Children are intimately aware they can push a parent's buttons. It is a very personal relationship. Parents take the misbehaviour personally. Would we react like that if we were trying to train a monkey? No. We'd try to learn how to do it and be consistent enough to get positive results.
I used the choice method 31 years ago with my daughter and it worked perfectly. If they fail you are there to say, what choice could you have chosen which would have given you a better outcome? No stress.
Pretty simple approach, intellectually speaking. Good analogy about the monkey. If we take their (mis)behavior personally, what does that say about us?
Glad that approach worked for you. Here's hoping I can keep my cool. My 4 month old is, well, not exactly able to be easily reasoned with, but I'm learning.
