That awd car goes like a cat. And I mean like both the tractor & 4-legged miaow. A6 or A8, they're good to go on bad surfaces. I'll have mine with Quattro-drive, please.
The cable is not assisting the car. It also does not keep the car aligned. It is simply to keep the car from rolling backwards in the case it doesn't make it up. Similar to what mountain climbers use...same concept anyways.

It could not have been an A8,because they were trying to redo a stunt done with the Audi 100 quattro(the A6's ancestor).

You can see that its running on a cable, but suspect it's only there to keep the car aligned. If anyone can shed some light on this?

Well, put it this way.
What if, in the midst of running the incline, the car breaks down?
In that case, you have nowhere else to go but down.
Hence, the cable: it's a safety line meant to keep the driver from losing control in case of a failure.
