@MikeXoman No, not all birds can do this but ones that hunt in forest canopies can(coopers hawk for example). The Coopers is quite small; what makes the northern goshawk so amazing is the speed and size of the bird...nearly a 4 foot wingspan. I would love to see one.

the bird merely folds its wings tightly, and spreads and flap its tail wide to slow down , guide its body thru the hole, and the legs grabs the edge of the hole rather than get the lift thu the hole, pushing off . Nothing unusual , much the same way when you pick up a delicate teacup with index finger and thumb, your pinky finger just out, a mere reflex action. Now show us the 20 zillion times young fledglings fail at the task during trial and error, or knock themselves up.

I saw a Goshawk in my garden about 30 minutes ago! In West Yorkshire, England. It was so beautiful. It caught a little sparrow (I think) and devoured it. Feathers everywhere! I hope it comes back soon.

The lure is a leather bag, like a stuffed animal, that the hawk (NOT OWL!) has been 'wedded' to. That means that when she was in training the lure would have meat on it. After a while, lure = meat. And I am trying to figure out the 11 people who don't like this. It is brilliant. This is a European Goshawk, by the way.
