You're just as well off making your sprites in mspaint. There's no software tricks involved, just drawing and pixelling skils.

I would recommend Graphics Gale if only because it has simplicity with better palette tools and layers.

There's few reasons to use MS Paint over it.

I wonder if its possible to create a model in 3D using vector graphics and cell shading, and then record the asigned actions (walking, jumping, etc) of that model, then put a filter on that recording that makes it looked pixilated...

That would save a lot of time animating each frame of a sprite's many actions.

Because the DS cannot handle the more complex 3D graphics. Plus, you'd still want to make it a side-scroller. A 3D cell shaded model flattened and passed through a pixilation filter might produce the same effect as the traditional sprite making process but cut the production time down incredibly.

Granted, the pixilated model would probably need a little bit of touch up work, but still...

Actually I remembered that DKC used that method I described and I was going to post that as proof that it was possible, but I couldn't find the video until you replied to my comment. Thanks. And yes, that is the type of method I thought of, but with some key differences. The model would have to be cel-shaded to cut down on the 3-D look of it and to give the sprite a stronger blackline. Then after pixilation the sprites would probably have to be tweaked a little bit.
