  • Where does this video comes from?

  • @HappyGuitarFellow This video is from a show that was on MTV in the 80s called "IRS's The Cutting Edge". It is a crime against pop culture that the show has never been released (to my knowledge) on DVD. Thanks cmanzan for posting.

  • He's one of those guys who talks, and you're like, "alight, okay", and then he sings and women swarm in trying to take off his pans.

  • jack white even copied dexter's skin tone.

  • @samthehiggins Jack White? Is he still dead?

  • Does anyone know how old he was when this footage was taken?

  • @mRtHeLaStWaLtZ dexter romweber was born in 1966 and this was recorded in 1985 so he must be 18 or 19 there :)

  • @jks2 I see... thanks man.

  • @mRtHeLaStWaLtZ Pretty sure he was 18. It was right before they moved to Athens, and I remember he was 18 when I first met him, which was that year.

  • were did the soul of rock go oh wait here it is!

  • I'm a little bit speechless. So incredibly weird and amazing.

  • Has the song performed in the end ever been recorded and released by Flat Duo Jets or is this the only capture of it?

  • This beats any episode of Cribs for sure.

  • Comment removed

  • he has on a Wild One had

  • i am just discovering this band, and i love them.

  • need a drummer , lets create yah YOU

  • this is what i imagine jack white being like if the white stripes never made it

  • Well jack totally gives up credit to these guys and son house, deservedly so.

  • @bucksausage from what I hear, this is actually the inspiration behind The White Stripes... ^_^

  • @bucksausage Yeah knowing that Jack is such a huge fan of these guy, his mystique and persona make alot more sense.

  • Does anyone know the chords to what he's playing here? I know it's a Buddy Holly song ("Girl On My Mind") but I can't find the chords.. I think I have it partially figured out, but if any more adept guitar players could set me straight, I'd really appreciate it. I just wanna rock a fraction of whats happening in this clip.

  • @MexicanHumanoid

I'm not near a guitar, but I think it's C(with added G)>Am>D>G. Repeat ad-nauseum with different rhythms and I think that's basically the song.

  • Thank you very much Dayyv. Much appreciated. This is my fav Flat Duo Jets song, even though it's short and a cover..

  • this is one of the coolest episodes of the cutting edge!

  • saw Dex and Sara last night at the White Mule in Columbia, SC. whatta show! talked briefly with Dex about Silvertone guitars, he is on #13. Sara is cool, we talked about WQDR-FM and a band called X-Teens. Rawk!

  • what song is he playing? i love it

  • I remember asking Dex about the Mausoleum at a show in '89....his response "it BURNED DOWN". Too bad. Still see him around here occasionally.

  • He's playing in Atlanta next week, with Sara on drums.

  • 3:42 on forward. No matter what you do with your life. It will never be as awesome as that! LONG LIVE DEX!

  • 0:55 and drinkin'beer ghehe that ain't true that ain't true!

  • I say tht line almost every day! Its hilarious!

  • He is the coolest guy ever.

  • awesome

  • haha Uncle Edgar right after he shows a picture of Frankenstein..awesome.

  • It's Herman and Lily Munster, not (quite) Frankenstein

  • That guy is awesome, I'd like to meet him.

  • acid.

alot of it. and a fine taste and appreciation for the american rock and roll.

  • " that aint true, that aint true"

    now thats comedy gold..

    rock On DEX

  • is he live in that place ????

  • Caught the Jets once what an experience. He is playing with his sister on drums now. Check him out he is the real deal!

  • If anyone can tell me the name of the song at the end, I will be very grateful.

  • "Girl on my Mind" by Buddy Holly.

  • You rule, thank you.

  • and he only got better overt he years. i saw him last week. best guitar player that ever existed as far as i care.

  • North Carolina is the greatest state ever. This state has produced so many great musicians: Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Gary Davis, Flat Duo Jets, Mojo Nixon, George Clinton, Unknown Hinson, John Coltane, Nina Simone, Doc Watson, the list goes on and on.

  • The craziest guy ever!!!

  • this is why i love youtube. i have never heard of the flat duo jets or dexter romweber. but through the magical world of the tube i have found them. and they are fucking outrageous.

  • same here man. i don't know how i found this amazing, brilliant, crap quality clip half a year ago, but it changed the course of my musical path. this low quality, shitty looking little video inspired me more than anything else i've heard in years. i want to rock like dexter romweber. loud, sharp and mothingfucking rock and roll - like it was originally intended.

  • What a crazy guy.Hes also really goddamn amazingly talented.

  • It'll be workin' soon...

    -CRASH-

  • "This is where I spend my time growing up."

    "And drinking beer."

    :D

  • God damn. I wish I could have grown up with a dude like that next door. We would have OWNED that neighborhood.

  • is that brian setzer narrating?

  • No it's Peter Zaremba from the Fleshtones. He was the host of "120 Minutes" on MTV back in the day...

  • oh damn...thank you

  • Peter Zaremba was actually the host of IRS's The Cutting Edge, which is where this clip came from. It aired on MTV on Sunday night before 120 Minutes

  • That's right...it was the Cutting Edge. Thanks, Bob.

  • What happened to MTV and this kind of amazing stuff?

    MTV lost their way somewhere...

  • It's like the White Stripes, but earlier.

  • .. and better?

    i love the white stripes.

  • you see where Jack got his look from. His solo style is also inspired by Dexter.

  • was "girl on my mind" ever recorded on any of their albums?

  • I'm pretty sure it wasn't. However, on safari the song cry baby sounds somewhat similar, sharing some lyrics.

  • blows buddy's version out of the sky.

  • how come this is about the only thing i can find on the flat duo jets?

there was another video posted , but its been removed.. whats the story here? Thanks

  • Search the documentary "Two Headed Cow".

    Dex is Great!

  • If you're talking about the crazy hazy kisses performance, it was removed because it is from the Athens GA Inside Out movie. They probably saw it and took it off because of copyright.

  • No matter how hard you might try, you will never be able to ingest as many drugs without dying as has D.R.

  • There's never gonna be a wildest rocker ever again...haha gotta love dex.

  • Just went to hear Dex live tonight- still rockin-

  • 3:44 Buddy cover like I've never heard before... better than the OG. I mean it. If there is anyone out there with a complete version like this, please post it! Nothing else out there sounds like this! Nothing ever will...

  • Beautiful piece.

  • DEXTER FUCKING RULES!!!!!! still rockin' today.

  • man i wish they had not split

  • Super! Good to see solid granite in the rock!

Thanks for keeping GRATE rock alive!

  • What song is it they are playing in this clip at the end?

  • buddy holly-girl on my mind

  • I saw them and the Rev in Chi-Town @ the Metro, I thought they would be bigger than the Rev. In some ways they still are.

  • Love Letters, baby! You rock!

  • wow i read about them reading a white stripes book

  • Dex,,

    I LOVE YOU MAN..!!

  • Extra, extra, read all about it! I saw this via a rented "cutting edge" compilation from my local video emporium, circa 1987. Early R.E.M., Jonathan Richman, etc. Great great stuff.

  • does anyone know why the letterman performance got yanked? it was sooooooo goood

  • I'm just SOOO PISSED that fantastic performance got yanked! :(

  • I saw this when it aired and remember being bewildered and fascinated at the same time. 20 years later I feel the same way. This kid is just astonishingly cool and funny. I love this clip.

  • This kind of clip is exactly why I love YouTube. I hadn't thought of FDJ in quite some time, looked them up here, and bam, this clip was first on the search. Thank you so much for posting this.

Dex and Crow stayed at my place once after a show opening for the Reverend Horton Heat, and they were good people. I'll always remember that, and shit like this brings back some great memories. Five stars for you cmanzan.
