Further to my last comment, Lee recorded this tune in a studio in the key of C, so perhaps this version as recorded was even slower than we hear it and was in Db. Wonderful music whatever the key!

I think this playing slightly slower than recorded as the key here is D natural. It was probably played in Eb. Lovely rendition by the always lovely Lee.
@Rena1934 I think you're right. The nearest thing I can find is a short clip on YouTube from the 1963 film 'Something About Lee Wiley', with Piper Laurie as Lee (she certainly looks the part). Apparently the soundtrack to this film is made up of Lee Wiley songs, and I would like to watch the whole film some time.
Great song, Great sound, and a Great singer - Eddie Condon's small jazz group along with Lee Wiley ,one of America's premier female vocalists of this musical era, make for a terrific combination that's hard to match. It doesn't get any better than this! Many thanks for posting this video.I loved every minute of it! DMM
Lee Wiley performed this on BBC radio in 1938 with Eddie Condon and Alistair Cooke as MC, reporting from 'America'. However, the recording I have is very brief. This is the real thing. Thanks! Doesn't get any better.
An evening with Lee Wiley: what could possibly be more romantic. It is a shame that we cannot, for the most part, see her live performances. She was one of the great entertainers of the 20th century.
I love Lee Wiley. The only version I have of "Sugar" from her, is a BBC radio transcription from 1937, with Alistair Cooke as the announcer, and Tommy Dorsey and Eddie Condon performing. But it's only a segment, and this is exciting to hear! Thanks!
Hear the clarinet of Ernie Caceres! Wonderful!

@Vargon7 I have seen it and it's not very good and I don't know who dubbed Piper Laurie but she doesn't sound like Lee at all.

@Rena1934 Oh well, so much for that! Looks like a time machine is the only way anyone will get to see LW perform live............

Lee recorded Sugar with Muggsy Spanier and Jess Stacy on 7-10-40 for Commodore. That recording is classic.

Love it!! Such a beautiful voice. Wow. Youngsters, please take note of talent; i.e., singing it through without TAKE AFTER TAKE!!
