This is good. But I never heard that song before. Also, stupid Icarus, that's what he get for not listening to his father. Now, what I think, steampunk version of Daedalus may want to collect what little is left of his son's body and build an android of Icarus.
its been used in friggin donnie darko, gears of war commercial, almost everywhere! there are countless number of times they use this sappy ass song in other dramas and crap. maybe even on lifetime! but anyway. the animation is pretty good dude
Some of the sound effects are too loud/out of place. They bring too much attention to the fact that the image is 2D (example: the pencil scribbling sound). Also, would have liked some reason for the balloons to be that perceptible to sunlight, but that's the engineer in me talking.
This video is magnificent. If you will forgive me for repeating someone else, this video deserves a song that is not so directly linked to an already extant piece of popular media.
wonderful idea Phaethon0130. It's way cool how you combined an ancient story with a genre from the future. By the by you should actually check out Donnie Darko which is the movie that used this track in it. You may like it. I do :)
this comes from greek mythology deadalus and icarus were imprisoned in the labrynth and deadalus proposed an idea to make wings from the feathers and wax to escape soon after deadalus and icarus made the wings but before they escaped deadalus warned icarus not too fly to high or the sun would melt the wax and not to fly too low or the water would make the wings to heavy. after his warning deadalus and icarus escaped from the labrynth but icarus did not heed his fathers words and flew to high
Mad World, by Tears for Fears. Used in Donnie Darko. This is the slower, more atmospheric version created for Donnie Darko, the original being very upbeat and quite ironic.
what a great comment! you see so much bad comments about videos an you tube. it's good to see one like this.
i so agree. the song works so well with a great video. it puts you right in th mood, espesaly at the end when the baloon bursts, the lirics fit that part so well.
Well, to be fair it wasn't an "overplayed" song until it was used on the Gears of War trailer, and it's a nice choice of soundtrack regardless. The first time I heard this version (not the Tears for Fears version) was on Gary Jules' album.
Very interesting adaptation of the original myth; I definitely liked it. Your images look great.
Though, in regards to the music; yeah, it is a bit overused, but that's okay. I think you could have found a song that better fits this, maybe, but it went well with how the images moved, I thought.
i like the gestalt of your images. Great, classic '2d design' black and white work. My crit though would be to have had your images broken up into different planes, so a figure could slide indepently of the background. I would argue that the project still used 2d static images, and that the sliding action is no different than the zoom and pan that you used.
Good job. But still I don't get how they had all those materials in the tower? You or someone else should remake a bunch of myths with steampunk, it would be awesome man.
Though, in response to Floopi89's question: How did Daedalus and Icarus get the materials for the wings in the original story? Perhaps this question is motivation for some people to read the original myth.
I do agree that the song is extremely overused, but it is a really good song, and it fits well. I liked Gary Jules BEFORE Donnie Darko came out and I got really annoyed with the explosion of popularity this song got afterwards. I'm not saying it's a bad movie, though. I highly recommend it.

jesus, forget the song, the sound effects are so distracting. We get the idea of what's going on from the slideshow, we don't need lame ass squeaks and creaks
Its just that Daedalus used feather and wax to make his wings - materials that are readily available. King Minos would get suspicious if Daedalus was requisitioning materials to build hot air balloons.
People say the song is overused because there was a Gears of War commercial that used it. At it was played, EVERYWERE. Its a good song though, and a better movie. Good job.

It's a Steampunk version, which is as accurate as it will get due to the fact it isn't directly related to the original myth.
I really love the art style. It's really unique and quite cute, in a way, quite fitting.

I really like this video but the story of Icarus and Daedalus was that they flew on wings attached to their feet with wax.
Other than that the animations, music, and overall effect are superb.
I would LOVE to see you do a version with them flying on wings of wax. The story of icarus and daedalus is one of my favorites...

The whole point of the wings is that they have to use different pairs. There isn't any reason they each have to have their own balloon. :p
