  • rest in peace, dear friend. love always

  • before I knew of Elliott's understated greatness, i quit drinking and smoking dope on my last wedding anniversary b4 I divorced. got into elliot after that and realized today, (oct 21st), was the day he left this planet....odd he helped me greatly with his craft and his art. Wish I could have helped him...that was 2003. Still sober and drugfree...

  • all the good ones kill themselves

  • why does it feel as if this guy never existed? im the only person that knows and likes elliot smith in my school (or even my town)

  • @SegaSatern Elliotts fans know he existed and he is by far the most relevant artist of the last twenty years ,just feel privileged that you are aware of him , I do know exactly what you mean but sometimes I think it only makes him even more personal to me . rest in peace Elliott (our brother from another mother)

  • Most painfully missed songwriter ever... :-(

  • All I can really say is that the lyrics almost made me cry because I believe he is talking about himself in this song

  • Please somehow come back. Shit sucks.

  • he was & is still the most real & truthful songwriter ever.

  • "Yeah, I jumped off a cliff, but let's talk about something else."

when Elliott tried to commit suicide..... the first time....

  • So haunting, in the most beautiful way.

  • if you know anything about the Bible, God looks at the heart. In his note he wrote, "Forgive me God". and though this might not apply to everyone. (as in "so, you can just write a note to God before committing suicide?") I truly believe that Steven Smith is in heaven. It's very very hard to explain.

  • Comment removed

  • @withperfecttiming if Elliotts in hell I would rather be there than in a heaven without him .

  • @hebdomad3710 he's not

  • @withperfecttiming exactly :)

  • @chriscoan666 better place? Aren't you an atheist? Well I suppose theres worse things than death. maybe thats what you meant

  • this song brings me to tears

  • 10/21...RIP...we miss you

  • We miss you Steven Paul Smith.

  • If I have a boy, his name will be Elliott; as he ws the first artist my boyfriend, also a songwriter and singer, danced to....

  • What happen to him I heard a song of his on a movie trailer I had never heard his music before its so good Im sad that im learning hes no longer with us im just discovering him for the first time.

  • @AudioAndroid i know how you feel. a couple years ago when i discovered him i was amazed. but then i was heartbroken when i found out hes dead.

  • Comment after comment of the same dull stuff. Pitying and making him out to be some helpless pathetic guy who had a knack for writing music. Writing as if you were there and watched him spiral through this and that and bullshit. Have some goddamn respect

  • I love Smith's music.. But damn.. Some of you people confuse me. You write things up here as if you knew him personally and as if you and him were close personally. I understand his music can touch people in different ways, and we can all appreciate it.. But you have to remember that it's just his music, and not necessarily excerpts from a diary of his.

He has commented he thought that sometimes people took some of his songs the wrong way... What more could you ask for? Get your heads on

  • @mogwais

So it is totally out of the realm of possibility for someone who actually did know Elliot to post on youtube? Get over yourself, toolbag.

  • @mogwais I disagree.....his music was a diary....elliot was a heart felt musician that didn't try and hide his true meanings........and people feeling close too him because of this fact made him great....great artist make music that connects with their fans..........

  • god this song makes me cry.

  • Elliot, love you bro! One of THE BEST songs ever written! Damn.

  • R.I.P Brother.

I hope you found what you needed.

  • amazing

its sad this baby killed himself

he should have known he was more than amazing and more that worth living for

    bless his soul

  • Yeah, just shows you the true horrors of depression. It's so sad, he had so much to live for, and he was successful, but he didn't think he was worth anything =( Elliott's happier now though =)

  • @purpledrohaze777 Happier now? I dunno, I kinda thought he was dead

  • He knew that, but why was it that people never told him that while he could actually hear it ;_;.

  • @KeyboardOwner people did :)

  • Nice homage to an ironic song. I miss Elliott...

  • This song is an example of the most beautiful, pure, creative genius, and although Elliot Smith could have written any number of songs just like it easily, to him, it probably seemed ordinary, that is the tragedy.

  • perhaps its his modesty that makes him so enchanting

  • this song hits my soul, truly a masterpiece

  • this is like my fav by him :) love this guy

  • hell yeah elliott smith is sick

  • it's so sad that he's not here anymore...

the way his songs make you feel, how beautiful, or rocking, or sad they are. how they're so well crafted musically, so moving lyrically, and unique creations all his own.

how humble and down to earth he seemed.

    it's a genuine tragedy that he's gone

  • Many people think this song is about Elliott contemplating suicide. I disagree. I'm pretty sure this song is about Elliott deciding to finally kick drugs. I know people with drug problems, and they consider their habit a sort of "dark friend." Yet since his passing, the song has taken on another meaning. Very nice video.

  • I think that good music has the ability to mean something different to each person.

  • good call.

  • jeff buckley has nothing on elliott

  • buckley's two best songs are covers (lilac wine and hallelujah)......yes he has written some good, once or twice great songs but elliott is so much more prolific and competent in writing great and timeless songs

  • You're taking a subjective statement as fact. In my view, for example, Buckley's best songs are "Eternal Life" and "Nightmares by the Sea. This doesn't fit with your statement. Who is right? Both of us, perhaps. Your logic is flawed.

You also fail to consider aspects such as who had the time to create more songs (and thus had a greater likelihood of creating more great music: Buckley only made one proper studio album while alive), and other such factors. Use logic when trying to make points...

  • jeff has such a better voice

  • agreed.

  • Best songwriter of the 90s

  • dont ever! ever! forget jeff buckley!

  • i loved this man. and i never got to see him.

  • your entire statement is subjective and philosophically incorrect.

just because you choose to not or can't recognize it does not mean that it doesn't exist.

i'm not saying that it does, but saying "karma is experienced never" is completely ignorant.

  • karma is make believe-- yes, you're right. And so is life.

  • elliot....

  • morbidflorist12, please kill yourself.

  • i don't understand people like you that don't have any compassion. you will pay karmic debt, and you're an asshole.

  • i cant believe its not BUTTER!

  • Karma is the law of cause and effect. It does not equate to "if you do a bad thing to somebody, you will pay for it later in this life". It equates to "If you undertake and action, that action will have flow on effects." If you want to take it further and assume there is a cycle of samsara (life, death, and rebirth, eventually followed by Nirvana, hopefully) then a single action will be relatively insignificant in the scheme of things, so saying they will pay karmic debt is petty and irrational.

  • maybe you're right. but dharma kicks karmas ass.

  • Dharma and Karma can't fairly be compared, because one is the ultimate truth, the other is the results of choices we make - like flowing down a river, our choices change the currents, and determine where our river takes us.

  • I just made peace with my ex fiance...we broke up due to a bad mental illness.....I forgave her and now I understand....thank you elliot

  • i wouldnt do that well u can do what ever you want like u can forgive someone dosent mean u still have to like her or talk to her cause dealing with someone with a illness is shitty im telling you ur ex will hold you back and keep your life in her hands the way my mom is doing to me if i were u i wouldnt do that but since im only 14 i dont have a choice to stop visitations till im 18 cause DCFS dosent do shit the illness dosent overcome she might just fuck u over again
  • reminds me of dope sickness;

    dont ever wanna go back.

  • me too! dope sick right now! dont want to be here

  • wots dope sickness?

  • get suboxone it's like a miracle

  • makes me think of my ex gf

she broke up with me 1 1/2 years ago and 2 days after she did, her parents made her mad.... and she killed her self..

  • thanx for posting this vid,a very beautiful song!

  • Beautiful video you put together. Great work!

    RIP Elliott

  • Elliott Smith me manque, terriblement... Ses chansons me hantent, pour toujours...

  • Really Love this song! One of my favourite ever!

  • his music sends chills down my spine. i wish he was still around today so i could hear his amzing voice

  • could be worse, he coulda been like conor oberst

  • I don't get it. Could you explain?

  • whats everyones deal with hating conor oberst? seriously? I'm not a huge fan but still appreciate the music.

  • one of the best ever...

  • This is beautiful

  • Been there...leaving there. What a song. My favorite artist.

  • Very well done!

    We miss you Elliott!!!

  • Some souls are just born sad. I can relate! He was a beautiful, artist and that's all that should be dicussed here. In sadness it breeds, great, creation!

    KJO

  • At 2:36 why is ferdinand the bull on his left arm?

  • Elliott does an interview and talks about that tattoo. If I find it I'll let you know.

    XO

    David

  • How can you see from that angle that is ferdinand?

  • R.I.P Elliot, only respect for you and your music.n.e.r.d.

  • ok people really need to stop posting argumentative comments under a memorial to someone

would you start a fist fight at a funeral?

pleases im not trying to be an asshole or anything but please show some respect for this amazing man thankyou ---peace and love for you my friends

  • i think everyone need to stop posting comments about depression. half have no clue what there talking about and the other half post myth. This song and the events leading to his death should tell you all you need about clinical depression. there are 32,439 deaths a year. its easy to see why when you look at the gross misunderstandings about it.

  • Bravo.

  • thankyou

  • Good vid

  • I dunno are you sheeple?

There's a healthiness to depression, if you don't wanna be happy and want to be depressed...then what do you call it when you get what you want/being depressed/? Euphoria? Im prob goin about this the wrong way but ,meh.

  • healthiness to depression. stop posting dumb shit.

  • Im only Replying to all your sissy comments.

  • elliott smith was a musical genius..

and mot certainly not crazy so don't judge depression if you've never felt it. depression is as real an emotion as sadness and happiness. don't you forget it adirtybum. just because you can bounce back doesn't mean depression isn't real or is "crazy". again don't judge what you've never felt because it just pisses off the people that have felt it.

  • i love elliot smith

  • i would expect that kind of response from alot of elliot smith listeners, i would jus say listen to him more and and try to play these songs on guitar, if you can play these songs and say the things he says, you know he had a good head on his shoulders, life is good when you can express yourself like he did, you don't get all nuts and kill yourself.

  • elliott smith listners don't listen to just smith.i'm jamming to the wiggles with my kid right now,i'm just saying that the way u r expressing yourself u r telling people that they need 2get over this and that and blah blah, let them be depressed if they want, let them off themselves if they choose 2 cause its not yours to make....

  • Anybody ever catch the live audio version of him singing this song and after it he says "it's true" - it's a really awesome show, and it's really heartfelt. I think that was one of the shows after he was clean, because he was really chatty with the crowd and kept saying how everything was okay with him, even though his songs were newer ones and still somewhat depressing.

  • happiness could not have produced this

  • wahhh

don't worry bout what produced what, produce something yourself.

  • dont worry about dictating people on how to live their lives, go live your own

  • there's a difference between dictation and advice

  • fuck you, you asshole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are you crying right now....you are aren't you.

Honest, you don't have to be sucha panzy to enjoy elliot smith for those of you reading these comments and thinking that cause of the wussy things people are saying, he was good and pretty Core and prob murdered by his Girl.

  • i freak'en love this song!! this reminds me of my friend!! i miss you trevor! come back so i can show you this song!

  • Elliott has such an interseting face. His face was constantly changeing through out his brief life. you can see when the drugs and alcohol were distorting his face, along with mental suffering. but what beautiful music that came out of him!

  • He wasn't that nuts, theirs questions bout hif g/f and his death, so...

  • I don't think suicide is crazy. I mean I wouldn't do it, but if you were just that unhappy, and made up your mind that being dead would be worse than suffering alive I wouldn't call that crazy.

  • yes it is crazy, if you are suffering then do what you have to to get happy, you create your problems, suicide cause of depression is literally crazy.

  • Actually suicide BECAUSE of depression is not crazy. Depression creates a lot of unreal ideas, beliefs, and tends to distort the real truth in order to fit into your depressed scheme. Suicide is a sad thing, and depression is unfortunate too, because a person isn't always strong enough to control the things that can cause them to do such a drastic thing

  • suicide is romantacized, its a number of things, he did not seem unhappy in any footage of him that i have seen, just cause the songs appear to be sad doesnt mean anything about him, he's making music.

suicide cause of suffering is weak if not crazy but i dont think it is refelctive of just the persons so it isnt weak it is crazy romantic nonsense, his g/f did it..

  • yeah, depression= crazy, get over your person and realize how good life is, the ups and the downs, i am fully aware of the Federal reserve and slavehood, yet im lovin life the more i learn, married in love broke up.. back out there single.. its all good and bad, love it.

  • you will never know what anyone truly really feels...ever. so adirtybum think what you will but don't judge. hope you don't ever knows what it feels like to be so low that you do want to end it all. sorry we are not as pefect and you and are just "crazy" as you put it. lets all just shove some pill down our throat and medicate ourselfs to make ourselves..."happy."

  • and BTW, no one was judging... i didn;t say crazy was bad or good.

"Every man thinks that his burden is the heaviest"

  • If u don't want 2read the rambling of smith fans & how his words mean something to them don't bother listening to his music, most of his lyrics are a somber tone so what do u expect from people on here? For them to get "jiggy" with it lol. Let them be & go on and be happy, blah blah & enjoy life and what not.

  • i replay cause i can just like you can. i reply to explain, you reply to feel better about yourself and look down on others for being down and out. i would rather watch vanilla ice or freaken old episodes of saved by the bell than watch that nonsence cause it has nothing to do with me. thats your thing no interest in it. i can be depressed,i can be annoying,i can even be a smart azz cause thats how i roll. i might even roll off a cliff lol

  • Just stumbled on this little spat here, and don't ever doubt who you are. You are clearly a complete prick.

  • lol

  • Not only is that ignorant, but that is a flat out lie by the standards of the field that actually evaluates things like depression and other mental illnesses (psychology)

  • R.I.P. Elliott's genius will never be forgotten

  • This song is about his drug addiction...great song.

  • May have been foul play in his death

  • The sweetest and saddest song I've ever heard.

  • my favourite eliott-smith-song <3

he was such a great guy.

    R.I.P.

  • great montage.I really love this song as well.

I was lucky enough to meet him, he was really cool to talk to.

  • There are questions bout his death i hope you know

  • elliott pwns you all

  • Oh! Such a pretty song. He is sorely missed.

  • this is my favourite song. rip elliott smith<3

  • SHEEEEEEEE XD

  • This song defines me, too.

  • this song defines him.

  • smacks lovemeIrene21 on the head

  • I love this song. The guitar reminds me of a beatles song, and his voice sounds like a ghost, i love it.

  • fuck you, dudeferguson!

  • ^

    I agree.

  • what the hell? I replied to someone's comment, and it did this... arses=\.

  • Wow... Even with his name in the title of the video, douchefucks like you still manage to misspell "Elliott". Retard.

  • It's just a fond farewell to a friend

    It's not what I'm like

It's just a fond farewell to a friend

    Who couldn't get things right

    Fond farewell to a friend

    This is not my life

It's just a fond farewell to a friend

  • Who couldn't get things right

    Fond farewell to a friend

I see you're leaving me and taking up with the enemy

The cold comfort of the in between

A little less than a human being

A little less than a happy high

A little less than a suicide

The only things that you really tried

    This is not my life

  • He said really I just wanna dance Good and evil matched perfect it's a great romance I can deal with some physic pain If it'll slow down my higher brain Veins full of disappearing ink Vomiting in the kitchen sink Disconnecting from the missing link This is not my life It's just a fond farewell to a friend It's not what I'm like It's just a fond farewell to a friend
  • The litebrite's now black and white Cause you took apart a picture that wasn't right Pitch burning on a shining sheet The only maker that you'd want to meet The dying man in a living room Who's shadow paces the floor Who'll take you out in the open door This is not my life It's just a fond farewell to a friend It's not what I'm like It's just a fond farewell to a friend Who couldn't get things right Fond farewell to a friend
  • good song...

  • my pardons "un"adulterated.

  • I always thought this song was about his addiction to heroin, thus the line "Pitch burning on a shining sheet

The only maker that you'd want to meet " all that matters though is that it is pure 100% adulterated Elliott.

  • *pulled the knife out. sorry

  • lovely stuff. bill oddie's words. not mine.

  • i think he did kill himself... only because smith threatened chiba that he would... chiba ignored him and took a shower... only to find his body with a couple of stab wounds... but i agree... don't hate on him... he was an artist... artists see the world in a different way than you

  • and, btw, this song in this video is sometimes thought to be his "suicide note" :-/

  • the two were arguing, and she locked herself in the bathroom. Chiba heard him scream, and upon opening the door, saw Smith standing there with a steak knife in his chest. She pulled the knife out of him, after which he collapsed and she called 911. Smith died at the hospital, with the time of death listed as 1:36 p.m. ( MAYBE ) .

  • thank you for this info... i'm not quite a fan... although i love a few of his songs such as 2:45 am and Fond Farewell, i can't really get into his music, because i'm too lazy

  • maybe is right, u have to consider the facts that he had marks on his wrist as signs of a struggle, no hesitation marks, and she pulled the knife. i think she did it

  • I don't know whether he killed himself or not; I wasn't there. I think that he was one of these rare souls that knew too much about his inner soul, and he only focused on the negative side that unfortunately humanity seems to be drawn into, naturally. He went the distance to explore this area and it ultimately proved fatal.

A true pioneer of the human soul.

    He meant well.

  • Yeah, but he obviously wrote it before he died...

  • People need to accept the fact that he most likely killed himself. Just because he was a famous musician, doesnt mean he wouldnt do it just because he was getting so much money. Same with Kurt Cobain, although i really do believe Kurt was murdered because theres more proof than Elliot getting murdered. Either way, this song sounds like elliots suicide note to himself.

  • actually he killed himself 3 years after this song came out and he had been suicidle for some time

  • Maybe Elliott Did I Dont Belive So But If Not Jennifer Helped Elliott

  • Good job, i really like it

  • It remains unknown, just as it will with Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, if Elliott ended his life intentionally. In his case, he may have been stabbed by his girlfriend. In Nick's case it may have been an accidental overdose of prescription meds, and with Jeff, well, he went swimming with his boots on the night he drowned.

  • I love that he called him by his real name...Steven "Elliott" Smith.

  • I don't think elliot killed himself either myself

  • actually elliot smith didn't kill himself... he was murdered...

  • Oh Elliott,

  • Best musician ever

  • nice vid

  • elliot smith is a genius so fuck you for losing any respect for him. hendrix killed himself with drugs and no one talks shit on him. let the music speak for itself

  • damn I didn't even know he was dead. i've liked his music for a while but never knew he killed himself.

i've lost almost all respect for him. still like his music though.
