"when i saw you for the first time, i'd never thought that this could be, i'd never thought you come my way, i never thought i hear you say, come dance with me!
so beautiful this line and karen's beautiful rendering tender and yearning at the same time! is it gets me every time!
This is a classic example of Karen's later years "lighter" voice. Although smooth as butter, it lacks the deep richness of, say, Superstar (my all time favorite from them). Her voice hear sounds airy, and there is a warble in some of her vocals, which she never did on early albums. Maybe it's me, but the songs they did from 1976 on lacked the classic punch of Rainy Days, etc. Richard's production here sounds more like elevator music.
I have been saying this for years and many C's fans have been pretty pissed about the observation. But I completely agree with you. Karen sounded great through the Horizon album and then her voice changed year by year.
@greenwich1754 i agree with you. i miss the deep, rich part of k's voice in her later work. however, i believe that this song isn't meant to b sung with that depth. still, definitely not her best. 2 me, in the early years of her career, maybe b4 '70, her voice was too deep for my taste; then in the late '70s and forward, it was too light and airy for my taste; and in between those 2 periods, she was at her absolute best; she seemed to balance the low notes and the high notes perfectly.
@No1KCfan6 Exactly. She showed the best of her vocal excellence on songs like "Please Mr. Postman", "Top of the World", and "There's a Kind of Hush". Lyrically, not the greatest songs, but voice-wise they were fantastic and revealed Karen's best talents.
@mrshinyshoes mrshinyshoes, i kind of have to disagree with you on your comments. i do think that karen's vocals were stupendous on "top of the world" (you got both her low range and her high range on that one). but i don't really think "please mr. postman" and certainly not "there's a kind of hush" were among her greatest performances. to me, her greatest performances were the ballads: "rainy days and mondays," "yesterday once more," "superstar" (though not one of my favorite songs) (cont)
@No1KCfan6 (cont.) eventide (a gorgeous performance, lots and lots of delicious rich deepness in her voice), "only yesterday," "solitaire," and more. and many of the christmas songs.
@No1KCfan6 I think "Please Mr. Postman" and "There's a Kind of Hush" were among her best performances, and also "Little Altar Boy" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". My favs. But to each his own. ;)
@No1KCfan6 Um, nope. Among her best performances in my opinion. But again, "best" is always in the eyes of the beholder. To each his own as they say. :)
I always believed Karen and John Davidson had a great chemistry. They really looked like they were in love but I know it was platonic, at least that's what everyone said. I love every song on the Lovelines album. It is my favorite Carpenters album. You did extremely well on the video Judy. Keep up the good work.
This is a great song and would have fit perfectly on Karen's solo album... I'm constantly amazed at how little video of her is actually available. She should have been filmed EVERY time she sang. Good job on the video!
merci pour tout ce travail ...CARPENTER...it's SUPER ...

@mrshinyshoes mrshinyshoes, is it possible you're getting "favorite performance" mixed up with "favorite song"?

Nice choice of video clips! It's clever how you matched up where Karen supposedly first sees that guy, on the plane, with the lyrics.
