Lateralus is the first record which surpasses human emotions as a main topic of song writing, with The Grudge being the only song on the album bout a human feeling.

No it isn't. Not even close. Wings for Marie and 10000 days take place at his mothers funeral as he reflects on her life and how it impacted his own. His mother suffered from an aneurism for 27 years (10000 days). And if it wasn't for his mother dying he would have lost a lot of his inspirations for a lot of his music.

This song Pt.1 and 2 is a beautiful to his mother, very heartfelt and emotional. This song to me not only shows the torment he has gone through over the death of his mother but also the inner divide he has when it comes to the belief in god. He seems to be pleading for her to find salvation: "Shake your fist at the gates saying, I have come home now! "
