  • I need some help.

  • I love that chessie thrown in there. Good ol SP days. Man, they are not coming back.... Fabulous video.

  • This was uploaded in 2008 - and is still among my favorite shots on youtube - so awesome

  • I'm a trucker, and I love to be on the docks at the potato sheds in Edison when the trains thunder off the hill enroute to Bakersfield. Great video!

  • Thank you very much!!!!!!!

  • Question how many cars and how many cars until cut-in with the 6 helper units??

    please sub back!!!!

  • @alexvanloon111081

The oil can train usually ran with 78 tanker cars with the helper locomotives cut in behind 52nd car.

  • crap! also note that chessie unit

  • WOW B&O Chessie unit, NICE CATCH

  • Grossartig, eine Chessie Lok im Southern Pacific Zug, wunderbar zum nachstellen auf meiner Anlage

  • Great Job

  • must be a long ass train

  • Love the Chessie GP40-2 in the consist. That was a rare sight going into the mid '90's. Esp. for western railfans.

  • Southern Pacific uggh. They never cleaned their engines they killed Pacific Electric and had too many derails on Cajon Pass. Why people like them over UP?

  • @bradhig Because UP sucks!!! lol!

  • great vid how may cars

  • chin-GAWA! there's a chessie unit in that consist!

  • Great Shot of the Units working their asses off, thanks!!

  • SP's freight drags were always so much fun to watch.

  • Love the CHESSIE GP40-2! This train is the best! A Chessie Engine AND a bunch of SD40/45 Tunnel motors all on Run 8! Can't beeat that! Blows away ANY Damn locomotives out on the rails for the past 10 yrs! Raw Loud and Smokey power is #1! Fuck the new emission comfort EPA Green friendly I am a boring locomotive! they are for pussy enginners!

  • @CentralCalRailfan by this time, the purchase of the SP railroad by DRG Industries was 5 yrs old, so the DRGW units were becoming more and more scarce.

  • SP had less than 90 SD40s rebuilt at Sacramento into 7300 series numbers in the 80s. Tunnel motors were not only 40s but also 45s which were specially built to operate in the many tunnels on the mountain grades on the western part of the railroad but were used all over the system.

  • A railroad in it's death throws..........

  • why didn't the SP have a lot of SD40s? i noticed there aren't many in the various videos on YouTube, did they prefer the tunnel motors? thanks

  • Comment removed

  • @cbehr91 i mean SD40s like CSX has, not the tunnel motors. I wish I could see some tunnel motors, no matter what scheme. all i see is freaking GEVOs

  • Part 1 - Only the Southern Pacific, Cotton Belt (and SP subsidiary), and the Rio Grande purchased tunnel motors, and they really were the only ones that needed them. Tunnel motors are exactly the same as a normal locomotive, with the exception of a factory-modified cooling system (larger air intakes and grills), which allowed the locomotive to operate better in numerous tunnels across the SP system.

  • Part 2 - Many SD40T-2s and depowered SD45T-2s are still in operation. Outside the UP, they're operated by leasing companies and numerous shortlines. If there are any not currently stored by UP, it's doubtful if they're used on mainline trains. They've been relegated to yard duty like many other SD40-2s.

  • there is over 17,000 horsepower on it's knees - awesome video

  • now THATS power right there. EMD 645's running in full throttle

  • love it. nice grade

  • That's unusual. With the Chessie in their out west.

  • the B&O had a power pool with the SP that lasted well into CSX days.

  • Nice video! I miss the SP trains they had the most coolest lash ups and power units to moves those big trains. Thats the railroad i miss.

  • Very cool, thanks for posting! This is the SP I love and miss! BTW, any idea of the lead unit #? I can tell it's an 82xx-series unit (exhaust silencer), but it's too dirty to read the cab or number boards! Curious because it still has the full light package, like the SD40R 7373 trailing it.

  • Glad you enjoyed it. I went and looked at my original footage, and best as I can tell it's #8274.

  • Thanks!

  • @wastedapathy22 wow you must know alot about trains... 82xx series sd40r 7373? wow lol...

  • ahh the good old day when yu see 2-3+ different roads in a consist.

  • I like the video, still miss SOUTHERN PACIFIC...

  • You ain't the only one, and I definatley miss that train! Oil Cans always put on a show!

  • Now THATS a Stray Kitten.

  • Nice to see the trains of the not far past.

  • Ah the famous 4x6 engine lashup

  • Thanks. That was a Rio Grande unit. They threw a little of everything into this one.

  • @dkat1043 DRGW 5329, a later order RIO GRANDE SD45 (still unrebuilt in 1993 mind you) with the big lettering on the hood - AWESOME CATCH!
