why does her music remind me of islam and the middle east? i just think of the desert whenever i listen to it like arabian nights and the bellydancers!
Loreena brings forth the music from ancient times and it's beauty to the present. From a time when there were great civilizations that lived differently and in tune with Creation. If we are thrust backward and we have no more modern convienences we will still have music. She was given the gift of storing it for us from ancient memories.
@Amazonwarrior777 i know what u mean i've 22 years without knowing who she was and a friend gave me her cd the book of secrets when i was going through the worst time ever, her music healed me!!! i've been a huge fan for a year now!! wish i could meet her someday to thank her for her music, she's amazing!!
Thanks for the background info. It's nice knowing what inspires Loreena to produce such beautiful music. I believe Anna was in love with Bohemond of Taranto, the Prince of Antioch, from the time she was 14.
There is something so primal, so elemental to her music, that your soul instinctively knows its origins. The souls yearns for release into the purity of her music, to soar among the notes, to touch the very heart of it, and never return to the mortal world!
There's nobody on the planet like Loreena McKennitt...I've been a fan since around 1997 or so. She continues to amaze me more and more. Unfortunately, this piece is, to date, only found on the Ancient muse CD. Too bad she didn't perform this one on the Nights from the Alhambra DVD...I'd like to see this one done onstage, or at least hear a live version of it. Great piece....Loreena you are great!
'kecharitomene' actually means 'the most gracefull of them all' in ancient greek and the Mother of God is reffered this way...it is a very very special word...
I agree, it is great to see such a talented musician embrace history so dearly as McKennitt. The passion she holds for the past shows in her remarkable music.
Merci Jacques .
Loreena McKennitt bringing An Ancient Muse' to Turkey, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
n her 2006 CD, An Ancient Muse, the Canadian singer-songwriter, known for her unique style, which combines Celtic music and Eastern melodies, looks through the gates of İstanbul and makes references to important figures from this land, such as Sultan Mehmed II and Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi. The Turkish musical instruments ud and kanun were also used in the album.
kecharitomene or : " κεχαριτωμενη " means : the jolliest in greek and is a characterisation attributted to Madonna, Mary the Holy the mother of Jesus Christ.
χαιρε κεχαριτωμενη, ο Κυριος μετα σου said the angel to the Virgin.
ana comnena is quite known by those who are interested in literature.julia kristeva wrote a novel which has as the main subject the writings of this byzantine princess. the novel is "Death in Byzantium".
The U C of Canada is afar cry from the Unitarian Universalist Church. The UC of C was an amalgmation of several Methodist, Presbyterian. Congreationalist, Calvinist (and in a very few cases Babtist) churches when numbers were low in the various denominations.
The name of the convent (monastery) Kexaritomene come from the title usually attributed to Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus)as it is included in the words that archangel Michael addressed to her during the announcement of her pregnacy : (from greek in english characters) Xaire kexaritomeni, o Kirios meta Sou. A (weak)translation is : Hail, most-graceful, the Lord is with You.
i think that it refers to Empress Ειρήνη Κεχαριτομενη, she was a byzantine empress and her nickname was kecharitomene. Though that Kexaritomeni is used often on the aegean islands as one of the many nicknames given on the virgin mary
I have been a long time fan of Loreena's. Her music has taken me on many journeys to my soul. But my comment is directed more to thanking you for the history. 5 stars for the history and if I could, 5 more for the music.
I wish I could live in one of her songs!

She's a New-Ager (she refers to the divine as "this essence called God"), that's probably why she makes songs about Pagans, Christians and Muslims.
