@AviatorNyx I am involved in taking delivery of a few B737-400 from Boeing fields in the 90's, such procedure was unheard of, it dangerous, I did took delivery of about 5 or 6 737, test flight was done before that final delivery flight and its normally done at a safe area not at Boeing Fields, Renton nor Everett.
One or more customer acceptance test flight will be done, but never like that.
The pilot got sacked because of that video. The bosses were ok with it, a bit angry but the South China Morning Post got hold of the video and one thing lead to another, and a pilot lost his job. It's not that dangerous by the way. Under a bridge or doing it near a school then yes, but this was at Boeing's test facility in Washington, an area in which if a plane crashed it would be in a contained area.

The 777 indeed is an impressive plane. It's the first plane totally designed using computer aided design or CAD, no blueprint. It has the biggest engines and landing wheels. I just feel more secure when I'm in a 777 !
Remember, kiddos: when Airbus did this maneuver, their gear was down and the autopilot was flying the plane...right into a forest. There's reasons why you'll never pull pilots out of the cockpit, ever...and this is one of them. That's one damn good pilot in that 777-300ER. Furthermore, this video further demonstrates that Airbus sucks.
@SenorSpode Bullshit. Autopilot wasnt even on when this manouver was done and both pilots were manually flying the plane. They made an error, they were too slow and low, they tried to pull up too late which would have resulted to stall, but Airbus computer prevented them from doing so and plane "landed" to the forest.
In same situation Boeing would have crashed too, you just cant pull up from that speed without stalling, Boeing would have stalled to the forest.
@Pvjinflight Funny...why do all the documentaries on the incident state emphatically that the pilots tried to fight the plane's computer to get out of the situation? FADEC requires no pilot input, hence the acronym...all that's left is autopilot. I bet you think the Q400 is prone to landing gear failures, too. Have a nice day.
@SenorSpode At least Air Crash Investigation show says that reason of accident was pilot error, and he was given some jail time after that. Search Pilot VS Plane and watch whole document, and you will see that.
The official report states the causes of the accident were: * Very low flyover height, lower than surrounding obstacles. * Very low speed, reduced to reach maximum possible angle of attack. * Engines idling during flight. * Late application of go-around power=Pilot error
@SenorSpode So basically pilots who had manual control at the time of that manouver let aircraft to descend to 30 ft when they should be in 100ft. When they tried to climb they were too near the forest with too small speed, and Airbus computer prevented them from pulling nose up because result would have been stall, without that they would have simply stalled to the forest, which is not any better.
Thats why its pilot VS plane, and plane did what it was supposed to do.
@yoyoyoyoshua the thing is nobody knows you or your step dad so why do you think anyone is interested in weather he works on the 777? i appreciate it means something to you but it means nothing to anyone else as we all know that hundersd of people work on the 777 and many of them probably have step sons. Why do people feel the need to inform the rest of the world about stuff that is only relevant to them and that nobody cares about
On October 26, 1958 Boeing's Chief Test Pilot A.M. "Tex" Johnston flying the model 367-80, known by its designers as the Dash 80, roars over Lake Washington at 400 feet and 400 knots. The graceful swept-wing prototype airliner pitches up, rolls inverted and then upright, amazing the thousands of spectators that have come to see the 1955 Seafair Gold Cup hydroplane races.
I think this situation sucks. As PIC and as a senior, experienced pilot, he should (and obviously thought he did) have the authority to fly this type of maneuver. Being captain is supposed to mean something I reckon - there are too many situations where authority is being eroded and power is being concentrated too centrally - teachers, doctors, police - they are getting second-guessed too much because some have screwed up spectacularly - a new law for every innovative loser is not the answer!
if you think this is dangerous, you must know nothing about aviation and just blurt shit out. Honestly, why is this dangerous? He was over a runway, over airport field, and probably had clearance from the tower to land, so wheres the danger? Planes, even the ones you're on, do this all the time every day on every flight, except they have there wheels down and actually contact the ground. If you're a pilot, and UNABLE to do this, you should be sacked.
Airbus is better? HAH Thats funny, how many Boeing aircraft have gone in the drink in the past year? Airbus garbage faulty air speed indicators, who wants to fly a large transport aircraft with a joy stick, all large aircraft should have a yoke.
was only in trouble due to lack of clearences, questions were asked when the vid hit youtube. many companies do a pass on delivery of an important aeroplane (like the 50th 747-400 or the first of a certain type)
Boeing was cool, I believe. I think they do it even more regularly than you suggest - I think this was a Cathay thing. I like risk aversion in my airlines but this is silly - as a pilot and enthusiast it has and will affect my travel decisions. Plus people around me seek my opinion on aviation related stuff and given that there has been no suggestion of a pattern of dangerous behaviour etc, I have been telling people that Cathay is on the nose.
How is this any more dangerous than doing a touch and go? He has more airspeed and has two very large engines to play with if one fails. Also, what makes you think that the actions of one pilot in an airline with over 1000 pilots is representative of the other pilots? Why do you say that their safety is on the nose? Go to wiki and find that there were 2 incidents in their history that were their fault, one in 1949 in poor weather and one in 67 when 1 person died in a convair in appaling weather
post 2. Then look at Quantas, supposedly the safest airline. 2 incidents in 2008, possibly due to poor maintainence and another indecent when they landed in a golf course, due to stupid piloting. So when you look at that pattern do you actually believe that cathay pacific airways is unsafe? If you do, you might as well fly with Garuda.
777-300 is newer than the base model 777-200. But this is the 777-300ER which is even newer than those two previous models. However, i think that the a380 is newer than the 777-300ER by 1 year: the a380 first flight was in 2005 whereas the -300ER was going in 2004. However, the newest Boeing is the 777-200LR which flies farther than the aircraft seen in this video and the a380. It first flew also in 2005.
