  • Steampunk is my favorite sub-genre of science fiction

  • cool

  • > locked in prison cell

    > have access to scrap metal and machine tools

    > build flying machine instead of picking lock

    wut

  • Most historians suggest that Daedalus was the inventor of the hang-glider.

  • poor and slightly inaccurate re-telling of the tragedy of Daedalus and Icarus.

  • @DrewBoxNCDS

It's a Steampunk version, which is as accurate as it will get due to the fact it isn't directly related to the original myth.

I really love the art style. It's really unique and quite cute, in a way, quite fitting.

The song fits very well. Who cares if it's overused if it works? :) I tear up when watching this. Thanks for the video, sir. :)

  • what's the name of the song?

  • @TheRafangel1 Mad World

  • how's called the song?

  • This is good. But I never heard that song before. Also, stupid Icarus, that's what he get for not listening to his father. Now, what I think, steampunk version of Daedalus may want to collect what little is left of his son's body and build an android of Icarus.

  • good job short and entertaining.

  • Tears for Fear were the first band to record Mad World. It was around way before Donnie Darko or gears or war.

  • @ScaryPainting Probably wasn't around before war. Or gears, to be honest.

  • its been used in friggin donnie darko, gears of war commercial, almost everywhere! there are countless number of times they use this sappy ass song in other dramas and crap. maybe even on lifetime! but anyway. the animation is pretty good dude

  • It's by Gary Jules not Michaek Andrews.......

    jus saying....

  • Very nice video. And who cares if the song has already been used?! The song is good, your work is good, so this video is good!!

  • different....and different is good.

  • I really like this video but the story of Icarus and Daedalus was that they flew on wings attached to their feet with wax.

Other than that the animations, music, and overall effect are superb.

I would LOVE to see you do a version with them flying on wings of wax. The story of icarus and daedalus is one of my favorites...

  • @adv0cat3 it was called steampunk for a reason

  • That storyboard and song beautifully captures the essense of Daedalus and Icarus.

  • scorpions off my ass..

    YT begins to suck hard

  • ...as redone by Gary Jules

  • Mad world people. The song is mad world by tears for fears.

    Google is your friend.

  • what's the song?

  • Mad world by Tears for Fears

  • such a good song

    and a good video

  • Don't listen everything you re told. this song is very very good here and now, thks

  • Some of the sound effects are too loud/out of place. They bring too much attention to the fact that the image is 2D (example: the pencil scribbling sound). Also, would have liked some reason for the balloons to be that perceptible to sunlight, but that's the engineer in me talking.

    Pretty cool otherwise.

  • a rip of tears for our fears...

    what happen to originality!?

  • Great video, well done!

  • how they get out the window lol EPIC

  • whats this song?

  • Gary jules - Mad World

  • DONNIE DARKO!!!!!! That movie is wierd so is this beutiful track!!!

  • lol you totaly took that closing door sound from warcraft 3

  • agree, log in to bnet whaa, haha

  • wonderful video ^^

  • Very moving artwork, but why do Daedalus and Icarus need two hot-air balloons?

The whole point of the wings is that they have to use different pairs. There isn't any reason they each have to have their own balloon. :p

  • Great video...

  • This video is magnificent. If you will forgive me for repeating someone else, this video deserves a song that is not so directly linked to an already extant piece of popular media.

  • Nice idea ^ - ^

    5/5

  • wonderful idea Phaethon0130. It's way cool how you combined an ancient story with a genre from the future. By the by you should actually check out Donnie Darko which is the movie that used this track in it. You may like it. I do :)

  • great video.

  • this comes from greek mythology deadalus and icarus were imprisoned in the labrynth and deadalus proposed an idea to make wings from the feathers and wax to escape soon after deadalus and icarus made the wings but before they escaped deadalus warned icarus not too fly to high or the sun would melt the wax and not to fly too low or the water would make the wings to heavy. after his warning deadalus and icarus escaped from the labrynth but icarus did not heed his fathers words and flew to high

  • Nice work!

Maybe Icarus could use too much heat to make his balloo go higher that his balloon will burn in flames instead of being burned by the Sun...

    Just a idea...

    Your video is great anyway!

  • awesome

  • That was so beautiful.

  • This makes me cry almost everytime I hear/see it. I <3 it. Nice job! I didn't even hear the song before! <3

  • Very cool.

  • what is the song?

  • Mad World, by Tears for Fears. Used in Donnie Darko. This is the slower, more atmospheric version created for Donnie Darko, the original being very upbeat and quite ironic.

  • i think this is the 'Gary Jules' version, actually.

which was the one used in Donnie Darko.

  • no, its called mad world by gary jules

  • You know what? Who cares if we've heard the song before?

You've taken it and put it into a wonderful context which is certainly new to me!

    Great work!

  • what a great comment! you see so much bad comments about videos an you tube. it's good to see one like this.

i so agree. the song works so well with a great video. it puts you right in th mood, espesaly at the end when the baloon bursts, the lirics fit that part so well.

  • :) This was VERY VERY good!

Have you heard the song "Daedalus" by Thrice? It's great. Maybe for another similar project?

    Anyhow, great stuff, mate!

  • Nice work! Beautiful video

  • Wow...just...wow <3

  • Very, very nice. Interesting composition. The art style used gave the still frames a very animated feel.

  • Well done.

  • I just remembered that i heard this on the Battlefield Bad Company trailer. Good song though.

  • Bravo!

    I love it!

  • very very beautiful :)

  • Lovely, lovely work.

the music sits well with the overall atmosphere.

  • beautiful video! Well done! I really love it the music made it even better. What's the name of the song?

  • Pretty sure the song was used on Donnie Darko,

  • it was

  • Well, to be fair it wasn't an "overplayed" song until it was used on the Gears of War trailer, and it's a nice choice of soundtrack regardless. The first time I heard this version (not the Tears for Fears version) was on Gary Jules' album.

This is some really nice work - 5 stars xx

  • i absolutely adore steam punk and love the guards with the gas masks, top marks

  • Check out Thrice's "The Melting Point of Wax" and "Daedalus"....it's the story told from both perspectives...it's pretty awesome.

  • That's a wonderful adaptation of the myth! What happened to Icarus in the myth and this version was very sad.

    Good job!

  • wats the name of this song

  • Mad World by Gary Jules

  • sorry... Gary Jules is singing

  • Very interesting adaptation of the original myth; I definitely liked it. Your images look great.

Though, in regards to the music; yeah, it is a bit overused, but that's okay. I think you could have found a song that better fits this, maybe, but it went well with how the images moved, I thought.

  • That's a cool. Love the style of art work. The song has been used alot, but I still like it. :)

  • your style seems perfected

  • Very sad...hopeful...touching...

    the history of mankind !

    Fine artwork!

  • Nice work with the Foley effects too!

  • i like the gestalt of your images. Great, classic '2d design' black and white work. My crit though would be to have had your images broken up into different planes, so a figure could slide indepently of the background. I would argue that the project still used 2d static images, and that the sliding action is no different than the zoom and pan that you used.

    Cool project, thanks for sharing

  • Good job. But still I don't get how they had all those materials in the tower? You or someone else should remake a bunch of myths with steampunk, it would be awesome man.

  • I second Floopi89's proposal.

Though, in response to Floopi89's question: How did Daedalus and Icarus get the materials for the wings in the original story? Perhaps this question is motivation for some people to read the original myth.

  • I do agree that the song is extremely overused, but it is a really good song, and it fits well. I liked Gary Jules BEFORE Donnie Darko came out and I got really annoyed with the explosion of popularity this song got afterwards. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, though. I highly recommend it.

  • I think this is a very good adaptation of the story. The song really doesn't bother me; it fits.

  • The art is really cool.

  • omg brilliant

  • ! ecin yrev

  • This would be good without the whiny music. A pox on Donnie Darko for making this song fashionable.

  • replacing Ic's wax wings with baloons kinda defeats the whole point

  • In what way does it defeat the whole point?

  • Its just that Daedalus used feather and wax to make his wings - materials that are readily available. King Minos would get suspicious if Daedalus was requisitioning materials to build hot air balloons.

But I love the video and the artistic style!

  • this was definately amazing.

I LOVE the artwork, and the new flying machines are definately beast. =]

  • That is totally awesome! I love this video! And the song. It suits great.

  • Wow I came across this by accident ....I love wonderful Accidents well done :)

  • Awesome!

  • KICK ARSE MAN!!! nice re-imagining, i saw the guards and was like O.O

    nice work

  • the artist singing this is gary jules and its the cover of mad world

  • great job!!! no worries for the song, it fits the video like a glove. 5 stars, i really like your work.

  • i dont like it , no colour but still 5/5 effort

  • this is tears for fears "mad world" song. covere by another artist.

  • that was awesome! great job.

  • Wow, I'm /really/ loving this.

  • I'm doing a latin movie on Icarus & Daedalus.

  • Very nice.

  • Best original video I've seen on this site in weeks, and I have no life cuz I am on this like non-stop.

  • People say the song is overused because there was a Gears of War commercial that used it. At it was played, EVERYWERE. Its a good song though, and a better movie. Good job.

  • The song is from Donnie Darko, which is a pretty good movie. I don't think it's overused; you're the first person I've seen who's used it. Maybe it's just me.

    And I like it, anyhow.

  • I did, in fact, finally see Donnie Darko last Saturday. But I still feel the song is pretty much neutral.

  • I really like the design style, looks like wood-block.

The Icarus story is also an immortal classic. Being raised by wierd parents, I read it as a kid in a picture-book of Greek myths, and always thought it was awesome.

It would be better if the song didn't immediately call to mind the film "Donnie Darko", but that aside it's outstanding.

  • I happen to like this song :)

Also, I love the hwole steampunk thing you've done there, very nice

  • Apology accepted, though the song is mind-numbingly bad.

  • so beautiful. thanks for the video. it was really nice to see.

  • Yeh, Touching. Nicely paced camera moves, and good composition. How did they get out the window?

  • Hello Phaethohon0130

thank you for your link. I like your work. Good illustations. But I think I like more to lissen your own music for the pictures not a popluar song. I use the term steam-punk for on of my own work group. What is the difinition for you about the term steampunk?

    Good wishes

    Arne Witt

  • By all means, use your own music! I'm not particularly attached to the song, truth be told.

As for steampunk, I follow the "usual" definition - a sci-fi genre in which modern technology is replaced by outlandish Victorian steam and clockwork tech.

  • I love steampunk stuff. Great video.

  • This project is truly something to be proud of.

  • That was a beautiful video, loved the steampunk variation of the classic myth and loved the art. Brilliant.

  • A nice twist to my favorite myth. :'D

    5/5

  • Gorgeous. This is art, yo.

  • Great take on the Icarus story. Thanks for loading it.

  • Beautiful, what 2D animation program did you use?

  • This is actually photoshop-painted stills put together in iMovie.

  • The only time I've heard this song outside this is the Gears of war comercial. Dude, it works, be proud. You get fifty coolies.

  • Gears of War... That might have been a more powerful song for that commercial if I hadn't seen and really liked Donnie Darko first. Great game, don't care for the song in that commercial though.

  • Hi Phaethon, I love this. I don't know if this music is overused, I've never heard it, but I love it too : what is it by the way? thanks in advance.

  • It's a cover of the Tears for Fears song "Mad World" done by Michael Andrews (it's listed at the end of the video). Glad you like it!

  • Thanks! My nephew is gonna study animation or cinema soon (in Paris, France), so I got sensitive to anything pertaining to that. Where are you studying?

  • Paris is great for animation right now. Check out the Gobelins school website if you want to see some amazing student animation. I, however, am in St. Louis.

  • Very cool indeed. The music may be overused, but the drawings are unique, and unlike a lot of stuff around here, tells a story. Good work.
