Apollo 17 took some shots of earth in the lunar sky above the American flag. It looks the same size as the moon in earth's sky. However, the earth in moon sky should be 4 times bigger than the moon in earth sky. Just look at any website with models of the two beside one another. There's a huge difference! The shots of earth from the liner orbiters have no reference point, so these don't count. The earth in moon sky is way too small in all the Apollo photos.

The reason for the dust-up is due to the engine when the LEM landed. The reason why the flag moved was due to the lack of air-resistance, any movement of the pole would make the flag move, and move longer than on earth.

The expectation of having a blast crater under the LM is flawed. The DC-X was a test flight program of a vertical takeoff and landing rocket. On one of its last flights, it made an emergency landing outside of the pad area. Despite the hydrogen/oxygen engine producing a thrust of some 60,000 pounds (about 20 times the thrust of the LM descent engine!), the engine produced a mark on the desert floor that was barely recognizable.

... basically everywhere where you hear Houston ask a question or give information and Eagle responds to that specific statement or request. Other places they were talking over each other, probably partly due to the delay causing them to not know when the other was talking.

@7071t6 The largest debris left behind by Apollo is only 9 metres across.The LRO and Japanese JAXA probe images,although small,clearly show the landing sites.They`re on utube under "ultra close up Apollo 11".Apollo brought back 840 pounds of moon rock.1000s of geologists from museums,universities etc have studied the samples.They have been compared with the small samples returned by the soviet LUNA probe.Is it likely all these people have been "fooled" for 40 yrs.Why didnt the USSR expose it?
@7071t6 The reason why the LRO didn't provide clearer pictures of the sites was due to that the orbiter HADN'T BEEN PLACED IN ITS FINAL ORBIT yet.. It is now, and they will be snapping new pictures of the sites.

I haven't the energy to plot the solution to the orbit equations, but thankfully Apollo 11's translunar trajectory is traced on Robert A. Braeunig's web page and the july 22 photo seems possible. Now look at nasa photo AS11-44-6689. They are at the moon on july 20, and we know earth is at more than half phase. But this photo shows a crescent phase. This can't be right.

The Apollo Trans-Lunar and Trans-Earth trajectories crossed over each other to take the spacecraft towards the "eastern" limb of the destination body (Moon or Earth) - think of the figure 8 used in the Apollo 8 mission badge? When picture AS11-44-6689 was taken, the spacecraft must have been crossing towards the nightside limb of Earth. So they saw a crescent instead of "more than half phase".

you'll see a picture of a full moon taken by buzz and the boys on july 22, on their return to earth. According to my resources, the moon was only slightly past half phase on that date.

Well I'm no expert in this area and that report referenced by nesokretep looks a little "heavy" for a quick appraisal :-). However I'm sure he's nailed the answer there. It might not be conclusive for you, but he's certainly right about the trajectory not being a straight line (like that of ALL spacecraft). The Apollo CSM would accelerate from lunar orbit onto a trajectory that would curve it around gradually back towards the earth.
Maybe the US Postal Service can say if it was based on an actual NASA photo. One other point. On July 20, 1969, the moon was in crescent phase, between first quarter and half phase. That means the sun wouldn't have risen at Tranquility Base for another week. NASA has always said that no artificial light sources were taken to the moon. There was no room in the capsule. So how were they able to take all those gorgeous sunlit pictures in the dark?
@randman1111 Hmmm.....If you check I think you'll find it was 2 days before a half-moon (waxing) - so local dawn at Tranquility Base (it is somewhat to the east/right of the centre of the face towards earth). The length of their shadows does appear to conform with that.
@eventcone There are examples of this photo everywhere. Just search "buzz lem ladder" under google images. Some of 'em are cropped to exclude the earth(hmmmm...I wonder why) but the original with earth is there. I remember this photo because it was plastered on the cover of half of the newspapers in the world. In fact, there is a U.S. stamp from 1977 celebrating the first man on the moon which s this photo INCLUDING EARTH NEAR THE HORIZON1

On the 2nd page of Googled links I found a site called echoesofapollo. The photo is there. It appears to me to be a composite (not the original) as you can see the earth sits within a rectangular shape as if pasted in. Also I don't think the earth night side accords with the LEM shadow.
Does anyone know the story behind this photograph?
@randman1111 On further inspection the photo shows further signs of having been "doctored" from the original. You say that other versions of this had been cropped to exclude the Earth, but I think that those versions are the ENTIRE original. Someone has added a whole extra portion to the left of the original and then added the Earth on top. You can see a change in colour at the "join" and the LEM shadow suddenly terminates at the join. Compare with the original AS11-40-5868 at apolloarchive.
Also, there is that NASA photo of buzz coming down the lem ladder with old mother earth in the background close to the horizon. But as I just demonstrated it should be at a fixed position high in the lunar sky from the Apollo 11 landing site.
@randman1111 Just had a look at that photo. NO SIGN of the earth. But other photos do show the Earth high in the sky. If you saw such a picture it must be from another mission.
Since the moon is gravitationally bound to earth it keeps one side continually facing the earth. Technically, it rotates at the same rate it revolves about the earth. This means that the earth is in a fixed position in the lunar sky depending upon where you are on the lunar surface. From the sea of tranquillity it would be high in the sky, a huge blue object slowly rotating ( almost one full rotation in the 21 hours they were on the surface ). So why no mention of such an incredible sight? Also

I watched this live and turned blue doing it when I was 14. When Neil said "The Eagle has Landed" there was thunderous applause coming over the TV. I don't know if it was Huston or the news room but it was thrilling. Anyone who thinks this was faked has the right to think so. Consider this... Eventually someone is going to make it back to the moon be it next year or 50 years but whoever does this will confirm the 1969 landing. If it was faked, the US would be a laughing stock at best.

A faked moon landing would have had a blast crater and starry background, because that's what people expected to see. However, the lunar soil turned out to be harder than expected and it reflected far more sunlight than expected, so... no stars.

The shots of earth from the liner orbiters have no reference point, so these don't count. The earth in moon sky is way too small in all the Apollo photos.

The reason for the dust-up is due to the engine when the LEM landed. The reason why the flag moved was due to the lack of air-resistance, any movement of the pole would make the flag move, and move longer than on earth.

The expectation of having a blast crater under the LM is flawed. The DC-X was a test flight program of a vertical takeoff and landing rocket. On one of its last flights, it made an emergency landing outside of the pad area. Despite the hydrogen/oxygen engine producing a thrust of some 60,000 pounds (about 20 times the thrust of the LM descent engine!), the engine produced a mark on the desert floor that was barely recognizable.

Ascent module mass = 10,000 pounds; thrust = 3,500 pounds; a=F/m; (go find a force calculator) acceleration before accounting for gravity = 11.3 feet/sec^2; then subtract acceleration due to gravity of 5.3 feet/sec^2;
So if accelerated up at a rate of 6 feet/sec^2 (meaining it goes upwards 6 feet per second faster for every second that it flies.)

@7071t6 The largest debris left behind by Apollo is only 9 metres across.The LRO and Japanese JAXA probe images,although small,clearly show the landing sites.They`re on utube under "ultra close up Apollo 11".Apollo brought back 840 pounds of moon rock.1000s of geologists from museums,universities etc have studied the samples.They have been compared with the small samples returned by the soviet LUNA probe.Is it likely all these people have been "fooled" for 40 yrs.Why didnt the USSR expose it?

I haven't the energy to plot the solution to the orbit equations, but thankfully Apollo 11's translunar trajectory is traced on Robert A. Braeunig's web page and the july 22 photo seems possible. Now look at nasa photo AS11-44-6689. They are at the moon on july 20, and we know earth is at more than half phase. But this photo shows a crescent phase. This can't be right.

The Apollo Trans-Lunar and Trans-Earth trajectories crossed over each other to take the spacecraft towards the "eastern" limb of the destination body (Moon or Earth) - think of the figure 8 used in the Apollo 8 mission badge? When picture AS11-44-6689 was taken, the spacecraft must have been crossing towards the nightside limb of Earth. So they saw a crescent instead of "more than half phase".

Well I'm no expert in this area and that report referenced by nesokretep looks a little "heavy" for a quick appraisal :-). However I'm sure he's nailed the answer there. It might not be conclusive for you, but he's certainly right about the trajectory not being a straight line (like that of ALL spacecraft). The Apollo CSM would accelerate from lunar orbit onto a trajectory that would curve it around gradually back towards the earth.

Maybe the US Postal Service can say if it was based on an actual NASA photo. One other point. On July 20, 1969, the moon was in crescent phase, between first quarter and half phase. That means the sun wouldn't have risen at Tranquility Base for another week. NASA has always said that no artificial light sources were taken to the moon. There was no room in the capsule. So how were they able to take all those gorgeous sunlit pictures in the dark?

Some of 'em are cropped to exclude the earth(hmmmm...I wonder why) but the original with earth is there. I remember this photo because it was plastered on the cover of half of the newspapers in the world. On the 2nd page of Googled links I found a site called echoesofapollo. The photo is there. It appears to me to be a composite (not the original) as you can see the earth sits within a rectangular shape as if pasted in. Also I don't think the earth night side accords with the LEM shadow.
Does anyone know the story behind this photograph?

@randman1111 On further inspection the photo shows further signs of having been "doctored" from the original. You say that other versions of this had been cropped to exclude the Earth, but I think that those versions are the ENTIRE original. Someone has added a whole extra portion to the left of the original and then added the Earth on top. You can see a change in colour at the "join" and the LEM shadow suddenly terminates at the join. Compare with the original AS11-40-5868 at apolloarchive.

Since the moon is gravitationally bound to earth it keeps one side continually facing the earth. Technically, it rotates at the same rate it revolves about the earth. This means that the earth is in a fixed position in the lunar sky depending upon where you are on the lunar surface. From the sea of tranquillity it would be high in the sky, a huge blue object slowly rotating ( almost one full rotation in the 21 hours they were on the surface ). So why no mention of such an incredible sight? Also

I watched this live and turned blue doing it when I was 14. When Neil said "The Eagle has Landed" there was thunderous applause coming over the TV. I don't know if it was Huston or the news room but it was thrilling. Anyone who thinks this was faked has the right to think so. Consider this... Eventually someone is going to make it back to the moon be it next year or 50 years but whoever does this will confirm the 1969 landing. If it was faked, the US would be a laughing stock at best.

I am amazed how people keep going on and on that this was faked.
1) So they faked it multiple times? There was MORE than one moon landing.
2) They faked the Apollo near disaster for what reason?
3) With all of the countries sending probes and the way imaging software is don't you think someone would have gone looking for the flag and moon buggy? It all got left behind.
People need to do something productive with their free time then go looking for conspirarcy.

A faked moon landing would have had a blast crater and starry background, because that's what people expected to see. However, the lunar soil turned out to be harder than expected and it reflected far more sunlight than expected, so... no stars.
