend that you take plenty of science classes at a non christian fundamentalist college so you learn "the real truth!!"
99minerkc 1 year ago
@Coccc22 The bible proves big bang and evolution is true and that the bible promotes child abuse and the abuse of anyone who doesn't conform to christian standards.
We can both make claims and not even offer one iota of evidence to support our claims. It's fun, yes? Of course in my case, the last two claims are actually in the bible, but I'm still not going to find the parts within it, as you've demonstrated that's not required in order to expect people to believe me.
