  • For the love of metal and Burton stop mixing out the bass!!! Jeezus thats THE most important part in this entire song

  • berkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

    kkkkkkkkk

  • bands like dream theater and in flames have exceeded metallica , but if it wasnt for metallica these bands would never be , metallica probably contributed to music more than any other band , in flames may be the best band in history , but its because of metallica that they became that .

its the evolution of music !!!

  • I'm sorry, the keyboard is great in Dream Theater... but it just sounds wrong in a Metallica song, like really wrong.

  • @ddensu learning to live is a nice song i won't deny it but even being a song with lyrics it doesn't give me as much feelings as orion, but even almost 50 years old fat james hetfield gives me more energy while i see him playing orion coz u can see in his face he is fucking enjoying it and actually means something to him...,and i dindt say technique or complexity are antogonists to feelings, they are important but can't be placed before emotions, when it comes to emotions metallica actually wins

  • @kurthetfield93 You can't really compare bands when it comes to emotions. Well you shouldn't compare bands in general. You can say that you like one band more than the other, but each band is unique and awesome in their own way and none is is "better" than the other. Remember that music isn't a sport, it's an art. You can't say Picasso is better than Van Gogh! Although I agree, Orion is amazing and Metallica was THE band that actually got me into music :)

  • DT = a bunch of increadibly talented guys such as guitar players, bass players, keyboard players, drummers n singers, but as musicians idk since they lack of feelings, they removed every single drop of emotions from this song and i mean when i listen to the original it almost makes me cry, takes anger away and energizes me...so remember music its not just about who's the fastest, its about the emotions in ur soul... n dont bs me with ur 2 different genres thing coz music is music no matter what

  • @kurthetfield93 Sorry, but saying that DT is a "soul-less band" is absolute BS.

Listen to "Learning To Live" and then tell me they don't have a drop of feeling.

Technique and complexity are not antagonistic to the feeling, they are complementary.

  • @kurthetfield93 bs... dream theater is loaded with oceans of feeling and emotions, music IS feeling... get ur head out ur arse, no offense.

  • I heard that Portnoy is the best drummer in the world

  • DT can cover anything it really doesn't matter. Every time they tour I see them and it is always on the top of every concert I attend.

  • I heard that Portnoy drummed this using only his right foot

  • How can there be so much talent in one group of musicians!? Its like the council of Elrond with Instruments

  • Sucks without Cliff, and that someone put a keyboard on this song.

  • I love Dream Theater, but honestly i prefer Rodrigo y Gabriela version of Orion

  • 2011

  • Cliff Myung is my favorite bass player.. no point in arguing

  • thats sick artwork

  • Speed it up a little lol

  • There's a reason why bands that are technically superior to Metallica still cover Metallica songs. While Metallica may not be the most complicated band, they had the most balls during the 80s. Metallica Rules!!!!

  • @Gilhfree When I see DT playin live, they're cold as an iceberg, of course they're very technical and kind of virtuoso thing, but there's no emotion in their performance, metallica's way to perform any song makes me headbang

  • @breadfanmgl

Dream Theater: music for people with Asperger's.

  • @breadfanmgl Well said.

  • @breadfanmgl Seriously? I felt something totally different when I saw them live in Chile, they played The Dance of Eternity and we all were -struggling to- headbanging that song; they dedicated The Spirit Carries On for the victims of the earthquake; and violining part of The Count of Tuscany took me to another dimension.

I think that depends of the crowd. Usually DT crowd aren't so vigorous, but in Chile it did.

  • @breadfanmgl Metallica live performances and Dream Theater performances are just different, its for different types of people. Being a fan of both, I enjoy head banging, but i also enjoy sitting there and watching the band play perfectly. I would just suggest loving all bands. Dream Theater can make you wanna head bang to, it just takes patience to know how the song is crafted, and also knowledge on time signatures

  • @Gilhfree

Metallica did the greatest show metal ever done: Seattle '89.

Gotta give em credit for that. Songs Sanitarium and Battery on that performance are just fucking amazing. And I dont even consider Metallica as the best band. Pantera Megadeth Dream Theater Death Cynic and Alice in Chains are first :p

  • i want to hear dt cover megadeth

  • @Daniel8972 I think they'd need two guitars, even with John Petrucci.

  • Kick ass, man.

  • The Bass solo at the intro was done by the guitars.

  • @HSimon1981 No . It is a bass .

  • @DjRaveKing Althought there's only one guitar (petrucci)

  • This is a pretty damn good cover, top marks 2 Dream Theater 4 doin' this man.

  • dream theatre = petrucci

  • @abdotassi77 Dream Theatre = John Petrucci, John Myung, James LaBrie, Jordan Rudess, Mike Mangini and God. Oh wait, I already mentioned Petrucci.

  • @guitarbassist95 come on man you know what i mean , what make dream theatre awesome is the petrucci solos

  • @abdotassi77 Well yeah, I have to agree... :) But I would probaply lose my interest if Petrucci would be the only original member left in the band.

  • @abdotassi77 If you are such a fan. write the name of the band right......

  • @Cavaro03 i'm sorry i confused it the french word

  • My 2 most favorite things in the whole world blended into 1.

  • Members of Dream Theater sitting in a room one day: "Do you know what this masterpiece is lacking? A keyboard solo. How about two? Perfect!"

    Fucking geniuses.

  • Of course Dream Theater would make the song a bit longer lol but Both bands are FUCKING INCREDIBLE!

  • @therockingpug

Dont tell me Metallica doesnt make songs too long xD. The diffrence between Dream Theater and Metallica about that particular thing is that Dream Theater puts alot more diffrent riffs, rythms and solos in it than Metallica so it doesnt bore you when it lasts over 10 minutes ^^.

Awesome bands. Awesome song. Cliff, nice writing.

  • @Brutalyeah I didn't mean it like Metallica makes too long of songs, I meant that Dream Theater just has VERY long songs so they would make this a bit longer so it's normal for them. But it's okay that DT has long ass songs because they are worth listening to anytime.

  • Hey, James LaBrie did nice job here!

  • @Gonzzzovsky lol'ed

  • I'm surprised this isn' even 1 hour long..

  • this song is only perfect on the Master of Puppets album, 'cause of Cliff

  • I don't get it! Who would possibly dislike this?

  • !..THIS IS AMAZING..!

  • dude! gotta love the lyrics! XD

  • the middle part sounds awesome with keyboards

  • Not perfect... but ok. Not metal enough.

  • audio only? you do know there arent lyrics for this song right?

  • @DedBassPlayer Yea as you can hear there's no lyrics. But can you see any video?? No.

  • This is played so much slower then the Metallica version. One of the best songs ever regardless

  • it would be hilarious to see metalicca try to cover a dt song hahahahha the drums would fuck up every ten seconds and the leads wouldnt come close

  • Go to "show more" and see the tags... it's like the best band ever.

  • The only good part in this song is the piano. Everything else is garbage.

  • @bl00dr3dxxx Deliberately and repeatedly dropped on your head as a baby.

  • best drummers....

  • better guitar- Tie

    better bass- Metallica

    better drums- DT

  • @pumishumi Metallica indeed has a better bass sound, but John is a better player than Rob. Maybe Cliff would win these days if he was still alive. Great cover, DT is one of my favorite bands. (:

  • @pumishumi Not really. As awesome metallica was (before load), DT has much more talented players. No matter which one you like best.

  • @guugeli169 i agree with you, but i was just reffering to overall sound, and it was just my opinion. also, i like load and everything after, unlike most people. actually, i dont even like And justice for all

  • @guugeli169 idk i think cliff was a bit more tallented..

  • @chrisslipknt444 john myung > cliff burton... just my opinion.

  • @JThrashYT in my opinion, everyone in dream theater is more tallented... but cliff lol

  • @chrisslipknt444 Barring Geezer Butler, Cliff Burton was the greatest bassist.

  • @JThrashYT the boot are great bassists

  • @MrHacklolo Love your opinion... I would even go as far as to say that they're both the prodigious backbones of two of the greatest bands in history. RIP Cliff Burton. Long Live John Myung.

  • If you listen carefully to the machine gun part of this song at 2:25 onwards you will notice that Dreamtheatre are missing some beats. Its not quite mechanically perfect..... and for this to be a good cover it needs to be 100% precise the way Kirk Hammet would play it.

  • @Stealthkeys77 Bullcrap. It just needs to be good.

  • @Stealthkeys77 If you notice they're not missing beats, he play a sightly diferent riff, instead of playing the same note all the time he does some pull off's after each Chord.

  • @Stealthkeys77 Please don't talk about DT not being mechanically perfect, they played this live with little rehursal. Listen to a song like "dance of eternity" by dream theater and tell me if metallica could cover it, answer.....NO! Dream theater has made a career of being mechanically perfect. For example, orian changes it's time signature i think like six times. "Dance of eternity" changes its time signature around 50 times just in the last verse of the song. Hammet isnt even close to petrucci

  • @XXblacktoothgrinXX I think Dance of Eternity changes time a total of like 110 times (over the whole song) or some ridiculous number like that...and unfortunately Dream Theater would probably be more popular if they'd lay off on hte progressiveness because most people aren't willing to devote the time to understand a song the way Dream Theater songs demand to be understood.

  • @retriever7746and2 Yeah that's true, but that's what makes it so much more personal to the DT fans. They have still built a huge fan base just by doing what they do. We'll see what happens now that their heart is gone, being mike portnoy.

  • Mike fucking Portnoy on drums!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • In my opinion not even close to metallica, too slow pace drums and very thin sounding

  • arrogant cover.

    No emotion.

    Horrible drum sound.

    original's better.

  • @miaoudzilla naaa yo te mato >:( pero son gustos yo amo este cover y pienso que dream teather es una de las pocas bandas que puede llegar a hacer un cover aceptable

  • God bless Dream Theater. God bless Metallica.

  • @mcard1d God bless Donald Trump! Thank you... You are welcome.

  • @mcard1d Dave Mustaine: Ok, I will :D

  • @mcard1d Darwin bless religius downies

  • hey guys do you remember where were you 20 years a go ??? This guys performed these songs in those years... and if still someone plays their songs be sure there is a quality in it... DT played more than 30 metallica songs and this shows that metallica inspirate them a lot... stop talking bullocks in your unsocial rooms.........

  • why the fuck you hate metallica so much ??? All of you guys ... You have to realise that metallica plays a lot different style of music from the gods of progressive metal dream theater. And seeing DT covering the master of puppets albums just shows to all of you out there how much DT loves this album and how much inspiration the have taken from it. So please stop arguing ridicilously...

  • @131james131 No... not even close ...but u can keep thinking that if u want... btw get of of this bands nuts

  • since it doesnt sound any good, why are we talkin about skill

  • yeah Dream theater is on pantera's level of power... this is live and sounds better than metallica's album version, no disrespect to cliff burton he is amazing.

  • Gotta love these old Dream Theater bootlegs... its too bad that Portnoy was half asleep doing the drumbeat. DT+ Metallica... good combo.

  • Beautiful. As expected of Dream Theatre, they do this song much respect. RIP Cliff

  • ma penca q la cresta el cober, ni la banda puede igualar a metallica ni el bajista puede igualar a burton

  • Screw skill, we want feel... DT fanboys....

(although i really like this cover :p)

  • @termi21 Which is why I like Dream Theater. They focus more on the melody, not just on the skill like some other progressive/metal bands.

  • me gustó mas el cover q hace mastodon

  • love it!!

  • Ever so slightly too slow. Awesome though.

  • daaym portnoy is perfect for metallica

  • too slow, but still good for a cover.

  • Damn, Petrucci (or his sound guy) knows the secret to one of the greatest guitar sounds of all time!

  • i like it but its too slow for me

  • Very good cover, despite it sounding like they're just having fun. Even though it's very good, it just goes to show how awesome, and talented the almighty Cliff Burton really was.

  • Very cool!

  • typical rectifier tone

  • Omg my two favorite bands of all time. Rock on Hetfield, LaBrie, Hammet, Burton, Myung, Petrucci, Ulrich, Rudess, Portnoy!!!!

  • Dream Theater is a worthy band to cover Metallica's Orion

  • @cachuflin69 more then that

  • @cachuflin69 you mean metallica is worthy enough for dream theater to cover them

  • @ownationthunder Their album master of puppets and the song orion are metallica's masterpieces :T

  • @cachuflin69 yes and dream theater is a master piece it self, so epic album, epic band, case closed :D

  • @ownationthunder

    Uh lol.

  • Bas solo was awesome, Cliff would be proud

  • Everyone should start writing this after their comment (I'll use Schwartzdying's comment as an example):

DT > Metallica (IN MY OPINION).

  • @directorc1 Because that's true dude :P

  • DT>Metallica

  • @Schwartzdying Fact.

  • @Fucklesticks Thanks lol

  • @Schwartzdying i wound go as far to say that. but i feel both bands are good in the different things they do. amd thats why i love both with the same respect. the epicness of the two are freaken amazing lol.

  • @ramnarainy Agree, but i told that just because i like more DT than Metallica

  • @ramnarainy Sorry. However, I like Metallica too :)

  • @gogyofuin27

Hey man I respect your opinion, but I don't think you should compare them.

They are very different, the original is practically always better because of the feel.

But to say the least DT IS insanely technical in what they do, Metallica has the classical vibe :). Oh well, at least you listen to rock and metal :)

  • When I first heard this from a song download I never thought it was a live cover since it sounds so good .

  • This version is good, but lets face the facts. Technically better than Metallica? No chance in hell. Its a much slower version, simply because DT cant play as fast because they arent as good. Petrucci is a beast but he is in fact the entire band.

  • @gogyofuin27 lol can't play as fast? lol what DT songs have you heard kid?

  • @gogyofuin27 you know shit about music

  • Ah, Dreamtheater fans, you never fail to bash Metallica. If it wasn't for Petrucci, there would be NO reason to listen to Dreamtheater anymore. Their vocalist is embarrasing, quite frankly. BTW, playing "technically" better than someone else doesn't mean they sound better, that all boils down to opinion.

And one more thing, to the wise guy in the top comments, there are TWO guitars in this song, not three. You would know this with just a little common sense.

  • @directorc1

It would take even less common sense to work out that bass guitar is infact, a guitar!

And that thing about Petrucci being the only reason to listen to DT? Bullshit. When they write, they write as a team and they compose some brilliant stuff that way. Petrucci doesn't carry Dream Theater, and it's very narrow minded to listen to a band just for the guitar.

  • @directorc1 just because James doesn't sing low and doesn't mean he's not a good singer, I actually wish more singers sound like him, and they don't always play "technically" they can unlike most other bands, and actually some people obviously enjoy but they do have songs that aren't like that if you listen to them, but you are right it is opinion.

  • More certain and technicly better playing than Metallica

  • if this is alive... they play way better orion live than metallica.

  • Comment removed

  • dream theater...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Comment removed

  • True skill comes from writing this shit, not from covering it. Enough said.

  • Comment removed

  • @directorc1 Excuse me? Are you saying that Metallica are more skilled than Dream Theater? :)) You have no clue what "skill" means, don't you?

  • @VladKV2 I know exactly what true skill is. I'll admit, I love John Petrucci, but I don't care about the rest of the band. BTW, yes, skill comes from composition, not covers.

And also, it's Metallica IS, not Metallica ARE.

  • @directorc1 Of course it comes from composition! Dream Theater has amazing songs that are way better than Metallica's. They did this cover as a tribute, pretty sure in 9 minutes and 22 seconds they knew how to play it because of how simple this song is for them. And also, I wanted to say "The guys from Metallica ARE".

  • @VladKV2 If you were saying GUYS, then ARE would be the appropriate response. But you didn't. You just said Metallica, which is treated as a singular noun. Therefore IS = correct response. ANYWAYS, I do like some of their songs, and never said they weren't good at composing stuff. Dream Theater has stated in multiple interviews they were heavily inspired by Metallica, so you have to give them credit. It doesn't matter, we won't reach a conclusion, we both have very different opinions obviously.

  • I used to like most of the DT fans, now I've changed my mind

  • @potatoes977 I totally agree.

  • I honestly don't think Cliff Burton was the best bassist ever. He was very talented, don't get me wrong, and he did make many, should I say, masterpieces. But I just don't think he's the greatest

  • Solo was rather sloppy,i'd expect better from Petrucci.

  • @Videostar1another1fa

One thing I will say as a seasoned guitarist, in petrucci's defense, when you don't suck it is kind of tough to emulate someone who sucks.

I have trouble playing metallica solos because they're either terribly easy, sloppy or lack any kind of technique, to the point where I'm incapable of playing that poorly anymore.

  • @theblacklvlage I didn't say he is bad, like Kirk isn't bad either. You can't play Metallica's solos because they are harder than they look, not because they are bad,you lack the technical ability to play them, and try to blame Kirk.I am a bassist,so I don't know stuff about solos, but I can see when the fretwork is hard, and I tell you,Blackened is a goddamn nightmare.

  • @Videostar1another1fa

OMG that is the funniest thing i've heard in quite some time. hahaha

Listen, beginner, go listen to Rob Marcello, Jeff Loomis, Tosin Abasi, Emil Werstler, that is the kind of stuff I play.

The garbage solos hammett plays (IE Sloppy pentatonic runs up and down the fretboard) are a joke. Haha

"Blackened is a nightmare" hahaha oh man... such a beginner. I remember 10 years ago when I was a beginner and I thought Blackened was tough too. But then I grew up and got Good.

  • @theblacklvlage Dude I've only been playing for a year and a half and Kirk's solos are still garbage to me. can do them without even trying. So I completely agree, I kind of feel bad for Petrucci since he is so talented that he practically has to dumb himself down. However, the centerpiece of the song is Burton, and honestly even though they are different genres I'd say Myung and Burton are around the same tier at what they do

  • @crazybirddude121

I would maybe agree with that. But, yeah, you're practically forgetting how to play "bad" (IE kirk hammett) after 1 1/2 years, I'm at like 11 or something years, I forgot how to suck like kirk hammett years ago.

  • @crazybirddude121 YES! Kirk, along with slash wylde and all those other chromatic shredders are so overrated! People hail them as gods though for some reason, its ridiculous.

  • very good cover!!!!!

  • Well no one can play the bass like CLIFF!! so ill say nice try.

  • If anyone here is here to bag metallica, you clearly don't have much of a life.. and instead of listening and commenting on bands you DO like, you come here and try and piss people off by bagging their favourite band..

Do you really think some pis weak little cunt is going to put me off metallica because he says "they suck! waahh!" well, sorry to say, but you can get a dog up you.

    BIRTH, SCHOOL, METALLICA, DEATH.... CUNTS!

  • @TheNecrosisx Wrong.... METALLICA, BIRTH, METALLICA, (FUCK) SCHOOL, METALLICA, METALLICA, METALLICA, DEATH... CUNTS!!! Of course not just Metallica, there are so many kickass bands out there! cheers

  • If anyone here says Metallica.sucks... First off, remember that Dream Theater obviously doesn't think so, as they're paying homage to them. Second off, though their technical skills aren't very good, their vocals, their melodies, and their good use of distortion are what set them aside from other metal bands.

  • @TheEvilYoshiKiller Technical skills not very good?I'm sorry, but Cliff was the best bassist ever(and this is coming from a bassist),Lars, although not that great is still a vital rhythm part,James is probably the greatest rhythm guitar player in metal, and Kirk, particularly in his thrash metal time, before developing the wah-wah syndrome was great. So learn your facts.

  • @Videostar1another1fa True. My bad. I accidentally insulted my favorite band. Please forgive me.

  • @Videostar1another1fa

"Coming from a bassist" You must suck rofl.

Go listen to Franck Hermanny or even better yet, Billy Sheehan haha.

Cliff Burton's fingers would fall off if he tried to play like them (Granted if he didnt die)

  • @Videostar1another1fa

"Coming from a bassist" You must suck rofl.

Go listen to Franck Hermanny or even better yet, Billy Sheehan haha.

Cliff Burton's fingers would fall off if he tried to play like them (Granted if he didnt die)

Oh, and coming from a guitarist- James and Kirk suck, terribly. very terribly.

  • I'd love to see Metallica cover a DT song... Octavarium? In The Presence of Enemies? LMAO

  • @FtKiVeR hahaha yeah id pay my soul to hear that.

  • @FtKiVeR

Kirk would die if he tried to play a fast petrucci solo, lars would get confused and his head would explode, james can't whine loud enough, that monkey who holds the bass guitar in their band now, he would probably get bored and throw his feces at people.

  • @metalguitarist69 ,,and of course you the shit head

  • @metalguitarist69 Metallica are overrated?Go listen to Lady Gaga my friend...

  • @kostasmetal13 or justin beeber. but im saying that as a metal band metallica is pretty overrated,

  • @metalguitarist69

Are you, by any chance, high right now?

  • @FilipTheGreat yeahhh very

  • AWESOME IT'S PERFECT

  • Is this version made by Metalica?

  • @nttrungftu1980 no, its dream theaters version of metallica's song thus the "cover" metalguitarist69 is a blasphemer! If you own and think you can play the guitar, sell the guitar to someone who appreciates real fucking music and go enjoy your fucking justin bieber you faggot!

  • robo guitarist my friend do not slag off bullet they are not emo ffs. but i agree with ur comment about my chemical romance. bullet are metal u want an emo band listen to bring me the horizon...

  • Eh Dream Theater is overrated. So is Metallica.

  • @Demonman26 overrated? what do you listen to?pussy emo bands? bullet for my valentine perhaps or my chemical romance???
