When I first saw this, I thought Lyle wasn't there and darn near lost it. And then again when Lyle starts choking up at the realization of what Alvin did to see him.
Films like this don't come along very often, but when they do, they will always be remembered. I saw it for the first time only last night and it had quite an impact on me. I think the story is something we can all relate to; especially those of us who have brothers and sisters, and that's a special feeling. The fact that Alvin didn't care how long it took to get to Wisconsin to see his brother was a testament to the human spirit.
In the end, its not worth falling out with someone you love.
I saw this film a few years ago-about three- and it strucked me to my knees with its purity and simplicity. How beautiful person is Alvin Straight. I have a brother and we got anger each other a year ago. I am about sixty and he's sixtyfour. It is a pitty that people hurt each other with such huge pain, sometimes.
It is a most realistic picyure of human life in this world- this "Staright Story". I love it so much..
I love this story, the movie, the actors that with their beautiful hearts - put it so nicely together ♥ RIP Richard Farnsworth ♥ We lost you too soon...
It's POWERFUL in it's simplicity. You can feel Richard Farnsworth's emotions as he gasps for breath upon hearing his brother's voice signifying, he made it...! Very emotional moment....!
David Lynch is one of the greatest directors of American Cinema. Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive to name a few. All great works of mystery and surrealism. Hell Eraserhead started out as a student film, and it became a phenomenon on the basis of Lynch's grand vision on such a small budget. Now this film goes to show how much Lynch tries to stear away from the mainstream, and in doing so he has created a very realistic, down to earth interpretation of sibling relationships. Masterful.
My God, is'nt this better than all those hollywood special effects.Very little spoken and yet so powerfull. This film has whats called a story.A very moving story.Pure genius>>>>
And to think that Richard Farnsworth was actually dying of bone cancer during this movie. He was in agonizing pain during the entire shoot. Absolutely astounding.
The end always makes my eyes tear. I guess anybody who has a brother must feel the same way. Great movie and excellent music. Mr. Farnsworth was absolutely fantastic. R.I.P.
Can someone post the scene where Alvin is talking to his daughter while they are looking at the stars? This is a great scene, but that one is my favorite. "Look at the stars, Rosie..."
@wes: Try "Great Scenes - The Straight Story". I think that´s the one you are looking for.
This is my favourite movie.
No Spielbergian "I spent 1000 Billion Dollars just for the dresses" bullshit, no over-dramatized "Gone with the wind" crap, no screaming beauty wanting to be saved, no trigger-happy (and badly shaved) lonesome-wolf-like "hero" - and above all, NO KITSCHY ENDING!
Just a plain, quiet, simple story about what love can do - and the most touching soundtrack I can think of.
Best movie ever. I wish it had a different title though. Whenever I mention it to someone, he/she thinks "The Straight Story" is about sexual orientation.
this movie is proof positive that the academy awards are a joke. this film wasn't even nominated for best picture, and a completely anti-family piece of drek called "american beauty" won best picture.
Well, American Beauty deserved an Oscar - but so did this - I definitely agree with you that it's joke this film wasn't even nominated. It is on my top 1 list.
This movie is definitely one of the greatest ever created. Two superb actors in this last scene. And the end title music...! Everyone that has a heart cries seeing this.
what is the final song?

Notice how Lyle recognize the voice of Alvin after all those years, being sick and hearing it only once.
totillion09 1 year ago
There are barely any words but this is one of the most powerful and poignant film scenes i've ever saw.
The sadness in Lyle's eyes and the intake of breathe he takes when he hears his brother's voice yell back are truly touching.

as good as it gets. who hasn't had problems with a brother, or sister. yet at the end.... wonderful piece of work.
BUT WHERE'S THE 3D VERSION??????????? (that was a joke, by the way)

I like how the camera pans upward at the end. Sort of like saying; "you did your part boys, the rest is up to God".
