  • On my Mazda 3 the idle tensioner made that sound. Its a 200 dollar part. My xd is making a gravel like sound probably the water pump.

  • it doesn't sound that bad

  • That fucking water pump grinded its way into my fuckin engine block......

  • @Keithahfua that sounds like a blown head gasket dies a lot of white smoke come out the tail pipe

  • I have a scion xD with about 24000 miles. Just took it to the dealer cause i heard this grinding noise and my car would shake a little if it was in park...anyways...found out it was the water pump. It was under warranty so that was good. I was driving the car without problems for about a month or so...just got tired of the noise...

  • I was driving in the front of the store about 2mph, and i heard something like my car is really low and scrap the bottom, then sec. later, smoke start comming from under my hood.and antifreeze started to pooring down. do i need to change the water pump or what?i don't drive my car anymore.i pulled it from the store to my house.the car still working, the engine still good, just i don't know what's wrong with it. thank you guys for taking your time and read this. is that mean it's a water pump?

  • I am a chevrolet person however, I couldn't find that chevrolet I was looking for in my price range so I recently purchased a 2004 sport trac xlt 4x4, I used to drive a 2007 model at my old job and hated it but mine looks and drives much different and I love mine, it had all the options I was looking for. My boyfriend recently replaced the thermostat and I was still loosing water.Today it kept cutting off on me and the 4th time it made a winding noise and now will not crank but will turn over?

  • Did this by any chance make your car judder whilst driving? I'm having a similar problem with my car but it's running terribly

  • i got a honda city 2005 idsi..!! i will upload its engine sound then can u tell which strange sound comes from it!!

  • nice little kitten

  • my freaken 2000 suburban just did this yesterday

  • so does the water pump come with the new pulley too?

  • @sctflasher379 No just the pump and gasket.

  • @365motorwerks So to stop that sound, because my car is doing the same thing. do i just replace the water pump??

  • @sctflasher379 You could, I verified that it was the water pump by removing the belt that drives it and starting the engine the noise went away completely. Once the belt is off you can turn the pulleys by hand and see it there is grinding or free play same goes for any of the other engine accessories.

  • @sctflasher379 pulley comes off the old one and on to the new one.

  • Hey done mine last week along with timing belt kit. your video helped me diagnose that awful sound, thanks.... mine Huummmms like new now too!

  • how many miles you got on that engine?

  • @jango1968 I swapped engines at 209,000 and the one I put in had the bad pump but unknown miles. First engine never had any issues with a pump.

  • Did you notice any over heating?

  • @AnfinnChr No the pump was still working the bearing was just starting to go.

  • really helpful! Thanks!!

  • You got it! I should have done a how-to replace one as well huh?!

  • I think i have the same nosie, need to check out that Pump then.

  • @igorg003 im starting to get leaks but just last week i started hearing low "clunking" noises in the timing belt housing, that's when i start the engine cold, after few seconds it's gone. my mechanic said the timing belt is loose and beating on the cover. i doubt it. ..will be replacing belt and pump this weekend. yay

  • samething happend on my TC

its at the dealership (to stay in warrenty) ALL DAY TODAY

(2 hour job...that takes all day)

aren't water pumps supposed to last atleaste 75,000 miles or so? lol sucks

  • First one lasted 209,000 miles! But yeah if there is a bad batch of parts or if your belt is to tight it can wear out prematurely.

  • one way to pin point where the noise is coming from is to use a plastic hose just like a doctor do , one end goes near your ear the other where you suspect the noise comes from. MAKE SURE not to touch anithing is moving or hot

  • i have the exact same noise but when i press down on my clutch the noise goes away... i let go and it comes back

  • That sounds like a bad throwout bearing or one of the fingers on the plates touching something.

  • I have the same issue right now! Thank you so much for the instructions and video!

  • Glad it explained it! Buy a genuine part and save time on a repeat failure, I cheaped it out and had to do it a second time!
