However, this lens provided a very skewed view that is not nearly fully representative of Chasidic culture, although she seems to want to give a comprehensive look. Add to this that the film is not self-reflexive at all; we never even once see the director.
I recommend checking out anthropologist Barbara Myerhoff's "Number Our Days." A much better look at Chasidism.

Really interesting documentary, thanks for uploading. The Hasidic community is really interesting and i admire their strong community spirit. The UK in general could learn from them in some ways.

This documentary is terrible. The director, Vanessa Engle, tried to use Samuel as a lens through which to view the community. However, this lens provided a very skewed view that is not nearly fully representative of Chasidic culture, although she seems to want to give a comprehensive look. Add to this that the film is not self-reflexive at all; we never even once see the director.
I recommend checking out anthropologist Barbara Myerhoff's "Number Our Days." A much better look at Chasidism.

I lived in Stamford Hill and I can tell that the vast majority of orthodox jewish men refuse to work and demand benefits or shout racism & discrimination.....Women collect large amounts of child benefit and Housing Benefit.....the DWP does not, as a rule, investigate this community for fraud or not accepting work because of fears of anti-semitism.....
