Today is July 20, 2009: From what I see on a google search, the location is a retail "one dollar store."
From SUCH a hugely well known location due to the advertising.... to an unknown retail place. This is how life works. Things appear solid..... and then.... they're gone.
Yeh, thanks for posting this. I grew up in the Bay Area, and I remember this commercial (as many that are still burned into my brain) I was talking about this commercial at cocktail party with other ex-Bay Area-ites and nobody remembered. Especially the "get a bike" -- they all thought I was crazy. Now, all I need to do is find the version of the commecial where someone says "get a bike" in spanish. They still think I am crazy, more so about the spanish. They'll see, I'M NOT! :-)
Mike, I just uploaded a version of the Matthew's commercial that has a family saying "Get a bike!" in Spanish. It aired in December of 1987. I hope it's the one you're looking for!
DC native here!! They also used to get their customers drunk with FREE champagne AND popcorn....haha...it was the only electronic gig in town before CC and Good Guys...which eventually led to it closing down : (
Actually, the reason Mathew's closed down was because of the criminal charges filed against the owner.. last I knew.
His operation was a scam. You couldn't even walk in the front door alone.... you had to be escorted by your very own salesman.... who stayed with you :(
I just bought one of these bikes with all original parts at a thrift store here in Denver, CO for $9.99. Made a singlespeed out of her and she works like a champ!
Thanks for posting this. Only at Matthew's could you get a VCR, a food processor and a bike in one sitting. :)
Steven Matthew David (shop owner and the V.O. in the commercials) even had a promotion in 1981 in which the cost of gas you used for the trip to the store would be reimbursed even if you didn't buy anything. My, how times have changed.
It just means the top of the hill(which isn't even that steep) where Mission St. meets John Daly Boulevard on the Daly City/SF line. You go down John Daly to get to either Westlake Mall or the BART Station. I lived and still live just half about ten blocks away on Brunswick st.
HOLY SH@!!!! I haven't seen THIS commercial in TEARS. I remember when Matthews closed down, back in the early 90s. What is there now days? I used to live on Hillcrest about a block from the Bart Station (Back when Whites were allowed there).
So, what...did you get a free bike with purchase?

I like your humor.
John Madden, famous TV Football personality... grew up just down the hill from Matthews toward the BART station. About a 1/4 mile away.
He lives in the East Bay now... maybe that is where white people are allowed to live today?
